Background: Geographic peripherality in Israel is linked to poorer health outcomes and may disproportionately affect patients requiring chronic therapies such as hemodialysis (HD). Though malnutrition and inflammation are strong predictors of morbidity and mortality in HD patients, regional differences in nutritional status and dietary adherence are unclear. Objectives: To examine the association between peripherality and malnutrition risk, dietary intake, and adherence to nutrition guidelines among Jewish Israeli adults on HD. Methods: In this multi-center, cross-sectional study, 154 adult Je

Approximately 1% of the Ashkenazi Jewish population carries the BRCA2 6174delT (c.5946del) pathogenic variant. It is important to have accurate knowledge of the risks of breast and ovarian cancer associated with this specific variant so that women may be counseled accordingly. In this prospective study, we estimated the risks of breast and ovarian cancer associated with the 6174delT variant compared with the risks for other pathogenic variants in the BRCA2 gene. The annual risk for developing breast cancer was significantly lower in 246 women who carried the 6174delT variant compared with 721

Warsaw breakage syndrome (WABS), caused by bi-allelic variants in the DDX11 gene, is a rare cohesinopathy characterized by pre- and postnatal growth retardation, microcephaly, intellectual disability, facial dysmorphia, and sensorineural hearing loss due to cochlear hypoplasia. The DDX11 gene codes for an iron-sulfur DNA helicase in the Superfamily 2 helicases and plays an important role in genomic stability and maintenance. Fourteen individuals with WABS have been previously reported in the medical literature. Affected individuals have been of various ethnic backgrounds with different pathoge

BACKGROUND: Determining the background incidence of intussusception is important in countries implementing rotavirus immunization. Rotavirus immunization was introduced into the routine infant immunization program in Israel during late 2010. Incidence and risk factors for intussusception were examined in children aged less than five years between 1992 and 2009.
METHODS: Data were collected from medical records of children hospitalized due to intussusception (N = 190), and from control children (N = 295), at Carmel and Hillel Yaffe hospitals in northern Israel.
RESULTS: The average annual inc

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine analytic performance of laboratories offering molecular testing for conditions such as Tay-Sachs disease, Canavan disease, and familial dysautonomia, which are prevalent in the Ashkenazi Jewish population.
METHODS: The College of American Pathologists and the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics cosponsor molecular proficiency testing for these disorders. Responses from 2006 to 2013 were analyzed for accuracy (genotyping and interpretations).
RESULTS: Between 11 and 36 laboratories participated in each Tay-Sachs disease distrib

Jellinek is a kind of archetypal character for future generations in the field of addiction studies. His implosion in the arena of alcoholism around the age of 50 was an unexpected challenge to medical science. We know very little about his own role models giving an intellectual and moral compass to his pragmatic creativity. More than 30 years has passed since Jellinek's death when an American sociologist Ron Roizen started unearthing his silent story. Roizen discerned that there are a lot of unsaid and muted issues in his personal Hungarian past. Our paper, based on the authors' research in H

BACKGROUND: Germline mutations in the BRCA2 cancer susceptibility gene are associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer (PC). Breast-pancreas cancer families with BRCA1 mutations have also been observed. The influence of a family history (FH) of PC on BRCA mutation prevalence in patients with breast cancer (BC) is unknown.
METHODS: A clinical database review (2000-2009) identified 211 Ashkenazi Jewish (AJ) BC probands who 1) underwent BRCA1/2 mutation analysis by full gene sequencing or directed testing for Ashkenazi founder mutations (BRCA1: 185delAG and 5382insC; BRCA2: 6174delT)

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Religiosity may be a relevant protective factor for periodontitis, as it is for other chronic systemic diseases. The objective of the present study was to assess the relationship between periodontitis and religiosity, and whether oral health-related behaviours, spirituality and social support are included in the potential pathways that explain the association between religiosity and periodontitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cross-sectional data were part of a retrospective study. The stratified random-sampling technique was limited to the Jerusalem Jewish population. Conc

BACKGROUND: Most cases of early-onset primary torsion dystonia (PTD) are caused by the same three-base pair (bp) (GAG) deletion in the DYT1 gene. Exon rearrangements are a common mutation type in other genes and have not yet been tested for in DYT1. Several lines of evidence suggest a relationship of the DYT1 gene with Parkinson disease (PD).
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the frequency and type of DYT1 mutations and explore the associated phenotypes in a mixed movement disorders patient cohort and in controls.
METHODS: The authors screened 197 patients with dystonia (generalized: n = 5; focal/se

Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) are associated with susceptibility to different immune and nonimmune mediated diseases. We had reported that the drug adverse reaction, clozapine-induced agranulocytosis (CA), is associated with different HLA types and HSP70 variants in Ashkenazi Jewish and non-Jewish patients, suggesting that a gene within the MHC region is associated with CA. This study was designed to find common genetic markers for this disorder in both ethnic groups. The tumor necrosis factor (TNF) microsatellites d3 and b4 were found in higher frequencies in both Jewish

OBJECTIVE: The authors documented the frequency of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in civilian victims of urban terrorism.
METHOD: A recent shooting attack on a van of Hasidic students provided a unique opportunity to document responses of survivors in this targeted group. Eleven of 14 survivors were compared with age-matched subjects on a variety of questionnaires and clinical evaluations.
RESULTS: Of the 11 survivors, four were diagnosed with PTSD (all of whom also had concurrent major depressive disorder), one with major depressive disorder, and two with adjustment disorder.

HLA class II was investigated in eight Jewish narcoleptic patients, representing the total of such patients known in Israel at present, and in three patients suffering from sleep disturbances other than narcolepsy. All (11 out of 11) patients carried the serologic specificities DR2, DQ6 (DQ1). At the DNA level, all narcoleptics were found to be DRB1*1501, DQA1*0102, DQB1*0602 which indicates that the susceptibility gene may be located within the HLA class II region, DR, and/or DQ. As for the nonnarcoleptic patients with idiopathic hypersomnia, they carried different alleles of DR2 and DQ6, nam

OBJECTIVE: Invasive cervical squamous cell carcinoma is not a common disease among Jewish women. In the present study an attempt was made to find what is the distribution of the known risk factors in this population.
METHODS: Three hundred and ninety-one patients with various cervical cytological abnormalities comprised the study group. They were compared to 350 Israeli women with negative cytology. The risk factors were extracted from an anonymous questionnaire. The results were statistically analyzed and compared to the equivalent figures published in the literature pertaining to non-Jewish

Familial hyperinsulinism (HI) is the most common cause of persistent neonatal hyperinsulinaemic hypoglycemia. Linkage analysis in 15 families (12 Ashkenazi Jewish, 2 consanguineous Arab, 1 non-Jewish Caucasian) mapped HI to chromosome 11p14-15.1 (lod score = 9.5, theta = 0 at D11S921). Recombinants localized the disease locus to the 6.6 cM interval between D11S926 and D11S928. In Jewish families, association (p = 0.003) with specific D11S921/D11S419 haplotypes suggested a founder effect. This locus, which is important for normal glucose-regulated insulin secretion, represents a candidate gene

There is as yet no consensus on the long-term effects of severe life-threatening stresses. In an earlier study (Baider et al. 1992), we gained some understanding of this issue by addressing a specific question: How do individuals who have undergone severe stress in the past cope with a current stress? We investigated whether severe stress occurring in the past had a long-term effect on present coping capabilities. We addressed the question by studying a group of Holocaust survivors (severe past stress) who were diagnosed as having cancer (current stress) and compared them to a matched group of

Deficiency of hexosaminidase A causes the GM2 gangliosidosis known as Tay-Sachs disease. It is now known that this condition has several late-onset variants that cause numerous neuropsychiatric disturbances. Early recognition is important because treatment with phenothiazines and heterocyclic antidepressants may worsen the course. The authors report two cases with several new findings, including prominent psychiatric symptoms without psychosis early in the course of the illness.

The adult form of Tay-Sachs disease, adult GM2 gangliosidosis, is an autosomal recessive neurological disorder caused by a partial deficiency of beta-hexosaminidase A. We had previously identified, in Ashkenazi-Jewish adult GM2 gangliosidosis patients, a Gly269----Ser mutation in the beta-hexosaminidase alpha-subunit. All of the Ashkenazi patients were found to be compound heterozygotes with an allele containing the Gly269----Ser mutation together with one of the Ashkenazi infantile Tay-Sachs alleles. We have now found the same Gly269----Ser mutation in six adult GM2 gangliosidosis patients fr

The association between HLA and coeliac disease (CD) was studied in the Jewish population of Israel. A total of 112 patients were typed for HLA-A,B,C antigens, including 67 patients whose families were typed in order to deduce the genotypes. Forty-seven patients were typed for HLA-DR antigens. The HLA-A,B,C data show a pattern of association, which is similar to that found in European CD patients: HLA-B8 is increased, although to a lower degree; a suggestive, insignificant increase for Aw30, B13 and Cw6 and a decrease of Bw35 were noted. The DR antigens DR3 and DR7 are associated with CD in th
