Barriers and facilitators of alcohol abstinence during pregnancy.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is a common and under-recognised health burden in South Africa. There is a limited understanding of why pregnant women drink in the South African context, particularly in rural settings, where the prevalence of FASD is highest. A purposive sample included eight women from a rural ante-natal clinic in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Participants participated in a semi-structured interview. A process of thematic analysis was used to generate themes from the interviews. All participants were aware of the link between alcohol use during pregnancy…

Can methionine and zinc prevent the embryopathic effects of alcohol?

Alcoholism is a major and world-wide health problem. A characteristic pattern of congenital defects, known as the fetal alcohol syndrome, has been detected in the offspring of mothers who are chronic alcoholics. The mechanism underlying the teratogenic effects of ethanol is not known. An important hypothesis is that ethanol becomes teratogenic by inducing maternal/fetal nutritional deficiencies. Nutrients affected by ethanol consumption include methionine and zinc. Epidemiological and experimental studies have shown that zinc deficiency is associated with both fetal growth retardation and deve

Latest Evidence on Alcohol and Pregnancy.

Alcohol increases risk for miscarriage, birth defects and other problems, and it is the sole cause of the range of physical, developmental and cognitive problems known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), which can affect up to 5 percent of all pregnancies. Many women report drinking early in pregnancy, often before they know they're pregnant. When knowledgeable of the latest research evidence, nurses can counsel women of the risks alcohol use poses to a healthy pregnancy.

Estimation of national, regional, and global prevalence of alcohol use during pregnancy and fetal alcohol syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use during pregnancy is the direct cause of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). We aimed to estimate the prevalence of alcohol use during pregnancy and FAS in the general population and, by linking these two indicators, estimate the number of pregnant women that consumed alcohol during pregnancy per one case of FAS. METHODS: We began by doing two independent comprehensive systematic literature searches using multiple electronic databases for original quantitative studies that reported the prevalence in the general population of the respective country of alcohol use during pregna

Including a screening and brief alcohol intervention program in the care of the obstetric patient.

Alcohol is the drug most commonly abused by pregnant women and the leading cause of preventable birth defects across the United States. Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral for Treatment is a program developed by the Emergency Nurses Association that has demonstrated success in treating patients who have alcohol use disorders. This interventional program can be useful to perinatal nurses caring for pregnant women with alcohol use disorders in a variety of settings.

Alcohol and eye diseases: a review of epidemiologic studies.

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiologic evidence for the associations of alcohol consumption with eye diseases was gathered. METHOD: A literature review was conducted. RESULTS: In addition to alcohol-induced ocular anomalies among children with fetal alcohol syndrome, epidemiologic studies in the past two decades have demonstrated that chronic alcoholism is associated with a significantly increased risk of cataract, keratitis, color vision deficiencies and corneal arcus. Moderate alcohol use, however, has been reported to be possibly protective against age-related macular degeneration, cataract and diabeti

Strategies for prevention of fetal alcohol effects.

The effects of alcohol on the fetus include a wide range of problems; the complete fetal alcohol syndrome is the extreme end of the spectrum. At critical doses alcohol has the potential for multiple adverse effects on the maternal--placental--fetal system. Variability of outcome probably is related to individual differences in drinking patterns as well as in biologic susceptibility. At Boston City Hospital Prenatal Clinic, therapy was provided for pregnant women who reported drinking heavily. Reduction in maternal alcohol consumption before the third trimester was associated with improved neon

Alcoholism--the second great imitator. An introduction to the problem of alcoholism.

The problem of alcohol abuse and alcoholism pervades our society. The economic losses run into billions of dollars annually. What is more important is the number of fatalities associated with the problem and the effect of alcohol on decision-making processes within all areas of government and nongovernment. The pathologist must understand the fundamental diagnostic processes, recognize the anatomic and clinical findings, and treat alcoholism as a medical problem.
