Low vitamin B12 levels among newly-arrived refugees from Bhutan, Iran and Afghanistan: a multicentre Australian study.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 deficiency is prevalent in many countries of origin of refugees. Using a threshold of 5% above which a prevalence of low Vitamin B12 is indicative of a population health problem, we hypothesised that Vitamin B12 deficiency exceeds this threshold among newly-arrived refugees resettling in Australia, and is higher among women due to their increased risk of food insecurity. This paper reports Vitamin B12 levels in a large cohort of newly arrived refugees in five Australian states and territories. METHODS: In a cross-sectional descriptive study, we collected Vitamin B12, f…

Converting Food Waste into Value-Added Products: A Review on Current Technologies, Challenges, and Future Perspectives.

Food waste has emerged as one of the most pressing global sustainability challenges because of its environmental, economic, and social implications. Nearly one-third of the food produced worldwide is lost or wasted each year, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, depletion of natural resources, and increasing food insecurity. Advances in circular bioeconomy concepts and sustainable processing technologies have transformed food waste from an environmental liability into a valuable feedstock for producing biofuels, bioplastics, bioactive compounds, functional ingredients, prebiotics, and oth…

Interlinkages between Climate Change and Food Systems: The Impact on Child Malnutrition-Narrative Review.

The pandemics of obesity, undernutrition, and climate change represent severe threats to child health. They co-occur; interact with each other to produce sequelae at biological, psychological, or social levels; and share common underlying drivers. In this paper, we review the key issues concerning child diet and nutritional status, focusing on the interactions with climate and food systems. Inadequate infant and young child feeding practices, food insecurity, poverty, and limited access to health services are the leading causes of malnutrition across generations. Food system industrialization …

The Role of the Pediatrician to Promote Effective Approaches for Child and Adolescent Nutrition in Schools: Policy Statement.

Substantial gains have been made in school nutrition over the last 2 decades. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the impact of food insecurity on child and adolescent nutrition, underscoring the value of school meal programs. Federal, state, and local regulations have improved the nutritional quality of school meal programs, including updated school meal guidelines from the US Department of Agriculture. Advocacy for universal school nutrition is needed to promote policies that prioritize continuous access to meals and snacks of high nutritional value and variety, experiential (hands on, practic…

Health-Related Social Needs Among Emergency Department Patients with HIV.

Little research has examined the health-related social needs of emergency department (ED) patients who have HIV. We surveyed a random sample of public hospital ED patients and compared the social needs of patients with and without HIV. Social needs were high among all ED patients, but patients with HIV reported significantly higher levels of food insecurity (65.0% vs. 50.3%, p = 0.01) and homelessness or living doubled up (33.8% vs. 21.0%, p < 0.01) than other patients. Our findings suggest the importance of assessing social needs in ED-based interventions for patients with HIV.

Nutrition-Related and Self-Rated Health Outcomes Among Lottery-Assigned Residents and Individuals Waitlisted for Subsidized Rental Units in Chinatown, Boston, MA.

Background: Housing is a social determinant of health. In 2015, a lottery assigned low-income families from a waitlist to a new subsidized building (NSB) in Chinatown, Boston, MA. In 2019-2020, we explored associations between housing status (NSB or being on waitlist) and self-rated physical and mental health; household food insecurity (FI); weekly consumption of fruits/vegetables (FV), weekly consumption of soda, and monthly consumption of fast food. Methods: Surveys were sent to NSB (n = 95) and waitlist (n = 2498) households. Logistic and linear regressions explored associations between hou…

Evaluation of the Feasibility and Construct Validity of a Novel Method to Measure Household Fruit and Vegetable Procurement in Low-Income Community Settings.

BACKGROUND: Many interventions focus on improving fruit and vegetable (F/V) procurement for those experiencing low incomes or food insecurity. To address current F/V procurement measurement limitations, a novel F/V procurement tool was developed. OBJECTIVE: The main objectives are to describe the tool and evaluate the tool's feasibility and construct validity. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study used baseline data from the ongoing Mobile Food Market Cluster Randomized Trial, conducted in the Twin Cities metropolitan area of Minnesota. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: During 2023, participants (mean age…

The association of increased SNAP benefits during COVID-19 with food insufficiency and anxiety among US adults: a quasi-experimental study.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent policy response to mitigate disease spread had far-reaching impacts on health and social well-being. In response, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) underwent several pandemic-era modifications, including a 15 % monthly benefit increase on January 1, 2021. Research documenting the health effects of these SNAP modifications among low-income households and minoritized groups who were most impacted by the economic fallout during the first years of the pandemic is lacking. We aimed to estimate the health effects of the 15 % SNAP be

Management of severe acute malnutrition in low-income and middle-income countries.

Kwashiorkor and marasmus, collectively termed severe acute malnutrition (SAM), account for at least 10% of all deaths among children under 5 years of age worldwide, virtually all of them in low-income and middle-income countries. A number of risk factors, including seasonal food insecurity, environmental enteropathy, poor complementary feeding practices, and chronic and acute infections, contribute to the development of SAM. Careful anthropometry is key to making an accurate diagnosis of SAM and can be performed by village health workers or even laypeople in rural areas. The majority of childr…

Multiple material need insecurities and severity of psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic among women who use drugs.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the salience of material needs and financial precarity on mental health and distress. Women who use drugs (WWUD) experienced significant mental distress and multiple material need insecurities before the pandemic. However, research is limited on the nature of these insecurities during the pandemic despite both material scarcity and mental distress placing WWUD at greater risk of drug-related harms such as overdose. We aim to characterize material need insecurities and their associations with level of mental distress among a sample of WWUD in the Un

Epidemiology, risk factors, social determinants of health, and current management for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in sub-Saharan Africa.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the leading cause of chronic liver disease globally and is estimated to affect approximately 25% of the world's population. Data about the prevalence and incidence of NAFLD in Africa are scarce, but the prevalence is estimated to be 13·5% for the general population. This is likely to be an underestimate considering the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases, particularly the rising prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes, driven by the overlapping challenges of food insecurity, nutritional transition, and associated increased consumption o…
