Surrogacy Wars: Notes for a Radical Theory of the Politics of Reproduction.

State regulation of reproductive practices secure the heterosexual infrastructure of kinship through means that include elitization, institutional hostility, and plain criminalization. This article draws on personal experiences of gay fathers through transnational gestational surrogacy in Spain to show the extent to which that is the case even in those contexts where some gay and lesbian kinship rights are available. Public and academic debates on the possible regulation of gestational surrogacy will be analyzed through the lens of Gayle Rubin's intervention in the sex wars that divided femini

Lesbian, gay, & bisexual older adults: linking internal minority stressors, chronic health conditions, and depression.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to: (1) test whether the minority stressors disclosure of sexual orientation; and (2) internalized heterosexism are predictive of chronic physical health conditions; and (3) depression; (4) to test direct and indirect relationships between these variables; and (5) whether chronic physical health conditions are further predictive of depression, net of disclosure of sexual orientation and internalized heterosexism. METHODS: Secondary analysis of national, community-based surveys of 2349 lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults aged 50 and older residing in the US utilizing

Spiritual and Sexual Identity: Exploring Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Clients' Perspectives of Counseling.

Although religious and spiritual issues have emerged as areas of focus in counseling, very few scholars have explored the meaning and experiences of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) clients who addressed their sexual and religious/spiritual identities in counseling. Using consensual qualitative research (CQR; Hill, 2012), the current study explores the perspectives of 12 LGB persons who sought counseling that involved religious/spiritual concerns. Four themes in participant interviews are identified, including (a) self-acceptance, (b) goals of counseling, (c) identification with counselor, and

The invisible elderly: lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender older adults.

More than 2 million older adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). The purpose of this article is to present an overview of the physical and mental health needs of LGBT older adults to sensitize nurses to the specific needs of this group. Nurses are in a prominent position to create health care environments that will meet the needs of this invisible, and often misunderstood, group of people.

Measuring community connectedness among diverse sexual minority populations.

Theory and research agree that connectedness to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community is an important construct to account for in understanding issues related to health and well-being among gay and bisexual men. However, the measurement of this construct among lesbian and bisexual women or racial and ethnic minority individuals has not yet been adequately investigated. This study examined the reliability and validity of an existing measure of connectedness to the LGBT Community among a diverse group of sexual minority individuals in New York City, and whether differences

Barriers to optimal care between physicians and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning adolescent patients.

The objective of this article was to identify barriers to optimal care between physicians and LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning) adolescents. To this end, 464 anonymous, self-administered surveys were distributed in 2003 to residents and attending physicians in pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics-gynecology, psychiatry, emergency medicine, and family practice at Upstate Medical University. The survey included questions pertaining to practice, knowledge, and attitude pertaining to lesbian, gay, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) adolescents. One hundred eight fo

Factors influencing the career and academic choices of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

This is an empirical study of academic and career choices for 119 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students using a questionnaire. Respondents who reported that their sexual orientation influenced their choices a great deal indicated that the influences were both positive and negative. This group was most likely to have experienced anti-LGBT discrimination in the past. In comparing lesbian, bisexual people, and gay males, gay males and respondents from visible minorities were the most likely to feel a negative impact, while bisexual respondents were the least likely. There were t

Emotional distress among LGBT youth: the influence of perceived discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The authors evaluated emotional distress among 9th-12th grade students, and examined whether the association between being lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgendered (i.e., "LGBT") and emotional distress was mediated by perceptions of having been treated badly or discriminated against because others thought they were gay or lesbian. Data come from a school-based survey in Boston, Massachusetts (n = 1,032); 10% were LGBT, 58% were female, and ages ranged from 13 to 19 years. About 45% were Black, 31% were Hispanic, and 14% were White. LGBT youth scored significantly higher on the scale of dep

Evaluating the phobias, attitudes, and cultural competence of Master of Social Work students toward the LGBT populations.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests there is bias toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons by social workers; unfortunately, little research has been conducted to examine Master of Social Work (MSW) students' views toward these populations. The purpose of this study was to develop an assessment scale to evaluate the attitudes, phobias, and cultural competence of MSW students toward the LGBT populations. METHODS: An assessment scale was developed and administered to MSW students (n = 173) at a Midwestern American university. RESULTS: The majority of MSW students reported low ph

Gut microbiome composition influences immunologic alterations in the blood and gut of HIV-positive and HIV-negative men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: HIV infection and factors associated with sexual activity among men who have sex with men (MSM) can dysregulate relationships between the gut microbiome and immune system. METHODS: To explore these relationships in depth, blood and colonic biopsy samples from HIV+ and HIV- MSM and non-MSM were analyzed using Cytometry by Time of Flight (CyTOF). Immune profiles were then integrated with gut microbiome composition and MSM-related behaviors. RESULTS: HIV infection status influenced immune cell composition in colonic biopsies, marked by a loss of CD4⁺ CD103⁺ and CD8⁺CD103⁺ tissue-res

[Progress in research of recent HIV infection in club drug abusing men who have sex with men].

With the increased prevalence of club drug use in men who have sex with men(MSM) worldwide, high-risk sexual behaviors have made club drug-abusing MSM a key population at high risk for recent HIV infection. Despite the decrease in recent years, the incidence of recent HIV infection is still high in this population, which is influenced by multiple factors, such as demographic characteristics, including young age, differences in educational attainment, and high mobility, and behavioral characteristics, including club drug use pattern, multiple sexual partners, group sex, and complex cross-group

Effectiveness of community-based PrEP delivery for men who have sex with men: a global systematic review and meta-analysis.

UNLABELLED: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a critical HIV prevention tool for men who have sex with men (MSM), used throughout as an inclusive umbrella term encompassing gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Yet, the global effectiveness of community-based delivery models across the prevention cascade remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis (Prospero registered: CRD420261382434) provides a comprehensive global synthesis of community-based PrEP delivery for MSM. Following PRISMA guidelines, six databases were searched (2015-2023), and random-effects m

Monkeypox claims new victims: the outbreak in men who have sex with men.

Monkeypox has a very prominent regional epidemic. It has been confined to Western and Central African countries. Sporadic cases found in countries outside Africa generally have a history of sojourn in endemic areas. However, the recent multinational outbreak of monkeypox cases in Europe in early May 2022 has revealed a changing epidemiological trend, those confirmed cases had no sojourn history in endemic areas and with a high proportion of cases involving men who have sex with men (MSM). Among the MSM cases, many of them presented atypical clinical manifestations of monkeypox and with other s

Under-Reporting of Known HIV-Positive Status Among People Living with HIV: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Monitoring progress towards the UNAIDS 'first 90' target requires accurate estimates of levels of diagnosis among people living with HIV (PLHIV), which is often estimated using self-report. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis quantifying under-reporting of known HIV-positive status using objective knowledge proxies. Databases were searched for studies providing self-reported and biological/clinical markers of prior knowledge of HIV-positive status among PLHIV. Random-effects models were used to derive pooled estimates of levels of under-reporting. Thirty-two estimates from 26 st

Prevalence and genotype distribution of human papillomavirus infection in different anatomical sites among men who have sex with men: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at increased risk of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection because of their high-risk sexual behaviours. In this study, a meta-analytic approach was used to systematically analyse the literature to elucidate the prevalence and genotype distribution of anal, penile, oral and urethral HPV infection among MSM in the world. To carry out this systematic review, five electronic databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched for relevant studies published from January 2012 to November 2019, and pertinent data were collec
