Ebola virus (EBOV) infections cause haemorrhagic fever, multi-organ failure and death, and survivors can experience neurological sequelae. Licensing of monoclonal antibodies targeting EBOV glycoprotein (EBOV-GP) improved its prognosis, however, this treatment is primarily effective during early stages of disease and its effectiveness in reducing neurological sequela remains unknown. Currently, the need for BSL4 containment hinders research and therapeutic development; development of an accessible BSL-2 in vivo mouse model would facilitate preclinical studies to screen and select therapeutics.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the meaning of sickle cell trait and sickle cell trait screening from the lay perspective of African Americans.
DESIGN AND METHODS: African Americans (N = 300), ages 18-35 and unaware of their sickle cell trait status, completed two open-ended questions from a larger survey. One question asked for their understanding of sickle cell trait; the other asked for their understanding of sickle cell trait screening. Content analysis occurred in two phases: (1) In vivo and holistic coding; and (2) focused coding.

Recent literature has questioned the durability of the Ross AVR in older children and young adults that present predominantly with aortic regurgitation and a dilated aortic root. The effects of a subsaturating, long treatment (24 h) dose of a highly purified cloned subspecies of human leukocyte interferon (IFN-alpha A) on vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) primary macromolecular synthesis in tsG41-infected human amnion U cells were examined. IFN-alpha A, under these conditions, was found to inhibit primary VSV protein synthesis ten-fold while producing no detectable effect on the amount or integrity of primary viral message transcripts. There was no selective reduction by IFN-alpha A of the VSV G or M proteins.
