OBJECTIVES: The risk of injury to children riding bicycles has been previously documented. However, the specific risk arising from the use of bicycles as a mode of transportation to and from school is unknown. This study examines the incidence of bicycle related injuries among school age children.
METHODS: A comprehensive prospective injury registration system was established in Stavanger, Norway. Data were obtained from this system to identify bicycle related injuries occurring from 1990-3 to children aged 10-15. The incidence of injuries was computed for two groups of children: (1) children

Recently, there has been increased concern about microstructural brain changes after head trauma. Clinical studies have investigated a neck collar that applies gentle bilateral jugular vein compression, designed to increase intracranial blood volume and brain stiffness during head trauma, which neuroimaging has shown to result in a reduction in brain microstructural alterations after a season of American football and soccer. Here, we utilized a swine model of mild traumatic brain injury to investigate the effects of internal jugular vein (IJV) compression on histopathological outcomes after in

Road traffic injuries (RTIs) involving two-wheeled vehicles are a leading cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The increasing popularity of short-term rental bicycles and e-scooters has raised public health concerns. We aimed to compare neurological injuries and neurosurgical utilization between scooter and bicycle (S/B) users and motorcyclists and to identify risk factors associated with TBI and its severity. A retrospective single-center study including all two-wheeler RTI patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a trauma center between 2011 and 2022. Variables included demogr

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Helmet-Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (H-CPAP) is a non-invasive respiratory support that is used for the treatment of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), a severe medical condition diagnosed when symptoms like profound hypoxemia, pulmonary opacities on radiography, or unexplained respiratory failure are present. It can be classified as mild, moderate or severe. H-CPAP therapy is recommended as the initial treatment approach for mild ARDS. Even though the efficacy of H-CPAP in managing patients with moderate-to-severe hypoxemia remains unclear, its use ha

BACKGROUND: Between 3 and 15% of winter sports-related injuries are related to head injuries, which are the primary cause of mortality and disability among skiers. Despite the widespread adoption of helmets in winter sports, which has reduced the incidence of direct head injury, there is a paradoxical trend of an increasing number of individuals wearing helmets sustaining diffuse axonal injuries (DAI), which can result in severe neurologic sequelae.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 100 cases collected by the senior author of this work from 13 full winter seasons during the period from 198

AIM: E-scooters were introduced to New Zealand in 2018 as a means of city transport. Since their introduction, their use has resulted in high injury rates. No studies have directly compared e-scooters to other forms of transport.
METHOD: The Auckland City Hospital trauma registry was retrospectively searched for patients admitted with an e-scooter injury. A comparison group of patients admitted with an injury secondary to cycling during the same period was collected.
RESULTS: 178 patients were identified: 69 with e-scooter injuries and 109 with injuries sustained while cycling. The hospitali

BACKGROUND: The maxillofacial structures are commonly affected in motorcycle crashes, with the mandible being one of the most frequently fractured bones. Helmets have been shown to have a protective effect in preventing maxillofacial injuries, however, its effect on the occurrence of mandibular fractures is not very well established.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the pattern of mandibular fractures among motorcycle crash victims in Tanzania, and determine the role of helmets in occurrence of mandibular fractures among the motorcyclists.
METHODOLOGY: This was a 6-months prospective, cross-sectional

PURPOSE: Helmet therapy is a non-surgical option for treating positional plagiocephaly, and its effectiveness has been validated by various researches. In addition to cranial flattening and asymmetry, ipsilateral prominence of the mid-face and relative anterior transposition of the ipsilateral ear is also common. Hence, we investigated the impact of helmet therapy on mid-facial asymmetry.
METHODS: Ninety-nine patients diagnosed with positional plagiocephaly and treated by helmet therapy between September 2005 and July 2012 were enrolled. Therapy was initiated at various ages: group I, <6 mont

INTRODUCTION: Since the introduction of all-terrain vehicles (ATV) to the United States in 1971, injuries and mortalities related to their use have increased significantly. Furthermore, these vehicles have become larger and more powerful. As there are no helmet requirements or limitations on engine-size in the State of Alabama, we hypothesised that larger engine size would correlate with an increased incidence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in patients following an ATV crash.
METHODS: Patient and ATV data were prospectively collected on all ATV crashes presenting to a level one trauma centre

Modern ballistic helmets defeat penetrating bullets by energy transfer from the projectile to the helmet, producing helmet deformation. This deformation may cause severe injuries without completely perforating the helmet, termed "behind armor blunt trauma" (BABT). As helmets become lighter, the likelihood of larger helmet backface deformation under ballistic impact increases. To characterize the potential for BABT, seven postmortem human head/neck specimens wearing a ballistic protective helmet were exposed to nonperforating impact, using a 9 mm, full metal jacket, 124 grain bullet with veloci

BACKGROUND: In India, female motorized two-wheeler users involved in road traffic accidents account for 70,000 injuries and fatalities annually. Despite federal helmet laws, New Delhi exempted female pillion riders (backseat passengers) from mandatory helmet usage in response to religious and cultural opposition. This study attempts to elucidate factors influencing female pillion riders' helmet usage, hypothesizing religious-based opposition and poor understanding of helmet efficacy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-section of female pillion riders in five areas of New Delhi were approached by

PURPOSE: In a plant where flux-cored arc welding was applied to stainless steel, we investigated changes in airborne and internal metal exposure following improvements of exhaust ventilation and respiratory protection.
METHODS: Twelve welders were examined at a time in 2008 and in 2011 after improving health protection. Seven welders were enrolled in both surveys. Exposure measurement was performed by personal sampling of respirable welding fume inside the welding helmets during one work shift. Urine and blood samples were taken after the shift. Chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and manganese (Mn)

Non-synostotic deformational plagiocephaly (DP) is head asymmetry that results from external forces that mold the skull in the first year of life. Primary care providers are most likely to encounter DP when infants present for well-child care, and for this reason it is important that providers be competent in assessing, diagnosing, and participating in the prevention and management of DP. The purpose of this two-part series on DP is to present an overview of assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based management of DP for health care providers. In Part I we provide a brief background of DP and a

OBJECT: Helmet use has been associated with fewer hospital visits among injured skiers and snowboarders, but there remains no evidence that helmets alter the intracranial injury patterns. The authors hypothesized that helmet use among skiers and snowboarders reduces the incidence of head injury as defined by findings on head CT scans.
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective review of head-injured skiers and snowboarders at 2 Level I trauma centers in New England over a 6-year period. The primary outcome of interest was intracranial injury evident on CT scans. Secondary outcomes include

Accidents, injuries, and deaths sustained via all-terrain vehicle (ATV) use are on the rise. In addition to safe and proper ATV operation, accident-related risk factors include operator controllable behaviors such as helmet use, alcohol use, and deciding whether or not to carry a passenger. What the operator has little or no control over, however, is the inherently unstable ATV design with its narrow wheelbase, short turning radius, and high center of gravity, in addition to common use of low tire pressure to maximize maneuverability. These factors lead to musculoskeletal injuries that consist

School nurses often are the first healthcare professionals to diagnose lice infestations in children. Although lice do not transmit disease, many schools send children home if they detect live head lice. It is the position of the National Association of School Nurses that children who have been treated for lice infestations should not be excluded from school because of the presence of residual nits. The primary goals of the school nurse in controlling infestations are to identify children with head lice and to break the cycle of reinfestation. Routine screening of children for head lice is oft

The circumstances in which we mechanically test and critically assess human calvarium tissue would find relevance under conditions encompassing real-world head impacts. These conditions include, among other variables, impact velocities, and strain rates. Compared to quasi-static loading on calvaria, there is less reporting on the impact loading of the calvaria and consequently, there are relatively fewer mechanical properties on calvaria at relevant impact loading rates available in the literature. The purpose of this work was to report on the mechanical response of 23 human calvarium specimen
