Acute common peroneal neuropathy due to hand positioning in normal labor and delivery.

BACKGROUND: Foot drop has been described as an infrequent complication from common peroneal nerve injury related to external compression and forceful knee flexion while pushing during vaginal delivery. Past recommendations include placing the hands at the posterior thighs rather than the legs to avoid this complication. CASE: A 32-year-old woman developed unilateral foot drop after vaginal delivery. Electromyography was diagnostic for an acute compression neuropathy of the common peroneal nerve above the knee. CONCLUSION: The patient's likely mechanism of injury occurred during delivery from

Trismus-pseudocamptodactyly syndrome: case report ten years after.

BACKGROUND: In 1969, Hecht and Beals described for the first time a rare dominant autosomal syndrome characterised by reduced mouth opening, pseudocamptodactyly, short stature, and foot deformities. Recent studies have confirmed that TPS is caused by a mutation of MYH8 that is common to another disease called Carney syndrome. CASE REPORT: The authors describe the long term follow-up of a case presented in 2003, ten years after the first surgical procedure: a 14-year-old girl, affected by this rare syndrome, had underwent an early (at 4 years) surgical treatment of bilateral coronoidotomies to

Adams-Oliver syndrome: further evidence of an autosomal recessive variant.

Adams-Oliver syndrome is characterized by aplasia cutis congenita and variable degrees of terminal transverse limb defects. Other associated anomalies were described in the syndrome. Most described cases follow an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. Sporadic and autosomal recessive cases, however, were reported. In this study, we report on three Egyptian patients with Adams-Oliver syndrome from three different families. The parents were normal and consanguineous in all three families. There was history of similarly affected sibs for two cases. These findings denote autosomal recessive i

Bilateral hands and feet postaxial polydactyly presenting with renal vascular anomalies.

The current Observation reports polydactyly of both the hands and feet in a 36 years old male cadaver that presented also with supernumerary renal vessels. The right kidney received the upper and lower supernumerary renal arteries from the abdominal aorta and was drained by the two renal veins. The anterior and posterior supernumerary renal veins opened separately into the inferior vena cava. Observations on the limbs revealed the presence of six digits in the four limbs. In the hands the extra digit contained two phalanges and rudimentary metacarpals that were pear-shaped. The pointed ends of

Adams-Oliver syndrome and hepatoportal sclerosis: occasional association or common mechanism?

Adams-Oliver syndrome (AOS) is characterized by the association of scalp and skull defects and abnormalities of terminal limbs. Congenital heart malformations have also been reported. Hepatoportal sclerosis (HPS) is a rare cause of portal hypertension in children characterized by abnormalities of intra-hepatic portal veins, portal fibrosis, and nodular regeneration. Etiopathogenesis of these rare disorders remains unclear, but the hypothesis of vascular thrombotic mechanism has been suggested. Association of both syndromes has been reported in only one child. We now report on two unrelated chi

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome (EEC): report of a case with perioral papillomatosis.

We report a 13-year-old boy with ectodermal dysplasia, ectrodactyly, and syndactyly, hypospadias, photophobia, conductive hearing loss, and perioral papillomatosis. His father had ectrodactyly and hypotrichosis. The clinical picture suggested ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome. The presence of perioral papillomatosis, classically seen in Goltz syndrome, has been reported only once before in EEC syndrome.

Acanthosis nigricans: a new cutaneous sign in severe atopic dermatitis and Down syndrome.

Acanthosis nigricans (AN) occurs associated with many different systemic diseases, such as endocrine disorders and internal malignant neoplasms. To our knowledge, the association of AN with severe atopic dermatitis (AD) or Down syndrome has not been described before. This 82-month retrospective study included 1038 patients: AN was present in 4.9% of atopic patients and 50.9% of subjects with Down syndrome. AN was more frequent in patients with severe AD and in 100% of cases of hand dermatitis and juvenile plantar dermatosis, located on the interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal joints, wherea

Autosomal dominant inheritance of abnormalities of the hands and feet with short palpebral fissures, variable microcephaly with learning disability, and oesophageal/duodenal atresia.

We report two families with an autosomal dominant syndrome of abnormalities of the hands and feet, short palpebral fissures, and variable microcephaly with learning disability. Between a third and a quarter of cases are born with oesophageal atresia, duodenal atresia, or both. Individual patients have hypoplastic thumbs or congenital heart disease. The phenotype of the syndrome reported here is similar to that observed in 13q22-qter deletion patients. However, chromosome analysis has not detected any structural abnormality in our patients.

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome (EEC): the clinical variation and prenatal diagnosis.

Six patients with the ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome, namely five members of the same family and one sporadic case, are presented. One of the main features of the EEC syndrome, ectrodactyly, was missing in five of the patients. The diagnosis did not become clear until the youngest son of the family was born. All of our six patients had a low birth weight and some were born preterm, and four had poly- and/or syndactyly without ectrodactyly. A low birth weight and polysyndactyly have been reported previously in patients with the EEC syndrome and might be features of th

Autosomal recessive type of whistling face syndrome in twins.

A report of concordant monochorionic, diamnionic like-sex twins with whistling face syndrome is presented. The diagnosis was based on the characteristic facies with prominent supraorbital ridge, sunken eyes, telacanthus, short nose and colobomata of the nostrils, long philtrum, high narrow palate, and marked microstomia with puckered lips and an "H"-shaped cutaneous dimpling on the chin. The hands showed symmetrically clenched fingers with camptodactyly and ulnar deviation. The feet demonstrated mild bilateral talipes equinovarus. HLA studies to determine the zygosity of the twins showed disco

Prognostic impact of hand-foot skin reaction in regorafenib-treated adult-type diffuse gliomas: A multicenter Turkish Oncology Group study.

Glioblastoma, IDH-wildtype is the most aggressive primary brain tumor in adults, and treatment options for recurrent disease are limited. Regorafenib, an oral multikinase inhibitor, has shown efficacy in glioblastoma at first recurrence, but its role in later recurrences and in other adult-type diffuse gliomas remains unclear. This multicenter retrospective study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of regorafenib and to identify prognostic factors in patients with adult-type diffuse gliomas, including glioblastoma, who were treated at the second or subsequent recurrences. A total of 68 p

A preclinical evaluation of cytarabine prodrug nanofibers assembled from cytarabine-lauric acid conjugate toward solid tumors.

Cytarabine (Ara-C) has become cornerstones for the treatment of hatmatological malignancies for several decades; however, it still faces serious challenges in clinical applications due to its side effects such as hand foot syndrome (HFS) and stomatitis. Therefore, considerable researchers have devoted to looking for the new derivative with desirable activity and low toxicity. A new prodrug based on the conjugation of cytarabine with lauric acid (LA-Ara) was synthesized in our group, and it could self-assemble into nanofibers (NFs) in aqueous solution with high drug loading (57 wt%). The lauric

Management of sorafenib-related adverse events: a clinician's perspective.

Sorafenib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is approved for the treatment of patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC). It is being evaluated in phase II and III clinical trials, which include treatment as a single agent (locally advanced/metastatic radioactive iodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer [DTC]), as part of multimodality care (HCC), and in combination with chemotherapeutic agents (metastatic breast cancer). Sorafenib-related adverse events (AEs) that commonly occur across these tumor types include hand-foot skin reaction (
