Aspergillus mycetoma in a secondary hydroxyapatite orbital implant: a case report and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: The authors describe the first case report of a fungal abscess within a hydroxyapatite orbital implant in a patient who had undergone straightforward secondary hydroxyapatite implant surgery. DESIGN: Case report and literature review. INTERVENTION: Four months postoperatively after pegging and 17 months after original implant placement, chronic discharge and socket irritation became evident. Recurrent pyogenic granulomas were a problem, but no obvious area of dehiscence was present over the implant. The peg and sleeve were removed 31 months after pegging (44 months after original

Long-term MRI findings of muslin-induced foreign body granulomas after aneurysm wrapping. A report of two cases and literature review.

Muslin-induced foreign body granulomas are rare delayed complications after wrapping of intracranial aneurysms. Few small case series have been reported, with a paucity of documented MRI findings. In addition, there are no reports on long-term radiological appearances or temporal evolution of conservatively managed patients. We thus report on the long-term radiological and clinical follow-up of two patients with asymptomatic muslin-induced foreign body granulomas after wrapping of recurrent middle cerebral arterial aneurysms. Both patients were successfully managed conservatively and remain as

Histochemical and immunohistochemical localisation of elastic system fibres in focal reactive overgrowths of oral mucosa.

Eight specimens each of the following groups were investigated: gingival pyogenic granuloma, fibrous epulis, calcifying fibrous epulis, peripheral giant cell granuloma, giant cell fibroma (four gingival, four non-gingival), denture-irritation hyperplasia and fibroepithelial polyp. These lesions have diverse histopathological appearances but the composition of their connective tissue is poorly defined. The elastic system consists of a complex mixture of glycoproteins that in normal oral mucosa form three differentially distributed fibre types; oxytalan, elaunin and elastic. The elastic system w

The Epidemiology of Non-Melanocytic Benign and Malignant Skin Tumors in Pediatric Patients Attending to the Dermatology Department.

BACKGROUND: Non-melanocytic skin tumors are rarely seen in pediatric patients; although they are mostly benign, they remain to be elucidated by histopathological examination. The objective of the study was to describe the epidemiology of non-melanocytic skin tumors in children attending to our dermatology department. METHOD: The histopathologic studies of all skin punch and excisional biopsies of children up to 16 years old referred to our dermatology department between January 2007 and January 2012 were reviewed retrospectively. Melanocytic tumors and cystic and infectious lesions were exclu

Mucinous Syringometaplasia in the Inguinal Region: Case Report and Literature Review.

A 66-year-old man presented with a pedunculated papule measuring 9.0 mm in the left inguinal region. Excision was performed based on the clinical hypotheses of soft fibroma and pyogenic granuloma. Histopathologic evaluation demonstrated invagination of the epidermis, with a tubular tortuous path showing the presence of squamous cells and goblet cells rich in mucin, and adjacent epithelium showing acanthosis, papillomatosis, and hyperkeratosis, with a diagnosis of mucinous syringometaplasia. This is a rare entity, with 19 cases reported to date, including the present case, usually clinically di

The Diagnostic Considerations and Clinical Management of Lower Lip Swellings in Adolescents: A Narrative Review.

This article outlines a systematic workflow for the clinical management of lip swellings, ensuring an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. The process involves a thorough clinical examination and necessary diagnostic investigations such as imaging and biopsy, which will guide treatment decisions. Depending on the findings, treatment may range from conservative management to surgical excision. Further, we have covered a range of potential conditions including benign lesions such as fibroma, hemangioma, and pyogenic granuloma, as well as malignant neoplasms such as mucoepidermoid c

A Conspicuous Nodule Over the Scalp: A Case Report.

Trichilemmomas are benign and rare tumors of hair follicles that usually present as warty nodules and consist of clear and intermediate cells. A 34-year-old Indian man who initially presented with a complaint of a lesion over the left parietal region of the scalp and with a tendency to bleed on touch was clinically diagnosed with a pyogenic granuloma. It was managed by excising the lesion and the excised tissue was sent for histopathological examination, which was found to be a benign cutaneous adnexal neoplasm suggestive of a trichilemmoma. The patient is currently under follow-up and reports

Topical beta-blockers in dermatologic therapy.

An increasing use of beta-blockers in dermatology has been described over the last 10 years, despite the fact that their use in diseases other than infantile hemangiomas is off-label. This review discusses the emerging role of topical beta-blockers in the treatment of infantile hemangioma, but also pyogenic granuloma, Kaposi sarcoma, wounds and nail paronychia. Data in literature demonstrate that topical beta-blockers are a safe and valid therapeutic option in numerous cutaneous diseases. Side effects are mainly restricted to the application site. Further studies and randomized trials may cont

Metastasis of a Renal Collecting Duct Adenocarcinoma to the Oral Cavity After Tooth Extraction.

Metastatic tumors rarely occur in the oral cavity. The most common of the oral metastases are lung cancers in males, and breast and genital cancers in females. The most common primary tumor metastasis to the oral cavity is from the lung, kidney, liver, prostate, and colorectal cancers. The metastatic lesions are similar to oral lesions such as pyogenic granuloma, giant cell lesions, gingival polyps, hemangioma, peripheral fibroma, and adenoid squamous cell carcinoma. Therefore, the diagnosis of primary tumors is challenging. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case to feature metastas

Metastatic adenocarcinoma of the colon: early manifestation in gingival tissue.

A case of gingival metastasis of adenocarcinoma of the colon is reported, the lesion being an early clinical indication of a primary malignant tumor. The diagnosis of metastatic lesion in the oral region is always challenging, both to clinician and to the pathologist, due to its rarity and complexity. In the present case, the clinical hypothesis was peripheral ossifying fibroma or pyogenic granuloma. Histologically, the biopsy tissue revealed a malignant neoplasm not connected to the mucosal surface. Immunohistochemically, the lesion was positive for 35ßH11 and cytokeratin 20 and focally posit

Oral presentation of Kaposi's sarcoma in a patient without severe immunodeficiency.

Primary oral Kaposi's sarcoma of the "traditional type" (non-African, non-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, nonimmunosuppressed) is a rare disorder. Presentation of this disorder at this site has not been well documented in the surgical pathology literature. This report describes a primary oral Kaposi's sarcoma in an older man without evidence of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or overt immunosuppression; this sarcoma recurred three times before a correct diagnosis was made. The case illustrates the importance of including Kaposi's sarcoma in the differential diagnosis. The lesions ca

A volumetric assessment and follow-up of a granuloma gravidarum in the anterior maxilla.

AIM: Granuloma gravidarum (GG) is a benign lesion of the soft tissue. The aim of this technical note is the volumetric assessment and follow-up 3D measurement of a GG in the anterior maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 35-year-old female patient who was 7 months pregnant was referred due to a soft tissue tumor in the papilla of tooth 21. A biopsy verified a pyogenic granuloma gravidarum. Initial and consecutive volumeatric measurements were made with an intraoral scanner during the patient's pregnancy and until 16 months postpartum. RESULTS: The volumetric assessment showed a continuous growth

Clinical outcomes of peri-implant peripheral giant cell granuloma: a report of three cases.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a reactive lesion that occurs on the gingiva or alveolar mucosa and contains numerous giant cells. Its recurrence rate is 10%. Only five cases associated with dental implants have been reported. This case report describes three additional cases with clinical courses and outcomes. METHODS: Three women presented with a chief complaint of a gingival mass around the implants. The lesions were surgically excised under local anesthesia. RESULTS: The initial diagnosis at presentation was pyogenic granuloma. Radiography showed marginal bone loss

Wet table salt and its saturated hypertonic solution for treating retinoic acid resistant plane viral warts on face.

Plane viral warts on the face can be difficult to treat at times. Various treatment approaches for facial viral warts have had variable degrees of effectiveness. In contrast, the majority of existing treatments are more costly, painful, and difficult to manage. In approximately 15.6% of instances, retinoic acid (0.05%) is also ineffective. It is very difficult to cure warts on the face at a young age. In pyogenic granuloma, table salt (NaCl) is useful as a sclerosing agent, and its hypertonic solution (15%) is effective in prolabial mucoceles. The aim of treating viral warts is to necrose infe

Ultrasonographic features of an intravascular lobular capillary hemangioma originating in the basilic vein: Case report and literature review.

Intravascular lobular capillary hemangioma (ILCH) is a rare variant of pyogenic granuloma, which develops within the lumen of a blood vessel. Here, we report the case of a 38-year-old male presenting with a mobile, incompressible, nonpulsatile nodule in the superficial fascia of the forearm. A first ultrasonographic examination diagnosed the mass as intravascular thrombosis with partial recanalization. Three months later, a second ultrasonographic examination concluded to the existence of an intravascular tumor, which finally turned out at pathological examination to be ILCH. Here, we report t

Bacillary angiomatosis in an immunocompetent child: a case report and review of the literature.

Bacillary angiomatosis is an infectious disease caused by 2 gram-negative bacilli, Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana. This disease is characterized by vascular proliferations in the skin and/or visceral organs, and typically manifests in immunocompromised patients. However, we report a case of a 10-year-old immunocompetent female child with a questionable history of being scratched by a cat. Although initially diagnosed as a pyogenic granuloma, a diagnosis of bacillary angiomatosis was made based on histologic examination of the excised lesion demonstrating interstitial bacillary dep

Lobular capillary hemangioma of the trachea: the second case.

A benign lesion also known as pyogenic granuloma, lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH) is relatively common a cutaneous and mucosal lesion. Earlier reports of LCH within the larynx and trachea have been reviewed and determined to be granulation tissue with an earlier history of airway trauma. Histopathologic review varies over time in this vascular lesion. Earlier, there is an extensive inflammatory infiltrate similar to granulation tissue; however, this becomes fibromyxoid as the lesion matures. An appropriate history is therefore mandatory to exclude any potential trauma, which would lead to g

Metastatic endometrial adenocarcinoma to the skin of a toe.

A 55-year-old woman had a history of prolonged vaginal bleeding. Dilatation and curettage confirmed poorly differentiated endometrial adenocarcinoma. After hysterectomy, salpingo-oophorectomy, and 5,040 cGy of postoperative irradiation, lung metastases developed, which temporarily responded to chemotherapy that included adriamycin and cisplatin. Metastatic lesions developed later in the left acetabulum and the hallux. The latter, clinically reminiscent of pyogenic granuloma, affected only skin. The poorly differentiated toe metastasis duplicated areas of the primary endometrial adenocarcinoma
