Neuronal loss in familial frontotemporal dementia with ubiquitin-positive, tau-negative inclusions.

The neuronal density in the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes was determined in nine cases of familial frontotemporal dementia with ubiq … system (CAST-Grid, Olympus, Denmark). There was a significant reduction in neuronal density in the frontal lobe (22.3 +/- 3.8 x 10(3)/mm(3)) of familial FTDU in comparison to aged controls (33.1 +/- 1.7 x 10(3) per mm(3), P < 0.05). An estimate of the relative numbers of neurons was calculated by multiplying the numerical density by the cortical thickness, wh …

Brain tissue pressure gradients created by expanding frontal epidural mass lesion.

A porcine model was used to study the regional intracranial pressure (ICP) differences caused by a frontal mass lesion. Intraparenchymal ICP monitors were placed in the right and left frontal lobes, right and left temporal lobes, midbrain, and cerebellum. A frontal epidural mass lesion was created by placing a balloon catheter through a burr hole into the right frontal epidural space. A computer was used to acquire data from all monitors at 50-msec intervals. The balloon was expanded by 1 cc over a period of 1 second every 5 minutes and maximum pressure immediately before and during expansion …

[Frontal sinus osteoma associated with intracranial porencephalic cavity].

A case of an eighteen-year-old student, complaining of frontal and periorbital headache is presented. Using conventional radiographies and CT Scan a frontal sinus osteoma is diagnosed, finding a hypodense image located in the left frontal cerebral lobe, without perilesional oedema or contrast uptake. During the surgical act, a destruction of the posterior wall of the left frontal sinus is found, penetrating the anterior cerebral fossa and connecting with the cerebral cavity in the left frontal cerebral lobe through a fistula of mucosal tissue that passes through the dura mater. Complete tumora

Adverse and compensatory neurophysiological slowing in Parkinson's disease.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit multifaceted changes in neurophysiological brain activity, hypothesized to represent a global cortical slowing effect. Using task-free magnetoencephalography and extensive clinical assessments, we found that neurophysiological slowing in PD is differentially associated with motor and non-motor symptoms along a sagittal gradient over the cortical anatomy. In superior parietal regions, neurophysiological slowing reflects an adverse effect and scales with cognitive and motor impairments, while across the inferior frontal cortex, neurophysiological sl

Frontal and temporal coding dynamics in successive steps of complex behavior.

Ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), and temporal cortex (TE) all contribute to visual decision-making. Accumulating evidence suggests that vlPFC may play a central role in multiple cognitive operations, perhaps resembling domain-general regions of the human frontal lobe. We trained monkeys in a task calling for learning, retrieval, and spatial selection of rewarded target objects. Recordings of neural activity covered large areas of vlPFC, dlPFC, and TE. Results suggested a central role for vlPFC in each cognitive operation with strong coding of eac…

Motor Control: Parietal Stimulation Prevents Voluntary Hand Movement.

Inhibition of action is commonly attributed to frontal cortex. A new study shows that intra-surgical stimulation of human posterior parietal cortex selectively prevents the initiation and execution of voluntary movement of the contralateral hand.

Physiology of free will.

Free will is a perception that people have that they choose to make their movements. This perception includes a sense of willing the movement and self-agency that they are responsible for the movement. If there is a "free will force" that plays a role in movement selection, it should precede movement. There is no evidence for a driving force, and the perception of willing is not fully processed until after the movement. The perceptions of free will likely arise from an interaction between frontal and parietal areas. Free will might be considered to exist if a person's brain is functioning norm

Biochemical and molecular characterization of neurofibrillary degeneration in frontotemporal dementias.

Neurofibrillary degeneration (NFD) is a degenerating process characterized by the intraneuronal aggregation of abnormal tau proteins. These proteins have a biochemical signature which is disease-specific. They also have a neocortical distribution which is typical of the disease. Pathological tau proteins have been analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively in all diseases that may present the clinical symptoms of frontotemporal dementias. In Alzheimer's disease, a disease with sometimes a frontal predominance, paired helical filaments (PHF) of neurofibrillary tangles are made of hyperphosphoryl

Glutathione peroxidase activity in surgical and autopsied human brains.

Glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) activity was assayed in normal cerebral gray and white matter samples obtained from frontal, temporal, occipital and parietal lobes during surgical approach to an underlying lesion, and also in normal autopsied human frontal gray and white matter. GSHPx was assayed by a 2 step enzyme reaction which was monitored by following the oxidation of NADPH at 340 nm. It was found that all the brain samples studied contained GSHPx activity. Parietal lobe appeared to have the lowest GSHPx activity compared to temporal, occipital or frontal lobes. Mean enzyme activity in aut…

Perisaccadic and attentional remapping of receptive fields in lateral intraparietal area and frontal eye fields.

The nature and function of perisaccadic receptive field (RF) remapping have been controversial. We use a delayed saccade task to reduce previous confounds and examine the remapping time course in the lateral intraparietal area and frontal eye fields. In the delay period, the RF shift direction turns from the initial fixation to the saccade target. In the perisaccadic period, RFs first shift toward the target (convergent remapping), but around the time of saccade onset/offset, the shifts become predominantly toward the post-saccadic RF locations (forward remapping). Thus, unlike forward remappi

Saccades and presaccadic stimulus repetition alter cortical network topology and dynamics: evidence from EEG and graph theoretical analysis.

Parietal and frontal cortex are involved in saccade generation, and their output signals modify visual signals throughout cortex. Local signals associated with these interactions are well described, but their large-scale progression and network dynamics are unknown. Here, we combined source localized electroencephalography (EEG) and graph theory analysis (GTA) to understand how saccades and presaccadic visual stimuli interactively alter cortical network dynamics in humans. Twenty-one participants viewed 1-3 vertical/horizontal grids, followed by grid with the opposite orientation just before a

A Canonical Scheme of Bottom-Up and Top-Down Information Flows in the Frontoparietal Network.

Goal-directed behavior often involves temporal separation and flexible context-dependent association between sensory input and motor output. The control of goal-directed behavior is proposed to lie in the frontoparietal network, but the computational architecture of this network remains elusive. Based on recent rodent studies that measured and manipulated projection neurons in the frontoparietal network together with findings from earlier primate studies, we propose a canonical scheme of information flows in this network. The parietofrontal pathway transmits the spatial information of a sensor
