Vocal tremor and vibrato in the same person: acoustic and electromyographic differences.

The goal of this case study was to measure and describe differences between vocal vibrato and essential tremor of the voice in one individual who exhibited both types of modulation. Recordings of spoken and sung vowels produced by the same individual at three effort levels were examined via analysis of acoustic and laryngeal electromyographic (LEMG) signals. Modulation rate, periodicity, and spectral measures of both audio and muscle activation signals revealed generally slower, more prominent, and more regular patterns in sung than in spoken conditions. There was not always a clear correspond

The development of microthermal analysis and photothermal microspectroscopy as novel approaches to drug-excipient compatibility studies.

The use of microthermal analysis as a novel means of assessing chemical incompatibility between drugs and excipients is assessed using magnesium stearate and acetylsalicylic acid as a model system. Localised thermomechanical analysis (L-TMA), localised differential thermal analysis (L-DTA), nanosampling, thermally assisted particle manipulation (TAPM) and photothermal microspectrometry (PTMS) are developed as a means of allowing extremely small quantities of drug and excipient to be heated in close proximity to each other. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), hot stage microscopy (HSM) and

Selective loss of high-frequency oscillations in phrenic and hypoglossal activity in the decerebrate rat during gasping.

2-Methoxyestradiol (2ME), a promising anti-tumor agent, is currently tested in phase I/II clinical trial to assess drug tolerance and clinical effects. 2ME is known to affect microtubule (MT) polymerization rather than act through estrogen receptors. We hypothesized that 2ME, similar to other MT inhibitors, disrupts endothelial barrier properties. We show that 2ME decreases transendothelial electrical resistance and increases FITC-dextran leakage across human pulmonary artery endothelial monolayer, which correlates with 2ME-induced MT depolymerization. Pretreatment of endothelium with MT stabi

Classification of aorta insufficiency and stenosis using neuro-fuzzy system.

Cardiac Doppler signals recorded from aorta valve of 60 patients were transferred to a personal computer by using a 16 bit sound card. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) method was applied to the recorded signal from each patient. Since FFT method inherently cannot offer a good spectral resolution at jet blood flows such as cardiac Doppler signals, it sometimes causes wrong interpretation. In order to do a good interpretation and rapid diagnosis, cardiac Doppler blood flow signals were statistically arranged and then classified using neuro-fuzzy system. The NEFCLASS model, which is used to creat

Abnormal corticomuscular coherence is associated with the small amplitude cortical myoclonus in Parkinson's disease.

Coherence is the degree of time-locked correlation between two signals as a function of frequency. The purpose of this study was to test the following hypotheses: (1) corticomuscular coherence is abnormally increased in those Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with small amplitude cortical myoclonus, and (2) corticomuscular coherence peaks around the time of the myoclonus electromyographic (EMG) discharge. We studied Parkinson's disease patients with and without myoclonus and controls. The data were digitally collected and processed off-line with EMG rectification, creation of 511-msec epochs,

EMG frequency content changes with increasing force and during fatigue in the quadriceps femoris muscle of men and women.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of gender on changes in electromyographic (EMG) signal characteristics of the quadriceps muscles with increasing force and with fatigue. A total of fourteen healthy adults (seven men, seven women) participated in the study. Subjects had to perform isometric ramp contractions in knee extension with the force gradually increasing from 0 to 100% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) in a 6-s period. Subjects then performed a fatigue task, consisting of a sustained maximum isometric knee extension contraction held until force decreased bel

Mechanical output impedance of the lung determined from cardiogenic oscillations.

The beating heart naturally oscillates the lung because of the close juxtaposition between these organs producing cardiogenic oscillations in flow that can be measured at the mouth when the glottis is open. Correspondingly, if the mouth is occluded, the same phenomenon produces cardiogenic pressure oscillations that can be measured just distal to the site of occlusion. The Fourier-domain ratio of these oscillations in pressure and flow constitutes what we call cardiogenic respiratory impedance (Zc). We calculated Zc between about 1.5 and 10 Hz in relaxed normal subjects at functional residual

Putative measure of peripheral and brainstem frequency-following in humans.

The human brainstem frequency-following response (FFR) registers phase-locked neural activity to periodic auditory stimuli. FFR waveforms were extracted from the electroencephalogram by averaging responses to repeated auditory stimulation. Two channels of data were simultaneously recorded from horizontally (electrodes placed in ear canals) and vertically (vertex scalp referenced to midline) oriented electrode configurations. Eight participants each received a total of 2000 tone repetitions for each of ten stimulus frequencies ranging from 133 to 950 Hz. FFRs were quantified by fast-Fourier spe

Stereotyped behavior in developmentally delayed or autistic populations. Rhythmic or nonrhythmic?

Stereotypies are high-frequency, highly repetitive, nonfunctional behaviors that are also often characterized as rhythmic. Rhythmicity suggests that the behavior is periodic, occurring at fixed intervals. Few studies, however, have rigorously demonstrated periodicity in stereotypy. This study examined various topographies of stereotypy in 9 participants and used spectral methods to detect existence of periodicties. Two general patterns emerged in the spectral analysis. Participants who engaged in stereotypic rocking showed peaks in their power spectra; participants who engaged in other topogra

Scaling behaviour of heartbeat intervals obtained by wavelet-based time-series analysis.

Biological time-series analysis is used to identify hidden dynamical patterns which could yield important insights into underlying physiological mechanisms. Such analysis is complicated by the fact that biological signals are typically both highly irregular and non-stationary, that is, their statistical character changes slowly or intermittently as a result of variations in background influences. Previous statistical analyses of heartbeat dynamics have identified long-range correlations and power-law scaling in the normal heartbeat, but not the phase interactions between the different frequenc

Electroretinographic alterations in the Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl phenotype.

Maximal 0.5-Hz and cone 30-Hz ERG responses were recorded from 19 patients showing a Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl (LMDD) phenotype. Off-line averaging of 80 to 100 iterations was routinely performed. When needed, our previously described low-noise techniques and off-line fast Fourier transform procedures were used. The maximal ERG response was non-detectable in 52.6% of cases. About half of the recordable signals were below 5% of the lower normal amplitudes. Cone 30-Hz ERGs were measurable in 64.7% of cases. Of these, 63% of tracings were below 5% of the lower normal range. In most cases no dyst

Patterns of blood pressure variability in normotensive and hypertensive rats.

We sought patterns in mean arterial pressure of normotensive rats and alterations in chronic hypertension. Pressure was recorded for 4-6 days by telemetry from conscious, unrestrained rats and sampled digitally at 3 Hz, using normotensive Sprague-Dawley rats, spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), and Sprague-Dawley rats with two-kidney, one-clip renovascular hypertension (2K,1C). Time series analysis was by fast Fourier transform. Power spectra were divided into ultradian (frequencies > 1/day), circadian (frequency = 1/day), and infradian (frequencies < 1/day) domains. FT-IR and near-infrared FT-Raman study of aggregation of bacteriochlorophyll c in solutions: evidence for involvement of the ester group in the aggregation.

Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), and near-infrared (NIR)-excited FT-Raman spectra have been measured for bacteriochlorophyll c (BChl-c) in acetone, tetrahydrofuran (THF), pyridine-d5, carbon disulfide (CS2), and water-saturated carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) to investigate its aggregation in vitro. The UV-Vis absorption spectra can be classified into two groups. Group I (acetone, THF, and pyridine-d5 solutions) gives a spectrum with a Qy band around 665 nm while group II (CS2 and water-saturated CCl4 solutions) shows a spectrum typical of BChl-c aggrega

Spectral frequency analysis of dynamic balance in healthy and injured athletes.

Different neurophysiological circuits underlie the various frequencies of the body sway for the regulation of human upright posture. Servo-controlled platforms allowed experimental studies about latency responses after a sudden external disturbance but power frequency repartition during spontaneous dynamic equilibrium has rarely been examined. The purpose of the present study was to examine the zone of sway frequency assigned to proprioceptive afferences from muscular, articular and tendinous receptors in healthy and injured subjects standing on an unstable and minimal area. Characteristics of frequency content of atrial signal-averaged electrocardiograms during sinus rhythm in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

To clarify the characteristics of the frequency content of atrial signal-averaged electrocardiograms (ECGs) during sinus rhythm in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, P wave-triggered signal-averaged ECGs were recorded in 28 patients with and 34 control patients without paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Fast Fourier transform analysis was performed on the 100-ms segment starting 75 ms before the end of the P wave. An area ratio (AR50) was calculated by dividing the area under the spectrum curve between 20 and 50 Hz, multiplied by 100, by the area between 0 and 20 Hz. Magnitude ratios (
