Ischemia reperfusion (I/R) injury which inevitably occurs during heart transplantation is the major factor leading to organ failure and graft rejection. In order to develop new therapies to prevent I/R injury, we used both a murine heart transplantation model with 24 hour cold I/R and an in vitro cell culture system to determine whether growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is a protective factor in preventing I/R injury in heart transplantation and to further investigate underlying mechanisms of I/R injury. We found that cold I/R caused severe damage to the endocardium, epicardium and myoc

The present study has been designed to investigate the possible role of protein kinase C-delta (PKC-delta) in hyperhomocysteinemia-induced attenuation of cardioprotective potential of ischemic preconditioning (IPC). Rats were administered L-methionine (1.7 g/kg/day, p.o.) for 4 weeks to produce hyperhomocysteinemia. Isolated Langendorff perfused normal and hyperhomocysteinemic rat hearts were subjected to global ischemia for 30 min followed by reperfusion for 120 min. Myocardial infarct size was assessed macroscopically using triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining. Coronary effluent was

INTRODUCTION: Burn survivors experience higher rates of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke compared to non-burned individuals. These responses are due, in part, to lower exercise adherence perhaps associated with impaired thermoregulation. Improving heat dissipation and exercise "comfort" may minimize this barrier to exercise adherence in burn survivors.
PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that whole-body skin wetting would attenuate the rise in core temperature and heart rate, as well as improve perceptual responses, during exercise in the heat in burn survivors relative to non-burne

OBJECTIVES: The construction industry produces the highest number of occupational injuries in Spain (25.6%). Of these, 98.5% were minor injuries with 5 million workdays lost in 2000. This occurred even after the recent introduction of numerous health and occupational safety regulations. The objective of the present study was to identify the specific mechanisms of minor occupational injuries in the construction sector.
METHODS: In 2000, there were 235,853 minor occupational injuries in the construction industry. From these, injuries in general construction and civil engineering were selected (

After 96 h goldfish exposure to 10, 25 or 50 mg/L of Ni(2+) no Ni accumulation was found in the brain, but lipid peroxide concentration was by 44% elevated in the brain, whereas carbonyl protein content was by 45-45% decreased in the heart. High molecular mass thiol concentration was enhanced by 30% in the heart, while in the brain low molecular mass thiol concentration increased by 28-88%. Superoxide dismutase activity was by 27% and 35% increased in the brain and heart, respectively. Glutathione peroxidase activity was lowered to 38% and 62% of control values in both tissues, whereas catalas

The adult mammalian heart is known to have very limited regenerative capacity, explaining at least in part the frequency of cardiovascular diseases and their impact as the leading cause of death worldwide. By contrast, the neonatal heart has the ability to regenerate upon injury, and the molecular mechanisms underlying this regenerative capacity are intensely investigated to provide novel cues for the repair of the adult heart. However, the existing rodent neonatal injury models-apex resection, left anterior descending artery ligation and cryoinjury-have limitations, such as being technically

The cardioprotective effect of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) and ischemic postconditioning (IPoC) in adult hearts is mediated by nitric oxide (NO). During the early developmental period, rat hearts exhibit higher resistance to ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, contain higher levels of serum nitrates, and their resistance cannot be further increased by IPC or IPoC. NOS blocker (L-NAME) lowers their high resistance. Wistar rat hearts (postnatal Days 1 and 10) were perfused according to Langendorff and exposed to 40 min of global ischemia followed by reperfusion with or without IPoC. NO and rea

OBJECTIVE: Chest radiography is the first-line imaging examination for assessment of thoracic polytrauma, serving to evaluate the extent of injury and facilitate early triage to observation, further imaging, or immediate surgical intervention. The objective of this article is to review the spectrum of injuries that occur in the chest and upper abdomen after blunt and penetrating trauma. Pathophysiology, imaging findings, and management recommendations will be discussed for injuries to the chest wall, diaphragm, pleura, lungs, mediastinum, heart, aorta, and great vessels.
CONCLUSION: Chest rad

BACKGROUND: Pediatric congenital heart disease patients are at risk for vascular injuries during surgical procedures or when the arterial system is accessed for monitoring or diagnostic studies. Our treatment of emergent situations in this patient population using microvascular techniques shows the feasibility of such techniques.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients aged 0-18 years with congenital heart disease identified six patients who underwent microvascular surgery by the senior surgeon from June 2007 to May 2015. We studied this series, highlighting technical aspects of sur

Complications of open inguinal hernia repair, such as wound infection, hematoma, seroma, and neuralgia, are known to occur. Vascular injuries during inguinal hernia repair are rare and documented as case reports only. Vascular malformations are known to occur after trauma or sharp injuries. Most of the venous malformations are congenital in origin and usually reported in relation to congenital heart disease or in visceral locations. We encountered an iatrogenic venovenous malformation (VVM) in the subcutaneous space of the left inguinal region following an open inguinal hernia repair. This VVM

Cardiac foreign bodies, especially those with sharp tips, may lead to unpredictable complications, such as penetrating cardiac injuries. Yet there have not been many reports of penetrating cardiac injuries caused by a needle that migrates from the neck to the heart. We herein present a review of such a case, focusing on the dynamic monitoring by perioperative echocardiography. The needle was represented on the monitor as a linear artifact that had penetrated through the ventricular wall and caused increasing pericardial effusion. Fortunately, the needle was successfully removed before it compl

INTRODUCTION: Neurologic complications, including seizures, are common in pediatric patients undergoing heart surgery, especially those requiring postoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), requiring prompt, vigilant postoperative monitoring. Prolonged EEG monitoring in critically ill children presents a risk of scalp/pressure injuries. The skin's sensitivity to microcirculatory changes can also provide valuable insights into the patient's overall tissue perfusion, making it a critical component in the management of these vulnerable patients.
METHODS: We initiated a quality impr

INTRODUCTION: The Department of Defense has continually refined body armor to mitigate battlefield injuries over the last 20 years. Penetrating axilla injuries remain challenging despite adoption of a four-plate ceramic armor system. This study investigates the efficacy of current armor configurations in reducing mortality and morbidity associated with axilla injuries.
METHODS: This was a retrospective case series using afteraction reports from a single Special Operations unit. Records (786) from 2001-2018 were screened, yielding 11 meeting inclusion criteria. Data included injuries, body arm

Cardiac arrest from electrical shock or lightning strike is associated with significant mortality and requires modification and extension of standard advanced life support measures to achieve successful resuscitation. Patients who experience electrical shock or lightning strike may sustain cardiac and respiratory arrest secondary to the direct effects of current. However, the majority of victims have associated multisystem involvement, including neurologic complications, cutaneous burns, and associated blunt trauma. As a result, a combination of advanced cardiac life support measures and advan

Mammalian tissues calcify with age and injury. Analogous to bone formation, osteogenic cells are thought to be recruited to the affected tissue and induce mineralization. In the heart, calcification of cardiac muscle leads to conduction system disturbances and is one of the most common pathologies underlying heart blocks. However the cell identity and mechanisms contributing to pathological heart muscle calcification remain unknown. Using lineage tracing, murine models of heart calcification and in vivo transplantation assays, we show that cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) adopt an osteoblast cell-lik
