Syndrome of inappropriate anti-diuretic hormone (SIADH) has been reported to be associated with systemic Strongyloides stercoralis. Here, we report a case of a stem cell transplant (SCT) recipient who developed severe SIADH secondary to systemic S Stercoralis. The SIADH resolved quickly after treating the systemic S Stercoralis with ivermectin. A systematic review of the literature was performed by PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane database search. Only eight cases of S Stercoralis in allogeneic SCT recipients have been previously reported. To our knowledge, ours is the first reported case of SIADH

Hyponatremia (serum sodium <135 mEq/L) is a common electrolyte disorder in community or hospitalized patients. Serum sodium levels should be corrected at a proper rate in patients with hyponatremia, since overcorrection of serum sodium levels is related to devastating neurologic consequences, such as the osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS). However, a number of pitfalls, which could lead to undercorrection or overcorrection of hyponatremia, are common during the treatment of hyponatremic patients. Hereby, we describe ten common pitfalls that are observed during the correction of serum sodium

Previously, we reported the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) as an underestimated complication associated with SCT. In the present report, we analyzed detailed data on a larger number of patients with SIADH following SCT and found different SIADH clinical features following cord blood SCT (CBSCT) and BMT/PBSCT. The median onset of SIADH following CBSCT and BMT/PBSCT was 19 and 46 days after SCT, respectively, and the median numbers of WBC at the onset of SIADH were 1.0 and 3.1 x 10(9)/l, respectively. Furthermore, severe symptoms such as seizures, somnolence

UNLABELLED: It is well known that during low diuresis or low effective circulating volume, salt excretion is low. The aim of this study was to find out whether salt excretion, expressed as either urinary sodium concentration (UNa) or fractional sodium excretion (FENa), and the combined use of FENa and fractional urea excretion (FEurea) still differentiate between hyponatremic SIADH and hyponatremic salt depletion (SD) patients when diuresis is low. The relationships between UNa, FENa and diuresis, indirectly estimated by the urinary to plasma creatinine ratio (U/P creat), were studied in 42 hy

The authors report the frequency, characteristic clinical symptoms, laboratory alterations and diagnostic criteria of the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) after subarachnoid haemorrhage. The data on 290 patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) during a period of years at the Division of Neurosurgery, University Medical School, Szeged, are analysed. Twenty-seven (9.3%) patients developed SIADH. Thirteen (4.5%) patients had severe and 14 (4.8%) had mild SIADH. The problems of the treatment are discussed in detail and the different therapeutic methods are li

Studies were carried out to evaluate adaptive responses to water retention in an experimental model of the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis (SIAD). Hyponatraemia was induced by continuous s.c. infusions of the antidiuretic vasopressin analogue 1-deamino-[8-D-arginine]-vasopressin in rats ingesting a 5% (w/v) dextrose solution. After 48 h of sustained decreases in the plasma concentration of Na+ to 23-25% of normal levels, all body fluid compartments were significantly expanded: plasma volume estimated by changes in plasma protein concentration was increased by 26%, extracellular fluid vo

The endocrine status of 106 patients with undifferentiated small cell carcinoma of the lung was evaluated before treatment was begun. Almost one half of the patients had evidence of abnormal control of the secretion of adrenal cortical steroids, manifested by loss of diurnal rhythmicity or dexamethasone suppressibility. Only two had the clinical syndrome of ectopic ACTH secretion. Evidence of inappropriate secretion of vasopressin was found in 38% of the patients, most of whom also had abnormalities of corticosteroid secretory pattern. About one half of the patients had evidence of abnormal gl

A 58-year-old man with bronchogenic oat cell carcinoma developed a typical syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone. The tumor tissue obtained at autopsy had been serially transplanted in nude mice for more than four years with 20 passages. The levels of vasopressin were remarkably increased in the plasma of nude mice bearing this tumor [24.4 +/- 18.3 (S.D.) pg/ml, n = 3] as well as in the tumor tissues ]134.3 +/- 72.2 ng/g, n = 3]. Furthermore, human nicotine-stimulated neurophysin was detected in both plasma and tumor tissues (7.4 +/- 3.7 ng/ml, n = 3, and 2.28 +/- 0.90 mi

We evaluated water metabolism in 11 patients with hypothalamic-pituitary sarcoidosis. Seven patients had abnormal water metabolism: one had partial antidiuretic hormone (ADH) deficiency, one had severe ADH deficiency, one had severe ADH deficiency and deficient thirst, one had only deficient thirst, and three had excessive thirst. In four of the five with thirst disturbances, there was loss of congruence of osmotic thresholds for thirst and ADH release. Five of our patients presented with polyuria and polydipsia, but only two had true diabetes insipidus, whereas three had organic primary polyd

In 1975, during the largest epidemic of St Louis encephalitis (SLE) in the United States, 416 cases were diagnosed in Ohio. Persons who were admitted to two Columbus (Ohio) hospitals with suspected acute viral CNS infection were prospectively studied to define the virologic and clinical aspects of SLE. Sixteen cases of SLE were diagnosed serologically. Fifteen patients had signs of encephalitis and one had aseptic meningitis. Six patients had the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion. Other frequent findings included moderate peripheral leukocytosis and CSF pleocytosis, with

BACKGROUND Corpus callosum agenesis (CCA) is one of the most common congenital brain abnormalities, and is associated with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. In CCA, defects in osmoregulation have been reported. This report presents a rare case of chronic hyponatremia associated with the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis (SIAD) in a woman with CCA. CASE REPORT A 41-year-old woman presented to the renal unit with symptomatic hyponatremia. In her past medical history, she had a four-year history of systemic arterial hypertension and Sjögren's syndrome, and a three-year histo

The purposes of this study were (i) to determine the prevalence of exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) in multi-stage ultra-marathoners and (ii) to gain more insight into fluid and electrolyte regulation during a multi-stage race. Body mass, sodium concentration ([Na⁺]), potassium concentration ([K⁺]), creatinine, urea, specific gravity, and osmolality in urine were measured in 25 male ultra-marathoners in the 'Swiss Jura Marathon' 2008 with 11,000 m gain of altitude over 7 stages covering 350 km, before and after each stage. Haemoglobin, haematocrit, creatinine, urea, [Na⁺], [K⁺], and osmo

1. Evidence from numerous experiments incorporating central blood volume expansion and changes in sodium status supports atrial stretch as the prime determinant of ANF release. 2. Plasma ANF levels are the result of both secretion and clearance of the peptide. Clearance is altered by a number of factors, including changes in posture in normal man and is probably impaired in disease states with diminished renal and hepatic blood flow. 3. In normal subjects an inverse relationship exists between plasma ANF values and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activity. This relationship is lost and re

A radioimmunoassay for AVP capable of measuring human plasma AVP is described. Iodination was performed by the chloramine T method and purified by chromatography on Sephadex G-25. Specific activity of 125I-AVP was 1710 +/- 155 Ci/mmol. Antiserum of high affinity (Keq = 2.7 X 10(11) 1/mol) has been raised in rabbits, which shows slight cross-reactivity with LVP and negligible reactivity with oxytocin. The aqueous assay is capable of detecting 0.4 fmol of AVP/tube and it is highly reproducible. A F lorisil extraction technique is described in detail and gives recovery of 70% of synthetic AVP add

Findley first proposed the presence of age-related dysfunction of the hypothalamic-neurohypophyseal-renal axis more than 60 years ago. More sophisticated studies have since corroborated his findings. As a result, it is now clear that multiple abnormalities in water homeostasis occur commonly with aging, and that the elderly are uniquely susceptible to disorders of body volume and osmolality. This article summarizes the distinct points along the hypothalamic-neurohypophyseal-renal axis where these changes have been characterized, as well as the clinical significance of these changes, with speci
