Is Internet Addiction Prevalent Among Methadone Maintenance Treatment Patients? Data from Las Vegas and Tel Aviv.

Internet addiction is known to be associated with depression. The Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES-D) for depression were studied among non-selective methadone maintenance treatment patients from the United States (n = 164) and Israel (n = 113). Thirty percent were not exposed to the internet, and 2.9% (n = 8) had an "occasional/frequent problem." The IAT and CES-D scores correlated significantly (p = .03). The non-exposed group was older, less educated, and had more benzodiazepine abusers. Unlike other behavioral addictions that char

Interaction with the game and motivation among players of massively multiplayer online role-playing games.

Knowledge about users interacting with Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPG) is fundamental in order to prevent their potential negative effects on behavior. For this reason, the present study analyzed the relationship between styles of play and motivations. An online questionnaire asking for socio-demographic details, playing style, characteristics of the game played and motivations for playing, was answered by 430 Spanish-speaking MMORPG players (45.1% males). The identified profile for players, far away from the stereotype of an adolescent, consisted in a person who mainl

Structural brain differences associated with extensive massively-multiplayer video gaming.

Video gaming can be associated with inter-individual differences in brain morphology. Much of this literature has focused on non-professional/occasional gamers who barely play, on the one extreme; or Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) cases who typically play more than 5 h/day, on the other extreme. We sought to extend this literature and focus on extensive gamers, who play about 3 h/day, which is typically more than non-professional gamers, but less than IGD cases. Findings regarding this sector of gamers can inform research on risk factors or markers for IGD development, even before addiction sy

Utilizing repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in the management of gambling disorder in Indonesia: protocol for a pilot and feasibility study.

UNLABELLED: Gambling disorder (GD) has emerged as a significant concern in Indonesia, particularly due to the rise in internet-based gambling during the pandemic and the limited availability of treatment options and support services for affected individuals. This issue has had profound impacts on individuals, their families, and society as a whole. Research has demonstrated that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for GD. Additionally, as a relatively novel intervention, several studies have explored the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) i

Changes of quality of life and cognitive function in individuals with Internet gaming disorder: A 6-month follow-up.

Internet gaming disorder (IGD) contributes to poor quality of life (QOL) and cognitive dysfunction and is increasingly recognized as a social problem in various countries. However, no evidence exists to determine whether QOL and cognitive dysfunction stabilize after appropriate management. The present study addressed improvement in QOL and cognitive functioning associated with changes in addiction symptoms following outpatient management for IGD. A total of 84 young males (IGD group: N = 44, mean age: 19.159 ± 5.216 years; healthy control group: N = 40, mean age: 21.375 ± 6.307 years) particip

Mechanisms linking parents' education level to adolescent gaming disorder among Chinese Special School students: serial mediating effects of emotional abuse experience and psychopathy.

BACKGROUND: There is limited research on the predictors of gaming disorder for parents regarding educational background. In particular, research conducted in settings similar to ours has identified gaming disorder as a significant risk factor for behaviors associated with juvenile delinquency. METHODS: This article proposes and tests hypotheses that the father’s and mother’s education levels were related to adolescent gaming disorder in adolescents in Chongqing, China. We used data from a census of Special School students to examine the association between parents’ education and adolescent gam

Problematic internet use and its correlates among resident doctors of a tertiary care hospital of North India: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Problematic Internet use/ Internet addiction (IA) has gained the attention of mental health professionals recently and studies have found that medical professionals are not immune to IA with prevalence rate ranging from 2.8 to 8%. Few studies from India have also reported high rates of IA among medical students. The term 'Problematic internet use' is being increasing used nowadays in place of IA as it signifies a better terminology than the word 'addiction' per se. However, there is lack of information among resident doctors. AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of problematic Internet

Psychometric evaluation of the Perceived Parental Phubbing Scale (PPPS) among Iranian university students: associations with psychosocial factors and group differences.

BACKGROUND: Parental phubbing, the experience of children perceiving parental inattentiveness due to smartphone use, can signal emotional unavailability, perceived rejection, and model maladaptive behaviors. Theoretically, Risky Families Model highlights how emotionally unavailable parenting disrupts children's emotional and social development, PAR theory explains children's psychological responses to perceived parental neglect, and Social Learning Theory describes how children may adopt parents' smartphone habits. Despite these theoretical foundations, most research has been conducted in Chin

Longitudinal relation between childhood maltreatment and problematic internet game use among Chinese early adolescents: The roles of internalizing symptoms and FKBP5 gene variation.

BACKGROUND: Research has demonstrated that childhood maltreatment is a significant predictor of problematic internet game use in adolescents. However, the underlying mechanisms of this relation, particularly the mediating processes and gene-environment interactions (G × E), remain insufficiently understood. This study employed a multi-informant, longitudinal design within a G × E framework to examine the mediating role of internalizing symptoms in the relation between childhood maltreatment and problematic internet game use. Additionally, it investigated whether FKBP5 gene variation moderates

Physical activity, problematic gaming behavior, and quality of life prior and during the first 9 months of the COVID-19 pandemic: Findings from a longitudinal study among university students.

BACKGROUND: Generally, there is limited information on longitudinal trends and the interrelations between physical activity (PA), problematic gaming behavior (PGB), described as a dysfunctional pattern of videogame activities, and quality of life (QoL) based on data that include measurements from both pre- and postpandemic onset. This is also the case for university students. As society faced unprecedented restrictions during this period, these aspects may have developed unfavorably. OBJECTIVE: To examine PA, PGB, and QoL among Norwegian University students prior to and during the initial sta

Brain responses to decision-making in easy and hard choices in internet gaming disorder: Implications for irrepressible gaming behaviours.

BACKGROUND: Impaired decision-making was observed in internet gaming disorder (IGD), however, these studies did not differentiate 'hard' to 'easy' decisions, and only the 'hard' decision-making could reveal the mechanism underlying this issue. METHODS: We recruited forty-eight individuals with IGD and forty-six recreational internet game users (RGUs) as a control group in this study. fMRI data were collected when they were finishing a value-matching delayed discount task (DDT), which included easy and hard decisions judging based on the indifference points of every participant.
