Association Between Neighborhood Deprivation and Gestational Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a major global health concern, affecting maternal and child health. Although genetic predispositions and individual medical histories are well-recognized risk factors, emerging research suggests a significant impact of external factors like neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics. This study systematically reviews and meta-analyzes the association between neighborhood deprivation and GDM incidence. We searched multiple databases up to January 10, 2024, for studies linking neighborhood deprivation with GDM. Eligible studies were selected based on predef

Effects of neighborhood disadvantage on cortisol and interviewer-rated anxiety symptoms in breast cancer patients initiating treatment.

PURPOSE: Shorter breast cancer (BC) survival outcomes persist by neighborhood disadvantage independent of patient, tumor, and treatment characteristics. This suggests unaccounted mechanisms by which neighborhood disadvantage "gets under the skin" to impact BC survival outcomes. Here, we evaluate the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage and clinical and neuroendocrine markers of stress in BC patients. METHODS: Women with stage 0-III BC were enrolled 2-10 weeks post-surgery and before initiating adjuvant treatment in a study examining stress and stress management processes. Women prov

Family structure and changes in living arrangements among elderly nonmarried parents.

We used Longitudinal Study of Aging data to investigate change between 1984 and 1986 in living arrangements of older nonmarried parents, focusing on transitions from living alone and living with children to living alone, with children, with others, and institutionalization. Predictors reflect opportunities for coresidence (number and gender of children), resources, needs, and (indirect measures of) attitudes. We find that those with more children are more likely to change from living alone to living with a child. However, number of children does not affect the odds of moving from living with a

A synergy-based lower limb exoskeleton that embodies natural human motor intelligence.

A key issue in wearable robotics is the design of an exoskeleton robot with human-like motor capabilities to match the wearer's natural locomotion in daily life. It poses a challenge for an exoskeleton to replicate the sophisticated motor intelligence that enables humans to master a variety of agile motor skills. We herein propose a new design principle for lower limb exoskeletons that can transfer human motor intelligence to the robotic mechanical system and thereby endow the designed exoskeleton with natural locomotion capabilities. We first captured the synergistic characteristics among low

The role of steroid hormones in the sexual differentiation of the human brain.

Widespread sex differences in human brain structure and function have been reported. Research on animal models has demonstrated that sex differences in brain and behavior are induced by steroid hormones during specific, hormone sensitive, developmental periods. It was shown that typical male neural and behavioral characteristics develop under the influence of testosterone, mostly acting during perinatal development. By contrast, typical female neural and behavioral characteristics may actually develop under the influence of estradiol during a specific prepubertal period. This review provides a

Design of 3D printable prosthetic foot to implement nonlinear stiffness behavior of human toe joint based on finite element analysis.

Toe joint is known as one of the critical factors in designing a prosthetic foot due to its nonlinear stiffness characteristic. This stiffness characteristic provides a general feeling of springiness in the toe-off and it also affects the ankle kinetics. In this study, the toe part of the prosthetic foot was designed to improve walking performance. The toe joint was implemented as a single part suitable for 3D printing. The various shape factors such as curved shape, bending space, auxetic structure, and bending zone were applied to mimic human foot characteristics. The finite element analysis

Experimental animal models of acute respiratory distress syndrome: one-hit and two-hit establishment application.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a complex syndrome with multiple risk factors that can lead to acute respiratory failure and, in turn, high morbidity and mortality. To clarify the syndrome's underlying pathomechanisms and develop novel therapies, we have summarized and analyzed a series of chief cause-induced animal models of ARDS. AIM: Although various animal models have been developed to represent the traits of human ARDS based on clinical symptoms and the yardstick of positive clinical trials, each model has unique features that reflect only part of the characteri

The optical properties of the anterior segment of the eye: implications for cortical cataract.

Epidemiological studies have correlated cortical cataract with exposure to light and have suggested that this is due primarily to relatively short wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation (UV-B). In addition, some cellular and animal models also implicate UV-B. In order to evaluate the likely role of different wavelengths of light in the etiology of cortical cataracts, the optical characteristics of several animal models were ascertained and compared to the primate. This study shows that the mouse model absorbs UV-B almost exclusively whereas other animal models such as the rabbit and the guinea p

From mannequins to humans - are manual therapy motor skills transferable? A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Manual therapy, including spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), is a core component of chiropractic education. Simulation tools such as the Human Analogue Mannequin (HAM®) have been developed and coupled with force-sensing technology to support safe and structured training of SMT force-time characteristics. However, it remains unclear whether motor skills acquired using these tools are transferable to real-world scenarios. METHODS: This sequential explanatory mixed-methods observational study investigated whether chiropractic students, proficient at applying a set of pre-specified SMT

Mechanical modeling of palatal snoring.

The mechanism of human snoring caused by vibration of the soft palate and the characteristics of the noise are investigated. The soft palate becomes unstable and vibrates violently once the inspiratory flow exceeds a critical speed. The physiological phenomenon is modeled by studying flow over a flexible plate. In determining the stability of this flow, the trailing edge conditions are crucial. It is found that the noise generated in the simple experimental configuration has distinct characteristics found in human snores. For example, there is an antiphase relation between unsteady pressures f

[Physiological and Pharmacological Characteristics of Women].

This review article summarises current knowledge on gender-specific differences in physiology and pharmacology and discusses their clinical relevance. Historically, women have often been regarded as a "deviating norm" in research, clinical studies and practice. Gender-specific medicine closes these gaps by systematically recording differences in the endocrine system, metabolism, immune system and pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics and integrating them into diagnostics, therapy and prevention. For this purpose, a literature search was conducted, taking into account review articles and primary st

Comparison of mutations in human parainfluenza viruses during passage in primary human bronchial/tracheal epithelial air-liquid interface cultures and cell lines.

UNLABELLED: Human parainfluenza virus (HPIV) causes respiratory infections, which are exacerbated in children and older people. Correct evaluation of viral characteristics is essential for the study of countermeasures. However, adaptation of viruses to cultured cells during isolation or propagation might select laboratory passage-associated mutations that modify the characteristics of the virus. It was previously reported that adaptation of HPIV3, but not other HPIVs, was avoided in human airway epithelia. To examine the influence of laboratory passage on the genomes of HPIV1-HPIV4, we evaluat

The design and evaluation of bionic porous bone scaffolds in fluid flow characteristics and mechanical properties.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: At present, there is a lack of efficient modeling methods for bionic artificial bone scaffolds, and the tissue fluid/nutrient mass transport characteristics of bone scaffolds has not been evaluated sufficiently. This study aims to explore an effective and efficient modeling method for biomimetic porous bone scaffolds for biological three-dimensional printing based on the imitation of the histomorphological characteristics of human vertebral cancellous bone. The fluid mass transport and mechanical characteristics of the porous scaffolds were evaluated and compared with

IARC use of oxidative stress as key mode of action characteristic for facilitating cancer classification: Glyphosate case example illustrating a lack of robustness in interpretative implementation.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has formulated 10 key characteristics of human carcinogens to incorporate mechanistic data into cancer hazard classifications. The analysis used glyphosate as a case example to examine the robustness of IARC's determination of oxidative stress as "strong" evidence supporting a plausible cancer mechanism in humans. The IARC analysis primarily relied on 14 human/mammalian studies; 19 non-mammalian studies were uninformative of human cancer given the broad spectrum of test species and extensive use of formulations and aquatic testing. The mam

An ecosyndemic framework for understanding obesity: Spatial clustering of health, environmental and socioeconomic disadvantage in the Netherlands.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity and related health conditions are unevenly distributed across neighborhoods, often co-occuring with multiple health challenges and socioeconomic disadvantages. Using an ecosyndemic framework, which integrates ecological and social dimensions that contribute to the clustering of health problems, this study examines how adverse obesity-related health outcomes spatially cluster in relation to obesogenic environments and socioeconomic position (SEP) across Dutch neighborhoods. METHODS: Nationwide neighborhood-level data on health outcomes, obesogenic environmental exposures
