Siamogale melilutra was a large otter from the Late Miocene site of Shuitangba in Yunnan Province, China. Previous analyses have hypothesized that the species was a molluscivore and a dominant predator in an otherwise depauperate local carnivoran guild. Here we describe limb elements of S. melilutra and perform quantitative analyses to categorize the functional morphology of the species to better understand its role in the predominantly aquatic and near-water environments at Shuitangba. A case of non-syndromic, complete syndactyly involving all four limbs is described in a three-month-old male crossbreed dog for the first time. Syndactyly is a rare condition in most animal species, in dogs it has been infrequently reported. Findings of clinical, radiographic and cytogenetic analyses are described and demonstrate probably for the first time that numerical and structural chromosome aberrations are not involved in the pathogenesis of this case of syndactyly.

This report describes a case of polydactyly in the hind-limb of a West African Dwarf goat kid in South West Africa. Physical examination revealed the presence of four digits in each of the hind limbs. Radiological examination and macerated bones of the animal showed a bifid shape of each metatarsal that was more prominent from the distal half of the diaphysis. This resulted in the presence of four articulating surfaces per limb at the distal extremity. The effect of the intravenous administration of dantrolene 3.5 mg/kg body weight on leg metabolism during porcine malignant hyperthermia (MH) was investigated in six Pietrain pigs. Arterial pH improved only slowly after dantrolene and was associated with the continuing efflux of lactate from the leg. Oxygen uptake by the leg had returned to control values 30 minutes after dantrolene. Glucose production by the leg was observed during malignant hyperthermia but this was rapidly abolished by dantrolene. A new gene-cell construct expressing nerve growth factor (NGF) has been developed. After obtaining engineered adenovectors Ad5-RGD-CAG-NGF and Ad5-RGD-CAG-EGFP, transduction efficiency and transgene expression were studied and multiplicity of infection was determined. The efficacy of transduced human olfactory ensheathing cells expressing NGF in restoring motor activity in rats has been shown in a limited period of time. Improved rat hindlimb mobility and cyst size reduction after gene-cell construct transplantation were more likely due to the cellular component of the construct.

The long bones of 72 individuals of extant platyrrhines, belonging to 17 species (11 genera) were studied by regressions of length, diameters and curvature. Two young German shepherd dog littermates had progressive, painless, hindlimb ataxia. In both dogs plain radiography of the vertebral column revealed a solitary mineralised lesion on the dorsal laminae between the dorsal spines of the second and third thoracic vertebrae, and myelography with iopamidol demonstrated cord compression at the level of the lesions.
