Ciliary sulcus fixation of a dislocated posterior chamber intraocular lens using liquid perfluorophenanthrene.

A posterior chamber intraocular lens was transsclerally sutured to the ciliary sulcus with the aid of liquid perfluorophenanthrene (Vitreon). This vitreous substitute facilitates the procedure and reduces the possibility of damage to the retina.

The use of a perfluorochemical emulsion as a vascular perfusate in drug absorption.

In-vitro simultaneous luminal and vascular perfusion using the perfluorochemical emulsion, FC-43 emulsion, as a vascular perfusate, was examined for drug absorption in rat jejunum. The intestinal membrane in this system was found to retain its normal barrier functions for drug transport, as evident from the following: (i) stable absorption clearance of tritiated water and salicylic acid at steady-state, (ii) agreement of this clearance with that by in-situ single-pass luminal perfusion, (iii) active transport of D-glucose and its inhibition by phloridzin and (iv) normal glutamate pyruvate tran

Transcriptomics and Mendelian randomization studies reveal the critical role of Stanniocalcin-2 in linking perfluorinated compound-exposure to colorectal cancer.

Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) represents a major gastrointestinal malignancy with substantial global incidence, marked by elevated morbidity and mortality rates. Despite advancements in treatment, there is still considerable variation in prognosis, particularly with high recurrence rates, emphasizing the need for more precise prognostic tools. The present study is aimed at identifying central prognostic biomarkers linked to perfluorinated compound (PFCs) exposure and construct a prognostic risk model for CRC based on transcriptomic data. We analyzed transcriptome data from 638 CRC samples and 51

In Situ Surfactant-Assisted Assembly for Efficient Removal of PFAS by Low-Pressure Ultrafiltration Membrane Process.

The widespread use of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has raised serious environmental and public health concerns, driving the urgent need for effective and scalable removal technologies. In this study, we present a surfactant-assisted ultrafiltration (UF) strategy for enhanced PFAS separation through leveraging in situ assembly of PFAS molecules with the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The addition of CTAB (0.14 mM) induces the formation of nanoscale complexes or micelles with PFAS, thus promoting their effective retention by UF membranes (99.1%

NMR-Based toxicometabolomics of Yellowtail Snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus) embryos, as a relevant ecological receptor, exposed to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS).

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a widespread and persistent environmental contaminant associated with adverse health effects. While previous studies have explored PFOS toxicity in various model systems, little is known with respect to ecologically relevant vertebrates. The present study utilized high-resolution magic-angle spinning (HRMAS) NMR spectroscopy for metabolomic profiling of embryonic stages of Yellowtail Snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus), as an ecologically relevant marine fish species, exposed to PFOS. Significant changes metabolite levels in embryos exposed to sublethal concentratio

Urine-to-Blood Partitioning of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Human Biomonitoring: Implications for Environmental Exposure Analysis and Bioaccumulation Assessment.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent chemicals with substantial bioaccumulation potential, but their distribution between blood and urine in humans remains poorly characterized. In this review, we assessed the urine-to-blood concentration ratio (UtBCR) as a potential indicator of PFAS bioaccumulation by integrating evidence from human biomonitoring studies and protein-binding data. We summarized PFAS concentrations in human serum and urine across general and highly exposed populations and identified clear compound-specific differences in blood-urine partitioning. We furthe

Perfluorooctanoic acid exposure disrupts gut microbiota and aggravates experimental colitis.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a prevalent and environmentally persistent compound in the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) family, is ubiquitously detected in the food chain and has been epidemiologically linked to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the actions and mechanisms by which PFOA exposure influences colonic inflammation under colitis conditions remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated the impact of dietary PFOA exposure on colitis severity using a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model. Our results suggest that dietary PFOA exposure

Association between plasma levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and schizophrenia: A case-control study.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of neurotoxic persistent organic pollutants that may increase the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, yet their association with schizophrenia (SCZ) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between plasma PFAS levels and the risk of schizophrenia. The concentrations of PFAS in plasma were measured using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS). To evaluate the single and combined effects of PFAS exposure on the risk of schizophrenia, we employed multivariable logistic regres

Towards optimizing short-chained PFCA esterification in water.

Short-chained perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) are persistent, mobile aqueous contaminants which are challenging to treat. Improved treatment technologies are necessary to reduce rising short-chain PFCA emissions from high-concentration industrial point sources. We recently demonstrated that perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a long-chain PFCA, undergoes chemical transformation to an insoluble ester through a reaction with decanol within spontaneously formed emulsions, (self)driving phase separation and removal from the aqueous phase. Building on this preliminary finding, here we expand the ester

Serum perfluoroalkyl substances and infant measles antibody concentrations before and after vaccination: Results from Burkina Faso.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been linked to immunotoxic effects in children, and the consequences of immune suppression could be particularly severe for children in low-income settings. We thus aimed to investigate associations between infant and maternal PFAS exposure and infant vaccine antibody concentrations in Burkina Faso. Infants (n = 200) were vaccinated against measles at baseline (age 4-7 months) and/or at 9 months. Associations between maternal and infant PFAS concentrations (quantified in serum collected at baseline) and infant measles antibody concentrations before and aft

Predicting Hormesis Effects of GenX in Zebrafish via Interpretable Machine Learning: Insights From SHAP Analysis.

Hexafluoropropylene oxide-dimer acid (GenX), a prominent alternative to legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), poses a significant challenge to traditional linear risk assessment models due to its ability to induce hormesis-a biphasic "low-dose stimulation, high-dose inhibition" response. This study established an interpretable machine learning (ML) framework to identify and predict GenX-induced non-monotonic dose-response (NMDR) relationships in zebrafish (Danio rerio). By integrating 263 independent experimental records across 11 biological categories, we benchmarked 6 mL paradig
