Unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary behavior drive untreated dental caries among adolescents: A population-based study.

Untreated dental caries remains a significant public health challenge, particularly among adolescents, where it can compromise well-being and quality of life. This population-based study investigates the factors associated with untreated dental caries in 12-year-olds across the five most populous cities (each with > 80,000 inhabitants) in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Using WHO criteria, clinical oral examinations and self-reported behavioral data were collected. Guided by a social determinants of health framework, we conducted univariable and multilevel logistic regression analyses

How digital reading habits shape reading motivation and comprehension over time: Longitudinal associations in primary school.

Nowadays, children's reading habits extend beyond traditional printed texts, embracing new practices and forms through digital devices. The influence of such new digital reading habits on reading motivation and comprehension development remains largely underexplored. This study aimed to explore reciprocal causal paths between digital reading habits, reading comprehension and intrinsic reading motivation. To do so, we analyzed longitudinal data of 908 Spanish students from Grades 4 to 6. We estimated random-intercept and cross-lagged panel models to examine long-term associations between our ma…

Post-COVID gambling habits of adolescents and young adults in Aragon, Spain: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Gambling has become increasingly normalized in Spain, with 49.3% of the population participating and high engagement among youth, particularly online. Despite legal restrictions, some studies have reported that over 20% of adolescents aged 14-19 reported gambling in 2022. These findings raise concerns about gambling disorder, which affects 4.7% of Spanish youth and is linked to other mental health problems. Factors such as advertising and the COVID-19 pandemic may have contributed to this trend. This study, part of the GAMBL-OUT project, examines gambling behaviors among young peop

The aim of the present study was to examine the consistency of self-reported lifetime abstention and never-binge drinking, respectively, using national, longitudinal data collected in 2019 and 2020. Additionally, the prevalence of alcohol-related morbidity among lifetime abstainers was examined by linking survey data to alcohol-related morbidity data in a national patient register. Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome Based on Activity Type and Dietary Habits in Extremely Low-Income Individuals.

A high prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and cardiovascular disease among low-income individuals has often been reported. However, there is still a lack of research on the relationship between basic livelihood security (BLS) and MS. This study investigated the prevalence of MS according to activity type, dietary habits, and the nutrient intake characteristics of individuals receiving BLS. Data from 14,803 men and 20,299 women were analyzed to assess the association between receiving BLS and MS. The associations between MS and various factors were analyzed separately in men and women by log…

Feeding habits and malaria parasite infection of Anopheles mosquitoes in selected agroecological areas of Northwestern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Surveillance of the host-anopheline mosquitoes' interaction is important for assessing malaria transmission risk and guiding vector control. We assume that changes in malaria vector species' feeding habits, as well as the surrounding environment, have a substantial impact on varied malaria transmission. In this study, we determined the vertebrate host feeding patterns of anopheline mosquitoes to characterize entomologic risk factors for malaria in Jabi Tehnan, Northwestern Ethiopia. METHODS: Blood-fed anophelines surveyed during malaria surveillance in Jabi Tehnan district of nort…

Association of Oxidative-Stress-Related Gene Polymorphisms with Pain-Related Temporomandibular Disorders and Oral Behavioural Habits.

The frequency of selected polymorphisms, one in each gene coding for proteins with antioxidative properties (CAT(rs1001179), SOD2(rs4880), GPX1(rs1050450), and NQO1(rs689452)), was compared between patients suffering from pain-related temporomandibular disorders (TMDp; n = 85) and control subjects (CTR; n = 85). The same was evaluated when participants were divided with respect to oral behavioural habits frequency into high-frequency parafunction (HFP; n = 98) and low-frequency parafunction (LFP; n = 72) groups. Another aim was to investigate whether polymorphisms in these genes can be associa…
