Immunoepidemiology of intestinal helminthic infections. 1. The global burden of intestinal nematode disease.

Estimates of the world-wide prevalence of intestinal nematode infections indicate that there are more than 1000 million people infected, and several million cases of clinical helminthiases. Recent studies suggest that the morbidity has been underestimated and that moderate intensities of infection may have important developmental consequences, particularly for children of school age.

Improving access to intestinal stem cells as a step toward intestinal gene transfer.

In previous studies exploring the intestinal epithelium as a potential site for somatic gene therapy, we concluded that the mucus lining the intestine constitutes a significant barrier to any attempts at gene transfer via the lumenal route. The mucus problem is aggravated by the fact that the epithelial stem cells, which are the logical target for gene transfer, are located deep in the intestinal crypts. The goals of the current study were to develop procedures that would improve accessibility to the intestinal stem cells and which would effect in vivo mucus removal without damaging the underl

Changes in fatty acid desaturation in hepatic and intestinal tissues induced by intestinal resection.

We have studied the activities of delta 9, delta 6 and delta 5 desaturases in rat liver and jejunum when the entero-hepatic circulation was interrupted by either 50 or 75% intestinal resection. Desaturase activities in caecal mucosa were also determined in control and operated rats. Distal small bowel resection significantly altered the activities of desaturase enzymes in liver, jejunum and caecum. Thus, the delta 9 desaturase activity was lower in hepatic microsomes from operated animals, and this decrease was not related to the extent by which the intestine was removed. However, a significan

The value of double-contrast study of the small intestine in immunoproliferative small intestinal disease.

Radiological findings of 2 patients with immunoproliferative small intestinal disease were studied. One of the cases was associated with alpha-chain disease. Both patients complained of severe diarrhea, and diagnosis was made by endoscopic biopsy of the duodenum and jejunum. Double-contrast studies of the small intestine and hypotonic duodenographies in these patients revealed thickened folds and innumerable fine granular elevations without ulcerations or luminal narrowings. Double-contrast studies are one of the most important examinations in the diagnosis of this disorder.

[Intestinal occlusion caused by ileo-colic invagination in a patient with intestinal metastasis of melanoma].

An unusual case of intestinal obstruction due to ileal metastatic melanoma is reported. An ileocolic intussusception led to intestinal obstruction. The patient underwent palliative surgery to re-establish intestinal continuity.

Hypogenesis of intestinal ganglion cells: a rare cause of intestinal obstruction simulating aganglionosis.

Hypogenesis of intestinal ganglion cells is a rare cause of functional intestinal obstruction showing both diminished numbers of ganglion cells per plexus and immature ganglion cells. We report a case of hypogenesis extending from anus to mid small intestine.

Ontogenic development of vasoactive intestinal peptide receptors in rat intestinal cells and liver.

Changes in the functional and biochemical characteristics of membrane receptors for vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) were evaluated in vitro, using epithelial intestinal cells isolated during rat development, from day 17 of gestation to adulthood. These characteristics included cell cAMP generation, adenylate cyclase and cAMP-dependent phosphodiesterase cAMP-PDE activities, [125I]VIP-binding capacity, and the molecular components of [125I]VIP-binding sites. In 19-day-old fetuses, VIP induced a significant and persistent increase in cAMP production, which lasted for 10 min in intestinal cell

[Diffuse intestinal polyangiomatosis as a cause of recurrent intestinal hemorrhage. Report of an unusual case].

We observed a 38-year-old Italian male with recurrent intestinal bleeding and consecutive iron-deficient anemia. For search of the source of bleeding intensive clinical, endoscopic and radiological investigations had been performed. Multiple malformations of superior mesenteric artery with abnormal vascularisation of jejunum and ileum were established angiographically. In addition the lumen of small bowel loops was dilated and enlarged mucosa folds were found. Because of a prominent vascularized area in the cecum a resection of the right hemicolon had been performed with consecutive death of t

[Lysozyme concentrations in the intestinal mucosa in malabsorption syndromes and chronic inflammatory intestinal diseases].

Lysozyme levels were determined in the mucosa of gut in 80 children with chronic inflammatory bowel disease, malabsorption and acrodermatitis enteropathica.l Levels of lysozyme in the mucosa of colon were found to be significantly higher in cases with chronic inflammatory bowel disease, whereas in children with malabsorption (celiac disease) concentration of lysozyme in the mucosa of small intestine were significantly lower compared to a control group. In a 4 months old boy with acrodermatitis enteropathica there was a low level of lysozyme in the mucosa of the small intestine. After therapy w

Studies of the large intestine of sheep. 1. Fermentation and absorption in sections of the large intestine.

1. Fermentation and absorption of constituents of digesta in segments of the large intestine of sheep given different diets were studied by analysis of gut contents obtained at slaughter after a period during which the sheep had been administered a non-absorbable gut marker. 2. In sheep given chopped, dried lucerne (Medicago sativa) there was net absorption of water throughout the large intestine with concomitant increases in the proportion of dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM). There was net disappearance of 62 g OM, 1.66 g non-urea non-ammonia-nitrogen (NU-NAN) and 0.6 g (urea + NH3(-N

[Prediction of drug intestinal absorption and drug-induced intestinal toxicity with the use of human crypt-derived intestinal stem cells and their differentiated cells].

For the development of orally-administered drugs, quantitative prediction of drug intestinal absorption and drug-induced intestinal toxicity is one of the essential evaluation items. However, the current experimental systems have some critical problems such as large inter-species difference in animal studies and different gene expression levels between Caco-2 cells and human intact intestinal tissue. Thus, the construction of novel experimental systems which can reflect human intestinal physiology has been desired. We established stable 3D culture of intestinal stem cells in Matrigel originall
