The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel 1858) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is a serious parasite of livestock, humans, and other warm-blooded animals. It has been eradicated from the northern parts of its historical range down to the Panama-Colombian border where a permanent barrier zone is maintained. Skin lesions on an Atlantic bottlenosed dolphin, captured off the coast of Florida, were investigated and found to be histologically and microbiologically indistinguishable from those caused in humans by Loboa loboi. All attempts to isolate the etiologic agent or to transmit the infection to mice and monkeys ended in failure. Sight records of other suspected dolphin cases of lobomycosis in Florida waters are described along with citations of two previously confirmed and published dolphin infections.

Aberrant, proliferative sparganosis was diagnosed in a 6-yr-old male domestic long-haired cat from Gainesville, Florida. The cat spent all of its life in Florida. Postmortem examination revealed lesions and spargana in the stomach, spleen, and liver. By light and electron microscopy, unusual mononuclear cells, interpreted as host-derived monocytes, were evident in the stroma of the spargana. Retrovirus-like particles were present in the cytoplasm of some of these cells.

Morphological variation was studied in the adult cladorchiid trematodes Chiorchis spp. (Trematoda: Digenea), that parasitize the intestinal tract and caecum of the American manatee (Trichechus manatus). We reviewed invasive Nocardia infections in 3 noncontiguous geographic areas in the United States during 2011–2018. Among 268 patients with invasive nocardiosis, 48.2% were from Minnesota, 32.4% from Arizona, and 19.4% from Florida. Predominant species were N. nova complex in Minnesota (33.4%), N. cyriacigeorgica in Arizona (41.4%), and N. brasiliensis in Florida (17.3%). Nutrient levels in the nearshore waters of the Florida Keys have increased over the past few decades concomitant with a decline in the health of Florida's reef system. Phosphorus is a particular concern in the Florida Keys as it may be the limiting nutrient in nearshore waters. The nursing shortage in the USA is expected to reach 260,000 registered nurses (RNs) by 2025.
