BACKGROUND: Impaired virus clearance in a subgroup of atopic dermatitis (AD) patients can lead to severe herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections called eczema herpeticum (EH). We recently identified a type 2 skewed viral immune response in EH patients. The characteristic manifestations of HSE include cerebrospinal fluid with mild cytopenia, dominated by lymphocytes, elevated protein, and normal blood glucose values (3.9-6.1 mmol/L). PURPOSE: To describe a case series of patients with unilateral, posterior interstitial keratitis presumed to be caused by herpes simplex virus.
METHODS: Retrospective case series.
