A 69-year-old man was found to have leukocytosis and a bleeding tendency, when he underwent surgery for hemorrhoids in November 1992, at the age of 69. The patient was referred to our department for further examination, and was admitted on December 4. On admission, he had hepatomegaly (5 cm) and splenomegaly (12 cm). Studies were undertaken to determine whether treatments with low doses of natural human interferon alpha (HuIFN-alpha) administered by various routes could inhibit the development of the intra-erythrocytic protozoan Babesia microti in BALB/c mice. HuIFN-alpha treatment given intramuscularly significantly inhibited development of the parasitaemia of the parasite compared with infections in control mice.

A total of 49 patients with metastatic renal cell cancer underwent recombinant interferon-alpha 2a therapy combined with chemotherapy. Before therapy the patients without nephrectomy underwent angioinfarction of the primary renal tumor. Legionella pneumonia is an increasingly frequently reported complication in immunocompromised patients, particularly patients with hairy cell leukemia (HCL) in active phase. Recombinant human alpha-interferon is now under intensive investigation as therapy for chronic Type B hepatitis. Recent reports have suggested that prolonged alpha-interferon therapy may induce autoimmune reactions. OBJECTIVES: To describe the postoperative course of patients who underwent hyperthermic isolated limb perfusion with recombinant tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and melphalan after pretreatment with recombinant interferon-gamma as treatment for recurrent melanoma, primary nonresectable soft-tissue tumors, planocellular carcinoma, or metastatic carcinoma.
