Evidence of complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) across populations with prolonged trauma of varying interpersonal intensity and ages of exposure.

The ICD-11 proposes different types of prolonged trauma as risk factors for complex PTSD (CPTSD). However, CPTSD's construct validity has only been examined in childhood abuse, and single trauma exposure samples. Thus, the extent to which CPTSD applies to other repeatedly traumatized populations is unknown. This study examined ICD-11's PTSD and CPTSD across populations with prolonged trauma of varying interpersonal intensity and ages of exposure, including: 1) childhood sexual abuse, 2) adulthood trauma of severe interpersonal intensity (refugees and ex-prisoners of war), and 3) adulthood trau

CD38 genetic variation is associated with increased personal distress to an emotional stimulus.

Genetic variation in CD38-a putative oxytocin pathway gene-has been linked to higher oxytocin levels, empathy, and sensitive parenting, but also to more negative interpersonal outcomes (e.g., alienation from friends and family, poorer romantic relationship quality). To reconcile these seemingly contradictory findings, we drew upon the idea that CD38 variation may heighten social-emotional sensitivity and, consequently, make individuals prone to negative emotions in distressing interpersonal situations. To test this hypothesis, we performed a secondary analysis of a dataset including participan

Characterizing multidimensional facial synchrony for relationship quality detection.

Relationship quality is typically assessed using self-report questionnaires, which are time-consuming and may not fully capture interpersonal processes during interaction. Automated facial expression analysis provides an opportunity to study nonverbal behavior during naturalistic interactions in a more objective and continuous manner. We characterize dyadic facial synchrony from video-based facial action unit time series and examine its association with marital relationship quality. Specifically, dyadic coordination is quantified using zero-lag cross-correlations between partners' facial behav

Turning the envious boss into a friend or a foe: The emotional and behavioral reactions to being envied by one's supervisor and its impact on leader-member exchange.

In recent years, research on workplace envy has expanded beyond its traditional focus on peer-to-peer envy to examine the envy felt by supervisors toward their subordinates (termed as "downward envy"). We contribute to this emerging research stream by examining the emotional and behavioral reactions of employees who are targets of such downward envy, as well as the relational consequences that follow. We tested our model, which is based on the appraisal theory of emotions, across two studies-a multisource, multiphase field study and a vignette-based experimental study-that offer converging evi

Hopelessness Appraisals of Stressors and Suicidal Ideation: The Moderating Role of Girls' Expressed Vulnerability to a Close Friend Following Stressor Exposure.

Rates of suicidal ideation and exposure to stressors both increase dramatically for girls during adolescence. As stress increases, girls’ friendships become important outlets for coping with stress. The current study used a multimethod approach to examine the combined influence of stressor-related cognitions (i.e., hopelessness appraisals of personal stressors) and observationally coded behaviors during girls’ interactions with a close friend as predictors of short-term risk for suicidal ideation. The sample comprised 231 youth assigned female at birth (Mage=14.70, SD = 1.36), who completed a

Conversations about boring topics are more interesting than we think.

Conversations enhance social connection and well-being, but the kinds of conversations that come to mind when thinking of these benefits are ones about interesting topics. Everyday life, however, does not spare people from conversations about boring topics. We examine the extent to which people's expectations of conversations about boring topics are calibrated with their actual experiences. Nine preregistered experiments (five in the main text, four in the Supplemental Material; total N = 1,800) reveal that participants consistently underestimated how enjoyable and interesting conversations ab

Parental Separation and Children's Peer Relations: Investigating Friendship Integration and Peer Rejection in Middle Childhood and Early Adolescence.

Parental separation raises children's peer rejection but not friendship integration. Peer rejection increases after separation and remains high for up to four years. No moderating effects were found for the child's age, the child's gender, or parental education. Separation impairs peer relations primarily by heightening children's socioemotional difficulties.

[Quality of relationships among the oldest old in Germany-an examination of the association with depressive symptoms and loneliness].

BACKGROUND: To date, there is restricted knowledge with regard to the association of relationship quality with family and friends and depressive symptoms and loneliness among the oldest old. Thus, we aimed to address this knowledge gap. METHODS: Data were taken from wave 8 of the German Ageing Survey (December 2022 to June 2023), a nationally representative sample of community-dwelling individuals in their second half of life. We restricted our analytical sample (n = 810 respondents) to individuals aged 80 years and over (i.e., oldest old). Loneliness was measured using the De Jong Gierveld t

Evolution of networks in virtual reality: A scalable framework for studying social dynamics of small groups.

Immersive technologies provide new possibilities to study social dynamics. In this paper, we develop a methodological framework for identifying and describing the evolution of group networks in virtual reality (VR). Leveraging longitudinal data on participants' interpersonal distances obtained in a collaborative virtual environment during a university course about VR we demonstrate how network methods can be applied and used to test propositions of social capital theory. Specifically, we use stochastic actor-oriented models (SAOMs) to explore the formation and change of social ties over time.

Sexual relationships matter more to men than to women.

The authors argue that romantic relationships matter more to men than to women. They attribute this sex difference to men's greater dependence on their relationships for emotional intimacy and support. Although we resonate with their hypothesis and recognize the veracity of the evidence presented, we suggest that their model understates the role of sex differences in sexual motivation.

Rhythmic Structure Shapes Dyadic Self-Other Representations Through Interpersonal Action Coupling.

Moving in unison to a musical beat can blur boundaries between individual movements, fostering prosociality. However, structured patterns of sounds and silences in rhythms (meter) allow various ways of moving to the beat. How do these different rhythmic interpretations affect social connectedness? Unacquainted dyads drummed in unison, and at more complex integer multiple and polyrhythmic ratios. Coordination requires continuously tracking who does what and when. We varied trackability by manipulating task-sharing (the same or separate drum pads, and audible or inaudible partner drumming). More

My name is, who? On being misnamed by a relative or a romantic partner.

The present survey investigated how people felt (i.e., irritated, sad or amused) when a relative or a romantic partner called them by someone else's first name. It also explored links between these reactions, self-esteem, the own name's symbolic value and one's own propensity to misnaming others. Participants reported more misnaming incidents committed by a relative than by a partner. Moreover, they were significantly more irritated when a partner misnamed them than when a relative did so. Globally, naming incidents did not trigger very strong negative feelings but participants reported correc

Attachment bonds: a foundation for understanding social relationships.

Thomas proposes that infants classify social relationships using the categories of Relational Models Theory. Attachment theory and research describe an innate, early-emerging suite of psychological processes by which infants identify and bond selectively to caregivers. Classification of others' relationships might build upon these same mechanisms, with implications for future research on social cognition across development.

The cultural plasticity of intimacy behavior: A socioecological attachment perspective.

Gender imbalances in intimacy behavior reflect culturally contingent expressions of attachment organization rather than fixed gender differences. Building on Wahring et al.'s model, we apply the Biobehavioral Cultural Model of Attachment to show how affiliative behaviors vary with socioecological conditions, early reinforcement patterns, and cultural norms, offering a dynamic, context-sensitive account of intimacy across diverse settings.

Behaviour Change Techniques and Mechanisms of Action: Identification of the Active Ingredients in Communication Partner Training for People With Acquired Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-communication disorders (CCD) are common after acquired brain injury (ABI) and can have a negative impact on a person's life. Training a communication partner can improve the communication skills of the person with ABI; however, families are dissatisfied with existing communication partner training (CPT) and support. There is emerging evidence for the effectiveness of training for communication partners (CPs), though there is variability in the content, dosage and delivery of training; and published programmes are rarely used by speech and language therapists in practice.

Exposure Begins at Hello: A Case Study of Complex Relational Healing.

Interpersonal trauma can be disruptive at any point in the lifespan; however, it carries a unique consequence profile when repetitive betrayals and abuse are present in early childhood. In the case of Ruby, she developed various parts to manage her distress, some of whom focused on engaging in risky or other destructive behavior without the knowledge of the rest of the system, as well as significant substance use to mediate her pain. This case study focuses on what has worked over the course of her 15-year treatment history with this author. Although she was not in therapy for that entire time

Building Relationships and Families Among PLHIV in Low-and Middle-Income Countries: Overcoming Stigma and Leveraging Recent Advances.

People living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV) face significant challenges, particularly stigma, which impacts their ability to build and maintain family or seek relationships. This is especially prevalent in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs), where awareness is limited. Stigma leads to societal rejection, internalized shame, and emotional distress, affecting both single and married PLHIV. Singles experience rejection, loneliness, and fear of disclosure, while sero-discordant couples face transmission fears, conception issues, and emotional strain. Even sero-concordant couples,

A Case Study of Comprehensive Postoperative Management for Elderly Total Hip Arthroplasty Patients Based on Peplau's Interpersonal Relationship Theory.

With a growing population of elderly patients undergoing hip arthroplasty, traditional nursing care often faces challenges dus to fragmented services and inadequate continuity. Based on Peplau's interpersonal relationship theory, we explored a comprehensive hospital-home-community management model for an 80-year-old female patient following total hip arthroplasty. This nursing model was structured into four sequential phases (orientation, identification, exploitation, and resolution) and incorporated a structured multidisciplinary team, a stepwise health education system, discharge preparation…

We All Need at Least One Friend Who Understands What We Do Not Say: A Scoping Review of Friendship and Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this scoping review was to understand what is known about the friendships of individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. Because communication is important to friendship, severe communication impairment may impact the establishment or maintenance of friendships in unique and important ways. METHOD: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines for scoping reviews and Covidence software using an established set of operationally defined inclusion criteria supported the identification of the 46 papers inclu

What Are My Friends Really Like? How We Change Our Perceptions of Familiar Others' Traits and Actions.

In everyday life, our perceptions of others' traits are influenced by a combination of their actions and our relationship with them. We enrolled 142 participants in a virtual escape room to examine (a) whether an unfamiliar task changed perceptions of friends' traits, (b) which types of prior relationships influenced trait perceptions, and (c) the relative importance of perceptions of actions in assessing traits. Higher pregame similarity ratings led to increases in perceptions of competence, while higher pregame liking ratings led to increases in perceptions of sociability. In addition, objec
