Development and evaluation of iManage: A self-management app co-designed by adolescents with sickle cell disease.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with sickle cell disease (SCD) are a vulnerable population with high risk of morbidity that could be decreased with effective self-management. Previous research suggests that mobile applications (apps) may facilitate AYA engagement in health-promoting behaviors. The objectives of this study were: (i) describe Internet access and use in AYA with SCD; (ii) identify barriers for self-management in this population; (iii) collaborate with AYA to co-design a mobile app that would minimize barriers; and (iv) evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of

Evaluation of patients' experiences with antidepressants reported by means of a medicine reporting system.

OBJECTIVE: To assess experiences related to antidepressant use reported to an internet-based medicine reporting system and to compare the nature of the side effects reported by patients with those reported by health care professionals (HCPs). METHODS: All reports submitted from May 2004 to May 2005 to an internet-based medicine reporting system in The Netherlands related to the use of antidepressants were analysed. Spontaneous reports of adverse drug reactions on antidepressants from HCPs received by The Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb from May 2004 to May 2005 were included for co

Improving adherence to web-based cessation programs: a randomized controlled trial study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Reducing smoking prevalence is a public health priority that can save more lives and money than almost any other known preventive intervention. Internet interventions have the potential for enormous public health impact given their broad reach and effectiveness. However, most users engage only minimally with even the best designed websites, diminishing their impact due to an insufficient 'dose'. Two approaches to improve adherence to Internet cessation programs are integrating smokers into an online social network and providing free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Active partic

Decreased functional connectivity of insula-based network in young adults with internet gaming disorder.

The insula is a region that integrates interoception and drug urges, but little is known about its role in behavioral addiction such as internet addiction. We investigated insula-based functional connectivity in participants with internet gaming disorder (IGD) and healthy controls (HC) using resting-state functional MRI. The right and left insula subregions (posterior, ventroanterior, and dorsoanterior) were used as seed regions in a connectivity analysis. Compared with the HC group, the IGD group showed decreased functional connectivity between left posterior insula and bilateral supplementar

The role of life satisfaction in the association between problematic technology use and anxiety in children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The main aim of this study is to explore problematic technology use among adolescents (Internet, video games, mobiles, and television) and its association with anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, we also analysed the possible moderating role of life satisfaction in this relationship during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain. A cross-sectional survey of 4025 children and adolescents (52% females and 48% males) between 12 and 18 years old was carried out to explore problematic technology use and its correlation with anxiety and life satisfaction after pandemic lockdown. Four multivariate regressions cont

Internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder - a literature review.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a condition in which the key symptoms are obsessive thoughts and motor compulsions. The prevalence of obsessive-compulsive disorder is about 2-3%. The issue of the effectiveness of internet-based therapeutic interventions based on cognitivebehavioral therapy (iCBT) for people suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has not been thoroughly investigated in Poland yet. The aim of this article is to present the results of existing studies on sample iCBT programs for people with OCD and to analyze their effectiveness. In addition to reviewing the co

Network Analysis of Internet Addiction, Online Social Anxiety, Fear of Missing Out, and Interpersonal Sensitivity among Chinese University Students.

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing prevalence of internet usage among young people, the relationships between internet addiction, online social anxiety, fear of missing out (FoMO), and interpersonal sensitivity remain uncertain, intricate, and multifaceted. To gain insight into the underlying psychological mechanisms, we employed network analysis to explore the interconnections between them. This endeavor may provide fresh opportunities for intervention and treatment. METHODS: In this study, 470 participants were assessed at age from 18 to 22 (M = 20.18 years, SD = 1.861) years. Social networks in improvement of health care.

Social network is a social structure made of individuals or organizations associated with one or more types of interdependence (friendship, common interests, work, knowledge, prestige, etc.) which are the "nodes" of the network. Networks can be organized to exchange information, knowledge or financial assistance under the various interest groups in universities, workplaces and associations of citizens. Today the most popular and widely used networks are based on application of the Internet as the main ICT. Depending on the method of connection, their field of activity and expertise of those wh

Internet-based self-help with therapist feedback and in vivo group exposure for social phobia: a randomized controlled trial.

Sixty-four individuals with social phobia (social anxiety disorder) were assigned to a multimodal cognitive-behavioral treatment package or to a waiting list control group. Treatment consisted of a 9-week, Internet-delivered, self-help program that was combined with 2 group exposure sessions in real life and minimal therapist contact via e-mail. Results were analyzed on an intention-to-treat basis, including all randomized participants. From pre- to posttest, treated participants in contrast to controls showed significant improvement on most measured dimensions (social anxiety scales, general

Expanding the reach of alcohol and other drug services: Prevalence and correlates of US adult engagement with online technology to address substance problems.

Online technologies are well integrated into the day-to-day lives of individuals with alcohol and other drug (i.e., substance use) problems. Interventions that leverage online technologies have been shown to enhance outcomes for these individuals. To date, however, little is known about how those with substance use problems naturally engage with such platforms. In addition, the scientific literatures on health behavior change facilitated by technology and harms driven by technology engagement have developed largely independent of one another. In this secondary analysis of the National Recovery

Health Information-Seeking Patterns of the General Public and Indications for Disease Surveillance: Register-Based Study Using Lyme Disease.

BACKGROUND: People using the Internet to find information on health issues, such as specific diseases, usually start their search from a general search engine, for example, Google. Internet searches such as these may yield results and data of questionable quality and reliability. Health Library is a free-of-charge medical portal on the Internet providing medical information for the general public. Physician's Databases, an Internet evidence-based medicine source, provides medical information for health care professionals (HCPs) to support their clinical practice. Both databases are available t

Cognitively engaging sedentary activities are associated with better cognitive function in middle-aged adults: a cross-sectional study using the 1970 British Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Prior research examining sedentary time and cognitive function has produced mixed findings with limited attention to specific types of sedentary behavior. This cross-sectional study tested the hypothesis that more cognitively active sedentary behaviors (playing video games, internet use, and reading) are positively associated with cognitive performance, in contrast to cognitively passive sedentary behavior (watching television). METHODS: Data from 3,943 participants (aged 46-48; 53.3% female) with valid activPAL3 accelerometry, self-reported time spent doing sedentary behaviors, c…

The impact of telemonitoring on adherence to nasal corticosteroid treatment in children with seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to controller therapy in allergic diseases is low. Telemonitoring has been proposed to improve adherence to treatment in chronic diseases. However, this strategy has never been tested in allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. OBJECTIVE: To test whether Internet-based telemonitoring during the grass-pollen season of children with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis may enhance adherence to treatment. METHODS: Children and adolescents, 5-18 years old, with moderate-to-severe seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis to grass pollen requiring daily administration of nasal corticosteroid (NCS)

Online Education Is Non-Inferior to Group Education for Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Randomized Trial and Patient Preference Trial.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Structured education can reduce symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but the availability of such interventions is limited and online formats could facilitate their dissemination. We compared the effectiveness of Internet-delivered vs face-to-face education in patients with IBS, hypothesizing that the online format would not be inferior. METHODS: We conducted 2 trials of Internet-delivered vs face-to-face group education (3 weeks) at a gastroenterology outpatient clinic in Sweden. In the first trial, 141 patients with IBS were assigned randomly (1:1) to
