Growth trend during the first six months of life in male infants with different type of feeding.

AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the differences in the growth trend of male infants fed with human milk (HM), formula feeding (FF) and both (HM+FF), focusing the attention on weight increase in the first six months of life. METHODS: We enrolled 146 healthy male infants born from a spontaneous delivery; exclusion criteria were all conditions that required parenteral nutrition; the follow-up visits were at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 months of life. All infants were subsequently divided into three groups depending on the three feeding type (HM, FF, HM+FF) and then in other three subgroups dependin

Fortification of Breast Milk With Preterm Formula Powder vs Human Milk Fortifier in Preterm Neonates: A Randomized Noninferiority Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Fortification of expressed breast milk (EBM) using commercially available human milk fortifiers (HMF) increases short-term weight and length in preterm very low-birth-weight (VLBW) neonates. However, the high cost and increased risk of feed intolerance limit their widespread use. Preterm formula powder fortification (PTF) might be a better alternative in resource-limited settings. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that fortification of EBM by preterm formula powder is noninferior to fortification by HMF, in terms of short-term weight gain, in VLBW neonates. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPA

Results of an International Survey on Feeding Management in Infants With Short Bowel Syndrome-Associated Intestinal Failure.

OBJECTIVES: Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a complex and rare condition (incidence 1200/100,000 live births) that requires a multidisciplinary team approach to management. In January 2019, the first European Reference Network on Rare and Inherited Congenital Anomalies (ERNICA) Intestinal Failure (IF) workshop was held. Several questions about the strategies used in managing IF associated with SBS were devised. The aim of our study was to collect data on the enteral feeding strategies adopted by the ERNICA centres. METHODS: A questionnaire (36 questions) about strategies used to introduce enter

Bacterial community analysis of infant foods obtained from Chinese markets by combining culture-dependent and high-throughput sequence methods.

In this study, twenty-two baby foods including cereal-based products and powdered infant formula (PIF) obtained from local markets were comprehensively investigated for their bacterial contamination using culture-dependent and high-throughput sequence (HTS) methods. In addition, the genetic diversity and biofilm-forming capacity of the most abundant species were analyzed using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and crystal violet staining assay, respectively. Results showed that 170 mesophilic isolates collected from 22 samples were clustered into 15 genera and 41 species. Bacillus (77.65…

Severe cow's milk induced colitis in an exclusively breast-fed neonate. Case report and clinical review of cow's milk allergy.

Cow's milk induced eosinophilic colitis presenting in the first week of life has been reported, but is very rare. The authors describe a 4-day-old female infant who presented with profuse rectal bleeding resulting in a hematocrit fall from 38% to 30% within 8 hr after hospital admission. Sigmoidoscopy revealed colonic mucosa that was red, edematous, and friable, with punctate hemorrhages. Rectal biopsy showed marked eosinophilic infiltration with multifocal hemorrhage. Further history indicated that while the infant had been exclusively breast-fed since birth, the nursing mother had been drink

The effects of resins added to the milk of children suffering from chronic kidney disease: a clinical relevance to control potassium and phosphate levels?

BACKGROUND: In infants with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the management of nutrition and growth is highly challenging, particularly compared to older children. Management of hyperkalemia and hyperphosphatemia is difficult, and incorporating potassium and phosphate binders directly in formulas could be beneficial, as it avoids direct ingestion of resins by infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a study using Gallia® standard first-stage infant formula and Pregestimil®. We added either carbonate sevelamer (Renvela®, 200, 400 or 800 mg) or polystyrene sulfonate (Resikali®, 2000, 4000 or 8…

Lactose in human milk is associated with lower rates of infection during a drought.

BACKGROUND: Infants given mothers' milk have higher resistance against infections than formula-fed counterparts. This protection is likely multifactorial, with roles for both milk immune factors and nutrients, particularly under elevated nutritional and disease stress. AIM: This study evaluated several milk nutrients/immune factors to assess associations with infant infectious disease during a severe drought. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study analysed morbidity recall data from Kenyan mother-infant dyads surveyed during a historic drought (n 84). Predictors of interest in logistic regression m

Infant gastroesophageal reflux disease management consensus.

AIM: Infant gastroesophageal reflux is mostly benign; however, when associated with complications like failure to thrive, it may be indicative of gastroesophageal reflux disease. There are currently several unmet needs pertaining to the management of infant gastroesophageal reflux (disease). Reflux in infants is mostly composed of breast milk or formula, so this population is significantly different to older children and adults. The objective of this Delphi consensus was to establish recommendations based on published literature and the experience of clinical experts in paediatric gastroentero

Timing of Introduction of Complementary Foods - United States, 2016-2018.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends introducing complementary foods (i.e., any solid or liquid other than breast milk or infant formula) to infants at approximately age 6 months (1). Although a consensus on ideal timing is lacking, most experts agree that introduction of complementary foods before age 4 months is too early because of infant gastrointestinal and motor immaturity (1,2). In addition, early introduction prevents exclusively breastfed infants from reaching the recommended 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding (1) and might be associated with increased risk for overwei…

Evaluating the pathways linking complementary feeding practices to obesity in early life.

The complementary feeding period, when solids and liquids other than breast milk and formula are added to the infant diet, is an important development window shaping infant growth and weight gain, metabolic development, and lifelong eating practices. Yet, relatively little is known about how the timing and types of foods offered to infants at this stage may shape their growth and subsequent risk of developing obesity. This narrative review describes the existing literature on complementary feeding practices, discusses potential biological and behavioral pathways linking complementary feeding p

Anaphylactic reaction to goat's milk in a cow's milk-allergic infant.

Goat's milk has been used as a substitute for cow's milk in cow's milk-allergic individuals. It is currently advocated for this purpose in writings and internet resources directed at the lay person, and infant formula based on goat's milk is available in many countries. Clinically significant cross-allergenicity between cow's and goat's milk has been noted, but a life-threatening cross-reaction has not been reported. We describe a 4-month-old infant with immunologically documented cow's milk protein allergy but no prior exposure to goat's milk who developed anaphylaxis after the ingestion of c…

Massive hepatomegaly, steatosis, and secondary plasma carnitine deficiency in an infant with cystic fibrosis.

Hepatomegaly and steatosis are common findings in children with cystic fibrosis and are most often attributed to malnutrition. An infant fed a carnitine-free soy formula is described. Massive hepatomegaly and steatosis developed in the baby at a time of severe viral respiratory illness, prolonged fasting, hypoglycemia, and hypoketonuria. The infant was found to have secondary plasma carnitine deficiency and excessive loss of carnitine in the urine as part of a more generalized renal tubular dysfunction accompanying vitamin D deficiency and secondary hyperparathyroidism. With correction of the
