[First experience in endonasal surgery using a new 3D-Chipendoscope].

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic surgery for treatment of nasal, paranasal and anterior skull base pathologies is an established treatment modality. Available rigid endoscopes with angled views provide a 2-dimensional view with restriction of depth perception. In this study we report about our first experience with a new 3D-Chipendoscope in surgery at the nose, paranasal sinuses und anterior skull base. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 30 patients were enrolled in this study with chronic rhinosinusitis, inverted papilloma, frontal sinus mucocele, frontal sinus osteoma, chronic dacryocystitis and pituitary adenoma

[Frontobasal fractures in children].

In 1987, four children between 5 and 13 years of age with severe frontobasal trauma and dural tears were treated operatively. A CSF rhinorrhea was manifest clinically in only two cases. In addition high-resolution computerised tomography was essential in diagnosis and planning of the operation. In each of the cases an intracranial pneumatocele indicating dural laceration was shown. The fractures were confirmed during surgery in: Case 1. The roof of the ethmoid sinus and the roof of the orbit. Case 2. Both the sphenoid sinuses. Case 3. The roof of the ethmoid sinus and the posterior wall of the

Sex estimation of frontal sinus volume from computed tomography scans in a Western Australian adult population.

With the increasing use of radiological three-dimensional imaging, different metric and morphological aspects of the frontal sinuses (FS) have been examined relative to their potential to aid human identification, including sex estimation. The aim of this study is to assess the validity of the metric analysis of the FS volume for estimating sex in a Western Australian (WA) adult population, following the Michel et al. (2015) method. The right, left and total frontal sinus volume (TFSV) from 99 computed tomography scans (47 males and 52 females) of WA individuals aged 18-40 years were three-dim

Association of radiological evidence of frontal sinus disease with the presence of frontal pain.

BACKGROUND: Rhinosinusitis is a common cause of frontal pain. We evaluated the relationship between frontal pain and the type and degree of frontal sinus disease in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) patients. METHODS: Inclusion criteria were presence of frontal sinusitis or frontal recess obstruction on computed tomography scan. Office notes and operative reports were reviewed to determine the presence and location of frontal pain and categorization of sinus disease. RESULTS: Two-hundred seven patients were identified with frontal recess obstruction and/or frontal sinus disease. Thirty-one of 37 …

Giant osteoma of the frontal sinus.

Osteoma is the most common benign tumour of the nose and paranasal sinuses, and the frontal sinus is its most frequent location. This tumour may be discovered incidentally on radiographs, or may enlarge to produce symptoms and, rarely, complications referable to its location near the orbit and anterior cranial vault. A 61-year-old man presented with right proptosis was found to have a giant osteoma involving frontal sinus. The aetiology, presenting features, and treatment of this tumour are reviewed.

The role of mitomycin C in surgery of the frontonasal recess: a prospective open pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Mitomycin C (MMC) inhibits fibroblast proliferation. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of MMC in reducing frontal ostium stenosis after endoscopic sinus surgery. METHODS: A prospective open pilot study was conducted in 28 patients who had undergone one or more previous surgical interventions for frontal sinusitis. MMC solution was applied to the frontal ostial region via an endoscopic or combined endoscopic and external approach. Patency of the frontal ostium was evaluated endoscopically during regular follow-up. If restenosis was observed further, endoscop…

Intracranial Complications Following Acute Rhinosinusitis in a Pediatric Patient Requiring Surgery: A Case Report.

Intracranial complications secondary to acute sinusitis in pediatric patients are rare but potentially life-threatening. Initially, the symptoms are nonspecific, which can result in a delayed diagnosis. If a patient presents with persistent fever and severe headache, an intracranial complication should be suspected and promptly investigated using imaging techniques such as contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Here, we describe a case in which both a frontal epidural abscess and an interhemispheric subdural empyema developed following acute rhinosinus

Bilateral Frontal Sinus and Epidural Mucopyocele Drainage Using "Modified" Draf III.

Introduction: Draf III is a surgical technique which uses endoscopic approach to access the frontal sinus, by leaving almost no skin markings and having minimal side effects. The technique is most frequently indicated for frontal chronic refractory sinusitis, followed by mucoceles and skull base or paranasal tumors. The aim of Draf III is to drain frontal sinus masses and collections. Clinical Presentation: In this report, we present a 16-year-old male with progressive headaches, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting whose imaging revealed left-predominant bilateral frontal epidural mucocele and abs

Topical drug delivery in chronic rhinosinusitis patients before and after sinus surgery using pulsating aerosols.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common chronic disease of the upper airways and has considerable impact on quality of life. Topical delivery of drugs to the paranasal sinuses is challenging, therefore the rate of surgery is high. This study investigates the delivery efficiency of a pulsating aerosol in comparison to a nasal pump spray to the sinuses and the nose in healthy volunteers and in CRS patients before and after sinus surgery. METHODS: (99m)Tc-DTPA pulsating aerosols were applied in eleven CRSsNP patients without nasal polyps before and after sinus surgery. In addition,

Brain Abscess Caused by Bifidobacterium spp. in a Previously Healthy Adolescent: A Case Report.

Brain abscesses in children are uncommon but serious conditions. Bifidobacterium species, typically considered commensal organisms of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and female genital tract, are rarely implicated in invasive infections. We present a case of multiple brain abscesses caused by Bifidobacterium spp. in a previously healthy 11-year-old male, secondary to contiguous spread from chronic left-sided paranasal sinusitis with ethmoid bone erosion. Neuroimaging demonstrated left frontal abscesses with marked perilesional edema, ring enhancement and midline shift, together with o
