USMSIT/NMUSIT Fundamental Guide on Diagnostic and Interventional Hip Ultrasonography.

Hip pain arises from a spectrum of intra-articular, periarticular, and neurogenic conditions. Ultrasound offers real-time, radiation-free visualization of the hip joint, adjacent soft tissues, and peripheral nerves - making it an essential tool in contemporary musculoskeletal evaluation. Guided by the EURO-MUSCULUS/USPRM framework, this guideline proposes a standardized, anatomy-based protocol for both diagnostic and interventional hip ultrasonography. Developed under the educational mission of the Ultrasound and Musculoskeletal/Neuromuscular Sonography Initiative in Taiwan - through its USMSI

Contribution of Lower Extremity Joints on Energy Absorption during Soft Landing.

Soft landing after jumping is associated with the prevention of lower extremity injuries during sports activities in terms of the energy absorption mechanisms. In this study, the contribution of lower extremity joints during soft landing was investigated. Subjects comprised 20 healthy females. Kinetics and kinematics data were obtained during drop vertical jumps using a three-dimensional motion analysis system. Negative mechanical work values in the lower extremity joints were calculated during landing. A multiple regression analysis was performed to determine which lower extremity joints cont

Two-Stage Treatment for Ankylosing Spondylitis With Severe Hip Contracture.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a progressive inflammatory disease that often involves the hip, causing deformities and dysfunction. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) may be used, but contracture of the hip joint in ankylosing spondylitis makes THA technically difficult and leads to poor efficacy. This retrospective study describes a novel 2-stage surgical treatment for ankylosing spondylitis of the hip and evaluates its efficacy relative to THA alone. Patients with ankylosing spondylitis and severe hip flexion contracture treated between 2011 and 2017 were assigned to either an experimental group or an

Scintigraphy in skeletal trauma.

Five case reports demonstrate the value of bone scintigraphy in trauma. The bone scans clearly demonstrated fractures of the hip and pelvis that were not radiologically evident or the presence of which was doubtful, and also identified a number of unsuspected fractures in a patient with multiple injuries.

Extremity fractures in the patient with a traumatic brain injury.

Extremity fractures are common in patients with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). These injuries are often inadequately treated and occasionally are completely missed due to the unique problems inherent to the TBI patient. However, appropriate evaluation of the TBI patient allows prompt diagnosis and optimal treatment of extremity fractures. The increased survival rate of these patients has resulted in a greater emphasis on minimizing dysfunction and disability, especially that due to concomitant orthopaedic trauma. Advances in anesthestic technique permit earlier operative fixation of extremit

[Traumatic hip dislocations. Epidemiologic data at Davos Hospital and a multicenter study in Graubünden Canton].

We report about 86 patients with traumatic dislocation of the hip. Group 1 consisted of 26 patients of the hospital of Davos, group 2 of 60 patients of a multi-center evaluation of 7 hospitals in the Kanton Graubünden. 53 were males and 33 females. 13 patients were 16 years old or younger, of these 5 below 10 years. 69% are injuries in sports, 66% in alpine skiing. 78 had a posterior, 5 an anterior and 3 central dislocation with a fracture of the floor of the acetabulum. Concomitant local injuries were seen in 76.9% of traffic accidents and only in 22% of skiing injuries. Closed reduction was

Neglected traumatic hip dislocation in children.

Traumatic dislocation of the hip in children is a rare injury. We report the outcome of open reduction of neglected traumatic posterior hip dislocation in 18 children. All patients had posterior dislocation and no associated fracture. They presented to the hospital because of persisting pain, deformity, and limp that were present for a mean period of 16 weeks after injury (range, 6-52 weeks). Open reduction was done in all patients because none of the hips could be reduced by skeletal traction in abduction. All of the hips had varying degrees of avascular necrosis (osteonecrosis), with preserv

A Contemporary International Expert Consensus Statement on the Evaluation, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Rehabilitation of Injuries to the Posterolateral Corner of the Knee.

PURPOSE: To use a modified Delphi technique to generate an expert consensus statement on the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of posterolateral corner (PLC) injuries of the knee. METHODS: A 5-individual working group developed a list of 62 statements regarding PLC injuries for use in a 3-round modified Delphi series. Ultimately, 40 statements were retained, and a 100% participation rate was observed in all rounds. Consensus for each statement was quantified. RESULTS: Overall, 82.5% of statements reached consensus. Consensus was reached regarding the following: (1) The dia

[Hip arthroscopy. Portal technique and arthroscopic anatomy].

In hip arthroscopy everything revolves around entry points. Only with a precise entry technique are safety and efficiency guaranteed. Most pathological changes of the hip for which an arthroscopic intervention can be used are located in the central compartment: two lateral (anterolateral and posterolateral) and one anterior portal are the three standard portals allowing an optimal approach to practically all pathological changes in this compartment. Significant diseases and lesions can occur in the peripheral compartment which would be overlooked by arthroscopy of the central compartment. Two

Fractures of the acetabulum: accuracy of reduction and clinical results in patients managed operatively within three weeks after the injury.

The results were reviewed for 259 patients who had open reduction and internal fixation of 262 displaced acetabular fractures within twenty-one days after the injury. Two hundred and fifty-five hips were followed for a mean of six years (range, two to fourteen years) after the injury; the remaining seven, which clearly had a poor result, were followed for less than two years. According to the classification of Letournel and Judet, associated fracture types accounted for 208 (79 per cent) of the fractures, with both-column fractures being the most common type (ninety-two hips; 35 per cent). Two
