Simple reaction times (RTs) are inversely related to the luminance of a visual region, with RT increasing as luminance decreases, and decreasing as luminance increases. A potential discrepancy in the link between luminance and RT, however, stems from the perception of luminance itself. Here, we tested whether RT is modulated by a measureable amount of light (luminance) or perceptual amount of light (brightness), as two test regions having the same luminance can be perceived as having different brightness. The current study investigates the effects of brightness using probes and artificial perc

The flash-lag effect is a visual illusion where a moving image is perceived to be advanced in its spatial location relative to a flashed image. Multiple studies have shown that the flash-lag effect can be enhanced by increasing the uncertainty of the moving and/or flashed images. However, little is known about the effect of task-irrelevant visual objects on the flash-lag effect. We were interested to see whether a task-irrelevant spatial landmark might reduce uncertainty and hence reduce the flash-lag effect. We placed a fixed bar between moving and flashed bars while measuring the flash-lag e

The phantom sound perception mechanism by which a sound perception occurs without any external sound source is still enigmatic. According to our previous fMRI study, a small region in the parietal operculum 3 was hyperactivated as a function of tinnitus periodicity in subjects with acoustic trauma tinnitus sequelae. This region was localized in the vicinity of neural correlates of middle-ear tympano-ossicular chain movements due to pressure variations. Disturbed proprioceptors are known to trigger illusory perceptions; therefore, we hypothesized that a disturbance of middle-ear proprioceptors

Several studies have demonstrated that prestimulus occipital alpha-band activity substantially influences subjective perception and discrimination of near-threshold or masked visual stimuli. Here, we studied the role of prestimulus power fluctuations in two visual phenomena called double-flash illusion (DFI) and fusion effect (FE), both consisting of suprathreshold stimuli. In both phenomena, human subjects' perception varies on a trial-by-trial basis between perceiving one or two visual stimuli, despite constant stimulation. In the FE, two stimuli correspond to veridical perception. In the DF

The biomedical research community relies directly or indirectly on immunocytochemical data. Unfortunately, validation of labeling specificity is difficult. A common specificity test is the preadsorption test. This test was intended for testing crude antisera but is now frequently used to validate monoclonal and affinity purified polyclonal antibodies. Here, the authors assess the power of this test. Nine affinity purified antibodies to different epitopes on 3 proteins (EAAT3, slc1a1; EAAT2, slc1a2; BGT1, slc6a12) were tested on samples (tissue sections and Western blots with or without fixatio

The reproductive body has become the site of intensive medical intervention, yet, paradoxically, women have never been more at risk of suffering the distress of infertility. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 22 infertile women, this article explores their reproductive experience from fertility postponement to assisted conception. All had used both modern contraception and in vitro fertilisation, yet none achieved the fertility they desired, when they desired it. All had structured their use of these technologies around the social practice of postponement. Modern contraception, however, while

Further evidence in support of the thesis developed in a previous article published in Medical Hypotheses (Sept. 2000) proposing that schizophrenic vulnerability might consist of the temporal instead of the nasal foveal projections crossing over in the chiasma opticum has been provided by an experiment in which pinholes are used to isolate foveally stimulated from peripherally stimulated vergence. By shifting the pinholes inwards or outwards a dilemma is created regarding the fusion of the edges of the two pinholes or of a single diode light seen at the inner or outer edges of the pinholes. It

The rubber limb illusion (RLI) describes a perceptual phenomenon where synchronous stroking of a hidden real and a visible artificial limb induces ownership for the fake limb, i.e., the sensation as if it belongs to one's body. Previous research suggests that the induction of ownership in the RLI is closely related to the referral of touch, i.e., the perception that the observed touch on the artificial limb causes the tactile sensation. However, the ultimate importance of touch referral for eliciting limb ownership remains unclear. To help answer this question, the present study re-analyzed th

Multisensory integration (MSI) deficits in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) have recently attracted growing interest in both clinical and research realms, MSI being crucial in maintaining well-coordinated responses to external stimuli. In this framework, we exploited the Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI), an experimental procedure that induces healthy individuals to embody a fake hand by integrating multisensory body-related cues, to address potential alterations of the embodiment phenomenon in PD. Specifically, we leveraged a visuo-tactile (VT; Experiment 1) and a visuo-motor (VM; Experiment 2

The current study sought to examine factors that affect vection (the illusory experience of self-motion in the absence of real motion), visually-induced motion sickness, and one's sense of presence in a passive virtual reality driving simulation by exposing participants to 60-s pre-recorded driving laps and recording their self-reported metrics as well as their head motion patterns during the laps. Faster virtual driving speed (average 120 mph vs. 60 mph) resulted in significantly higher ratings of vection and motion sickness. Reclined posture (30° back) was examined as a possible mitigating f

Humans possess a remarkable ability to discriminate structure from randomness in the environment. However, this ability appears to be systematically biased. This is nowhere more evident than in the Gambler's Fallacy (GF)-the mistaken belief that observing an increasingly long sequence of "heads" from an unbiased coin makes the occurrence of "tails" on the next trial ever more likely. Although the GF appears to provide evidence of "cognitive bias," a recent theoretical account (Hahn & Warren, 2009) has suggested the GF might be understandable if constraints on actual experience of random source

Visual motion can influence the perceived position of an object. For example, in the flash-drag effect, the position of a stationary flashed object at one location appears to shift in the direction of motion presented at another location in the visual field (Whitney & Cavanagh, 2000). The results of previous physiological studies suggest interactions between motion and position information in very early retinotopic areas. However, it is unclear whether the position information that has been distorted by motion further influences the visual processing stage at which adaptable position mechanism

Visual information regarding limb location can override proprioceptive information when there is conflict between the two-a phenomenon referred to as visual capture. In three experiments, we employed the "mirror illusion," in which the perceived location of one's hand is influenced by the visual information specified by the mirror reflection of the other hand, to test whether visual capture influences body-based indications of the extent of objects. Participants viewed their visible hand and its reflection in a mirror after the unseen hand was positioned at one of four locations on a tabletop.

In 1812, Georg Sachs published a medical dissertation concerning his own albinism and that of his sister. However, he also goes on to describe another phenomenon--namely synaesthesia involving colors for music and simple sequences (including numbers, days, and letters). Most contemporary researchers of synaesthesia fail to cite the case when offering a history of the subject and fewer still will have read it (the original was published in Latin). In this article, we argue that Sachs's case is the first convincing account of synaesthesia; we provide the first English translation of his descript

This article presents a compiled interview with three prominent figures in multisensory research: Ulrik Ravnsborg Beierholm, Hans Colonius, and Ladan Shams. Through structured dialogue, the authors reflect on the evolution of computational modeling, from early mathematical psychology to the current dominance of Bayesian causal inference (BCI). The discussion highlights key paradigm shifts, specifically the transition from descriptive studies of illusions to normative, mechanistic explanations of perception. The authors identify the 2002 demonstration by Ernst and Banks of statistically optimal…

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular provocation is one of the main causes of flight illusions, and its occurrence is closely related to the susceptibility of motion sickness (MS). However, existing training programs have limited effect in improving the resistance to motion sickness. In this study, we investigated the effects of hypoxia acclimatization training (HAT) on the resistance to motion sickness.
METHODS: Healthy military college students were identified as subjects according to the criteria. MS model was induced by a rotary chair. Experimental groups included control, HAT, 3D roller training (3DRT)…
