Heterocyclic fluorescent Schiff base chemosensors for the detection of Fe(III) and Cu(II) ions.

Two new Schiff bases were synthesized from 1-(2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)ethanone and pyridine derivatives. Both compounds were characterized using infrared, UV-Vis., 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectral studies. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed for both the Schiff bases with 6-31G(d, p) as the basis set. Vibrational frequencies calculated using the theoretical method were in good agreement with the experimental values. Both the Schiff bases were highly fluorescent in nature. The cation-recognizing profile of the compounds was investigated in aqueous methanol medium. The Schif…

Sulfate ions diffusion in concrete under coupled effect of compression load and dry-wet circulation.

The diffusion of Sulfate ions in concrete is a complex process and affects the performance of concrete. Experiments on the time-dependent distribution of sulfate ions in concrete under the coupling of pressure load, dry-wet circulation, and sulfate attack, and the diffusion coefficient of sulfate ions with various parameters was tested. The applicability of the cellular automata (CA) theory to simulate the diffusion of sulfate ions was discussed. In this paper, a multiparameter cellular automata (MPCA) model was developed to simulate the impacts of load, immersion ways, and sulfate solution co…

Influence of Fiber Orientation on the Water and Ions Transportation of Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC).

An engineered cementitious composite (ECC) belongs to a type of high-performance fiber-reinforced materials. Fiber alignment causes the anis … igration. The fiber orientation also influences the compressive strength gain under immersion conditions (Na2SO4 solution, Na2SO4 + NaCl solution, and water). Compared with the AH and R specimens, the AV specimens are more sensitive to the immersion condition. In contrast, the fiber orientation has no significant effect on ECC specimens under freeze-th …

Metagenomics insight into the long-term effect of ferrous ions on the mainstream anammox system.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria have a high requirement for iron for their growth and metabolism. However, it remains unclea … e to iron supplementation at 25 °C compared to 35 °C, which may be due to the oxidative stress reactions induced by combined lowered temperature and a high Fe2+ dosage. Overall, these findings offer a deeper understanding of the effect of iron in mainstream anammox systems, which can contribute to improved stability maintenance and effectiveness of ana …

Enrichment and immobilization of heavy metal ions from wastewater by nanocellulose/carbon dots-derived composite.

Heavy metal ions (HMIs) have been widely applied in various industries because of their excellent physicochemical properties. However, their discharging without appropriate treatment brought about serious pollution problems. So it is desirable but challenging to rapidly and completely clean up these toxic pollutants from water, especially utilizing environmentally friendly and naturally rich biomass materials. In this work, we prepared nanocellulose/carbon dots/magnesium hydroxide (CCMg) ternary composite using cotton via a simple hydrothermal method. The removal mechanism towards Cd2+ and Cu2…

Multifunctional light-controllable nanozyme enabled bimodal fluorometric/colorimetric sensing of mercury ions at ambient pH.

Nanomaterials with enzyme-like catalytic features (nanozymes) find wide use in analytical sensing. Apart from catalytic characteristics, some other interesting functions coexist in the materials. How to combine these properties to design multifunctional nanozymes for new sensing strategy development is challenging. Besides, in nanozymes it is still a challenge to conveniently control the catalytic process, which also hinders their further applications in advanced biochemical analysis. To remove the above barriers, here we design a light-controllable multifunctional nanozyme, namely manganese-i…

Unpredictable Electrochemical Processes in Ti Dental Implants: The Role of Ti Ions and Inflammatory Products.

Peri-implantitis is a substantially prevailing condition. A potential risk factor for peri-implantitis is Ti implant corrosion. During inflammation, substantial quantities of reactive oxygen species (ROS) secretion and local acidification occur. Little is known about the interaction between the inflammatory and corrosion products on Ti surface corrosion. Therefore, the objective of the current study was to evaluate the synergistic effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), lactic acid, and Ti ions on Ti corrosion. Twenty-seven commercially pure Ti samples were polished (Ra ≈ 45 nm) and divided into 9…

Magnetic separation-enhanced photoluminescence detection of dipicolinic acid and quenching detection of Cu(II) ions.

Dipicolinic acid (DPA) is a chelate capable of binding to a variety of lanthanide ions to make them luminescent in the visible range. Based on this property and also assisted by magnetic separation, we report a strategy for the sensitive detection of DPA. Poly(acrylic acid)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) serve as a magnetic carrier to deliver only a necessary amount of Tb3+ ions to DPA in a sample solution. This enables photoluminescence measurement of the Tb3+-DPA complex with minimal background noise. The obtained detection limit, which is as low as 0.236 nM, is more than two orders…

Rapid fluorescent color analysis of copper ions on a smart phone via ratiometric fluorescence sensor.

A smartphone-assisted fluorescence color sensing system for rapid, convenient, and on-site detection of copper ions was developed. The ratiometric fluorescence sensor was fabricated by using silica-coated blue-light-emitting carbon dots and surface-grafted red-light-emitting cadmium-telluride quantum dots. After exposure to Cu2+ in 20 s, the red fluorescence was quenched obviously, while the blue fluorescence remained unchanged, and the sensor color changes continuously from red to blue under the ultraviolet lamp. The concentration (50-1200 nM) of copper ions could be measured by the fluoresce…

Click chemistry inspired synthesis of andrographolide triazolyl conjugates for effective fluorescent sensing of ferric ions.

The naturally occurring compound andrographolide 1 was used as a substrate for the synthesis of a novel terminal alkyne 3 which on copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction with azides 4a-l, 7 and 9 furnished a series of regioselective andrographolide triazolyl conjugates 5a-l, 8 and 10, respectively. A free glycoconjugate 6 was also prepared by selective deprotection of compound 5i in good yield. All the compounds were characterized by absorbance, FT-IR, NMR, and HR-MS analyses. The triazolyl conjugate 8 was further investigated as a probe for selective detection of Fe3+

Effect of copper nanoparticles and copper ions on the architecture of rainbow trout olfactory mucosa.

Olfactory epithelial cells are in direct contact with myriad environmental contaminants which may consequently disrupt their structure and function. Copper ions (Cu2+) and copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) are two types of olfactory neurotoxicants. However, their effects on the structure of olfactory epithelium are largely uninvestigated. The density of olfactory goblet cells in CuNP- and Cu2+ - exposed rainbow trout was assessed using light microscopy throughout time. In both copper (Cu) treatments, the number of goblet cells increased initially over the 24 h exposure and then recovered to normal …

Experimental and computational evidence for C=O π-bonding in [CH2OH]+ and related oxonium ions.

The question of whether [CH2OH]+ should be described as the hydroxymethyl cation, +CH2OH, or protonated formaldehyde, CH2=OH+, is reconsidered in the light of experimental information and new computational evidence. Previous arguments that the charge distribution in [CH2OH]+ may be probed by considering the incremental stabilisation of [CH2OH]+ induced by homologation on carbon (to give [CH3CHOH]+) or oxygen (to produce [CH2OCH3]+) are critically examined. Cation stabilisation energies are shown to be better indicators of the nature of these oxonium ions. Further insight into the structure of …

Enhanced Sulfate Production by Nitrate Photolysis in the Presence of Halide Ions in Atmospheric Particles.

Heterogeneous oxidation of SO2 is an effective production pathway of sulfate in the atmosphere. We recently reported a novel pathway for the heterogeneous oxidation of SO2 by in-particle oxidants (OH, NO2, and NO2-/HNO2) produced from particulate nitrate photolysis (Environ. Sci. Technol. 2019, 53, 8757-8766). Particulate nitrate is often found to coexist with chloride and other halide ions, especially in aged sea-salt aerosols and combustion aerosols. Reactive uptake experiments of SO2 with UV-irradiated nitrate particles showed that sulfate production rates were enhanced by a factor of 1.4, …

Activation of porous magnetized biochar by artificial humic acid for effective removal of lead ions.

In this paper, we have successfully prepared porous magnetic biochar with excellent surface area and recovery rate using corn stalks (CS) and waste iron (WI) as precursors. Notably, in order to prevent the incorporated iron oxides from blocking the carbon pores, then resulting in a decrease in specific surface area and reducing the removal efficiency of the material, the optimum range of iron ions can be determined to be 0.04-0.06 mol/L according to the effect of the amount of iron on the magnetic biochar recovery rate and Pb2+ removal capacity. Furthermore, as-synthesized artificial humic aci…

Emissive carbon dots derived from natural liquid fuels and its biological sensing for copper ions.

Liquid fuels rich in aliphatic and aromatic carbon compounds are utilized as the carbon precursors for the production of carbon dots (CDs) for the first time. Herein we demonstrate the preparation of liquid fuels derived CDs (d-CDs and f-CDs) via chemical oxidation approach and the subsequent application for cerebral copper ions (Cu2+) sensing in rat brain microdialysate. The as-prepared CDs exhibits different morphology and photoluminescence properties depending on the different component of precursors. The luminescence of the as-prepared d-CDs can be significantly quenched upon addition of C…

Aminoantipyrine based efficient chemosensor for Zn(II) ions and its effectiveness in live cell imaging.

A simple imine based receptor NA-1 has been synthesized for detection of Zinc ions. Probe NA-1 showed the selective colorimetric changes with Zinc (II) ions whereas other metal ions didn't showed any observable colorimetric changes. The probe showed the very selective turn-on fluorescence response with Zn(II) ions among other rival metal ions like Cd(II) and Hg(II). The mode of binding was studied by 1H-nmr titrations and fluorescence spectroscopy. Jobs plot analysis confirming that the probe NA-1 forms 1:1 complex with Zn(II). The observed fluorescence and absorption change further supported …

A novel peptide-based fluorescent chemosensor for Cd(II) ions and its applications in bioimaging.

Nowadays, it is of great significance to develop a novel fluorescent chemosensor for Cd(II) ions detection with cost-effective, rapid, facile and applicable to environment and biological milieus. Herein, we report a new peptide-based fluorescent chemosensor DSC (Dan-Ser-Cys-NH2) based on dipeptide (Ser-Cys-NH2) conjugated with dansyl group, which was synthesized using solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) technology. As designed, DSC exhibited fluorescent "turn-on" response for Cd2+ in 100% aqueous solution over a wide range of pH values based on photoinduced electron transfer (PET). The stoich…

Chitosan‑g‑maleic acid for effective removal of copper and nickel ions from their solutions.

Pollution of the environment associated with discharging the toxic heavy metals in water makes us focus the light to solve this problem. In continuation of our efforts, we aim in this work to utilize the graft copolymer (chitosan‑g‑maleic acid) to purify water from copper and nickel ions. The graft copolymer has been synthesized using gamma radiation and the grafting conditions have been optimized by studying the influence of acetic acid concentration (0.5-10% V/V), monomer concentration (5-17.5% w/v), chitosan concentration (0.25-2.5% w/v) and absorbed dose (0.5-5 kGy). FT-IR and TGA have bee…

Development of a new adsorbent from pumpkin husk by KOH-modification to remove copper ions.

Heavy metal pollution in watercourses is a major environmental problem throughout the world due to rapid population growth, industrialization, and economic development. Considering this, the present study aimed to develop a new adsorbent from pumpkin husk (PH) by KOH modification to remove copper (Cu2+) ions and to explore its adsorptive potential. The sorption studies of Cu2+ on KOH-modified PH were carried out as functions of particle size, solution pH, adsorbent dose, temperature, initial metal concentration, and contact time. The sorption capacity of KOH-modified PH was found to be higher …
