Design of Wearable Hand Rehabilitation Glove With Bionic Fiber-Reinforced Actuator.

BACKGROUND: The hand motor function is lost and activities in daily life (ADLs) are affected due to some illnesses such as stroke and hemiplegia. As a coping way, we present a wearable rehabilitation glove with the bionic actuator for restoring the hand function and the motor control ability lost by stroke patients. METHODS: The soft pneumatic bionic actuator (SPBA) is developed on the basis of the research of human hand bone structure and finger joint characteristics and a series of tests are conducted. Besides, we built the rehabilitation glove system based on the proposed SPBAs to verify t

Ultra-Robust and Extensible Fibrous Mechanical Sensors for Wearable Smart Healthcare.

Fibrous material with high strength and large stretchability is an essential component of high-performance wearable electronic devices. Wearable electronic systems require a material that is strong to ensure durability and stability, and a wide range of strain to expand their applications. However, it is still challenging to manufacture fibrous materials with simultaneously high mechanical strength and the tensile property. Herein, the ultra-robust (≈17.6 MPa) and extensible (≈700%) conducting microfibers are developed and demonstrated their applications in fabricating fibrous mechanical senso

Molecular Rationale for the Design of Instantaneous, Strain-Tolerant Polymeric Adhesive in a Stretchable Underwater Human-Machine Interface.

Strain-tolerant reversible adhesion under harsh mechanical deformation is important for realizing long-lasting polymeric adhesives. Despite recent advances, cohesive failure within adhesives remains a critical problem that must be solved to achieve adhesion that is robust against humidity, heat, and mechanical stress. Here, we report a molecular rationale for designing an instantaneous polymeric adhesive with high strain tolerance (termed as iPASTE) even in a stretchable human-machine interface. The iPASTE consists of two biocompatible and eco-friendly polymers, linearly oligomerized green tea

Praxis skills and executive function in children with neurofibromatosis type 1.

This study aimed at examining motor and ideomotor praxis skills in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). The impact of executive dysfunction, frequently described in children with NF1, on the expression of praxis impairments was also studied. Eighteen children with NF1 were included and matched with 20 control children for age (7-14 years), sex, laterality, and parental education level. Both groups of children underwent an assessment based on cognitive models of apraxia including visuomotor tasks, executive tests, and everyday life questionnaires. The group of children with NF1 showed

The Role of Sensorimotor Difficulties in Autism Spectrum Conditions.

In addition to difficulties in social communication, current diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum conditions (ASC) also incorporate sensorimotor difficulties, repetitive motor movements, and atypical reactivity to sensory input (1). This paper explores whether sensorimotor difficulties are associated with the development and maintenance of symptoms in ASC. First, studies have shown difficulties coordinating sensory input into planning and executing movement effectively in ASC. Second, studies have shown associations between sensory reactivity and motor coordination with core ASC symptoms, s

[Suture simulator - Cleft palate surgery].

INTRODUCTION: Cleft palate requires surgery in the first years of life, furthermore repairing anatomically the soft and hard palate is complex on a surgical level because of the fine tissues and the local intraoral configuration. It is valuable to train first on simulators before going to the operating room. However, there is no material dedicated to learning how to perform intraoral sutures in cleft palate surgery. We made one, in an artisanal manner, in order to practice before the real surgical gesture. BUILDING THE SIMULATOR: The simulator was designed based on precise anatomical data. A

Relative Attribute SVM+ Learning for Age Estimation.

When estimating age, human experts can provide privileged information that encodes the facial attributes of aging, such as smoothness, face shape, face acne, wrinkles, and bags under-eyes. In automatic age estimation, privileged information is unavailable to test images. To overcome this problem, we hypothesize that asymmetric information can be explored and exploited to improve the generalizability of the trained model. Using the learning using privileged information (LUPI) framework, we tested this hypothesis by carefully defining relative attributes for support vector machine (SVM+) to impr

Dimensions of driving anger and their relationships with aberrant driving.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between driving anger and aberrant driving behaviours. An internet-based questionnaire survey was administered to a sample of Chinese drivers, with driving anger measured by a 14-item short Driving Anger Scale (DAS) and the aberrant driving behaviours measured by a 23-item Driver Behaviour Questionnaire (DBQ). The results of Confirmatory Factor Analysis demonstrated that the three-factor model (hostile gesture, arrival-blocking and safety-blocking) of the DAS fitted the driving anger data well. The Exploratory Factor Analysis on DBQ

Functional range of movement of the hand: declination angles to reachable space.

The measurement of the range of hand joint movement is an essential part of clinical practice and rehabilitation. Current methods use three finger joint declination angles of the metacarpophalangeal, proximal interphalangeal and distal interphalangeal joints. In this paper we propose an alternate form of measurement for the finger movement. Using the notion of reachable space instead of declination angles has significant advantages. Firstly, it provides a visual and quantifiable method that therapists, insurance companies and patients can easily use to understand the functional capabilities of

Importance of ivermectin to human onchocerciasis: past, present, and the future.

Ivermectin (registered for human use as Mectizan®) was donated by Merck & Co Inc in 1987 for the treatment and control of human onchocerciasis ("river blindness"). This philanthropic gesture has had a remarkable effect in reducing the incidence and prevalence of this serious ocular and dermatological disease, while changing health system support for millions of people worldwide. Over 800 million doses have been given to more than 80 million people for onchocerciasis during the past 23 years. As a result, onchocerciasis has been significantly reduced in more than 25 countries, transmission has

Predictive fatigue-aware human-robot collaboration: a real-time, open-source ROS 2 instantiation of a three-module human-centric digital twin framework on a standard cobot.

Industry 5.0 cobotics calls for collaborative robots that adapt to the operator's physical and cognitive state in real time. Most current industrial deployments remain reactive, responding only after explicit commands and ignoring the operator's psychophysiological condition. The three-module Human-Centric Digital Twin (HCDT) framework establishes the upstream perception-and-reasoning architecture for such systems using Vision-Language Models, and identifies closed-loop feedback and physical-assistance mechanisms as the natural next layer in the framework's development. Building on that founda

fMRI Response of Parietal Brain Areas to Sad Facial Stimuli in Mild Depression.

fMRI markers of mild depression were revealed using standard emotional test. Patients with mild depression and healthy volunteers were asked to determine gender of subjects in photographs with different emotional expressions (neutral, surprise, disgust, confusion, anger, sadness, fear, and joy). The pattern of response to different emotions was universal in both groups and included the largest clusters in the occipital region, as well as a certain volume in the parietal lobes and posterior lateral frontal cortex. In depression group, a lack of activation in the middle cingulate gyrus (bilatera

The interaction between embodiment and empathy in facial expression recognition.

Previous research has demonstrated that the Action-Observation Network (AON) is involved in both emotional-embodiment (empathy) and action-embodiment mechanisms. In this study, we hypothesized that interfering with the AON will impair action recognition and that this impairment will be modulated by empathy levels. In Experiment 1 (n = 90), participants were asked to recognize facial expressions while their facial motion was restricted. In Experiment 2 (n = 50), we interfered with the AON by applying transcranial Direct Current Stimulation to the motor cortex. In both experiments, we found that

The neuropsychological pattern of corticobasal degeneration: comparison with progressive supranuclear palsy and Alzheimer's disease.

The pattern of cortical and subcortical neuropathologic lesions in corticobasal degeneration (CBD) should predict a specific cognitive profile in this disease. To characterize this profile and to determine its specificity by comparison with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type (SDAT), we used an extensive neuropsychological battery assessing global efficiency, executive functions, various tests of encoding and retrieval, dynamic motor organization, and upper limb praxis. We compared the performance of patients with CBD (n = 15) with that of controls

Look2React: Making VR NPCs Come Alive with Dynamic Vision-Guided Reactions.

A central promise of virtual reality (VR) games is the increased control players have over their character through pose and body language. However, many non-player character (NPC) systems fail to respond convincingly to these poses, user intent, and situational context, limiting immersion. We present Look2React, an interaction system that captures what NPCs see, using a vision-based reasoning model to select pose and text responses. Look2React endows NPCs with the ability to react dynamically and appropriately to player interactions. Through a gaze and proximity-based detection system inspired

Effect of test instructions: The example of the pantomime production task.

The production of pantomime is a sensible task to detect praxis deficits. It is usually assessed by presenting objects visually or by verbal command. Verbal instructions are given either by providing the name of the object (e.g., "Show me how to use a pen") or by requiring the object function (e.g., "Show me how to write"). These modes of testing are used interchangeably. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the different instructions generate different performances. Fifty-one healthy participants (17-89 years old) were assessed on three pantomime production tasks differing for the

FlexHapComm: A Flexible Wearable Haptic Interface with Dynamically Programmable Shape-Morphing Patterns Enabling Bidirectional Communication.

Haptic feedback with bidirectional communication can effectively enhance the realism and immersion in human-machine interaction. In this work, we propose the FlexHapComm interface, a flexible wearable haptic communication interface that functions as an electronic-skin system. It enables dynamically programmable shape-morphing haptic feedback patterns and supports real-time bidirectional haptic interaction by cointegrating actuation and sensing units. The interface designs an array of hydraulic amplified self-healing electrostatic (HASEL) actuators, each with a diameter of 8 mm and capable of g
