BACKGROUND: The worldwide increase in road traffic crashes and use of firearms has increased the incidence of duodenal injuries. Upper gastrointestinal radiological studies and computed tomography (CT) in resource settings may lead to the diagnosis of blunt duodenal injury. BACKGROUND: Bullet wounds are a rare occurrence during times of peace. Recently, however, there has been a general increase in the relative number and severity of this type of trauma. In times of peace, gunshot wounds may be mainly caused by suicide attempts, negligent handling of firearms and especially violent conflicts. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic role and therapeutic effectiveness of videothoracoscopy in chest trauma. Between 1st January 1993 and 30th September 2003, 112 traumatized patients underwent a videothoracoscopy. METHODS: During a 4-hour period (3 × 15 minutes), 18 male healthy nonsmoking Whites practiced enemy neutralization and building security. At each session, 65-246 blanks and dummy hand grenades were used, and there was no respiratory protection. Each soldier underwent blood sampling and spirometry testing before and after the training session and monitored own exposure.
