Enterovirus subtyping in a routine UK laboratory setting between 2013 and 2017.

BACKGROUND: Human enteroviruses (EV) are the leading cause of viral meningitis. EV genotyping is predominantly performed through amplification and sequencing of viral capsid protein-1 (VP1), frequently by national reference laboratories (NRLs). OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of genotyping failure in our NRL-submitted samples and apply a superior alternative assay to resolve untyped specimens. STUDY DESIGN: We initially audited genotyping data received for a cohort of patients in the East Midlands, UK by the NRL between 2013 and 2017, then identified an alternative RT-PCR typing method

A case report of fowl plague keratoconjunctivitis.

A case of human fowl plague keratoconjunctivitis occurred after accidental laboratory exposure. The conjunctivitis was characterised by follicle formation and a mucopurulent discharge, and ran a self-limiting course over two weeks. The keratitis was of an unusual type and consisted of small intraepithelial opacities, which appeared after one week and resolved completely over the next three weeks. The infection, confirmed by viral culture, was produced by Dutch strain (Hav 1 Neq 1) of fowl plague virus.

Primary cutaneous coccidioidomycosis: a review of the literature and a report of a new case.

A 31-year-old woman working in the laboratory with the mycelial phase of Coccidioides immitis developed a firm, raised, erythematous lesion on the left index finger. A biopsy specimen of the lesion grew a white mold that proved to be C immitis. A sinus tract communicating with the lesion and extending into the proximal phalanx developed. The expressed pus was positive for the tissue form of C immitis by potassium hydroxide and periodic acid-Schiff stains and fluorescent-antibody techniques. The sinus tract was irrigated with an aqueous solution of amphotericin B (Fungizone). The tract closed a

A serological survey for leptospirosis in the Enugu area of eastern Nigeria among people at occupational risk.

A serological examination of sera from 661 human volunteers in various occupations comprising 248 coal miners, 138 butchers and abattoir workers, 213 local farmers and 62 hospital laboratory personnel from various communities in Enugu and environs of eastern Nigeria was undertaken between January 1990 and March 1991. Leptospiral antibody titres of 1:100 and above were present in 89 (13.5%). The highest prevalence of antibodies to individual serovars were canicola 21 (23.6%), hardjo 17 (19.1%), pomona 13 (14.6%), icterohaemorrhagiae 11 (12.4%), pyrogenes 8 (9.0%), autumnalis 8 (9.0%) and grippo

Mycobacteriology laboratory.

This review summarizes the most important features of different mycobacterial species, and addresses the issues of specimen collection and shipment, bacteriological diagnosis of tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections, and drug susceptibility testing of different mycobacteria. Special emphasis is placed on the expected turnaround time for the various laboratory reports from different methods. The potential of new methods of today and tomorrow to expedite laboratory results are discussed.

The confirmation and maintenance of smallpox eradication.

In December 1979, an independent scientific commission certified global eradication of smallpox. This conclusion was accepted at the 33d World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) in May 1980. After WHO's intensified eradication program began in 1967, special certification procedures were used in 35 countries where the disease had been endemic and in 44 others at special risk. Six laboratories are known to retain variola virus; efforts have been made to ensure strict containment of these strains. There is no evidence that smallpox will recur as an endemic disease. Nevertheles

Joint report of SBI (Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases), FEBRASGO (Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations), SBU (Brazilian Society of Urology) and SBPC/ML (Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine): recommendations for the clinical management of lower urinary tract infections in pregnant and non-pregnant women.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common condition in women. There is an increased concern on reduction of bacterial susceptibility resulting from wrongly prescribing antimicrobials. This paper summarizes the recommendations of four Brazilian medical societies (SBI - Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases, FEBRASGO - Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations, SBU - Brazilian Society of Urology, and SBPC/ML - Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine) on the management of urinary tract infection in women. Asymptomatic bacteriuria should be screened at l

Rapidly deployable mobile BSL-3 laboratory: a response to the Nipah virus outbreak in Kozhikode, Kerala, India, 2023.

Nipah virus (NiV) outbreak was declared in Kozhikode district, Kerala state, India, on 12 September 2023. The local, state, and national authorities worked in an integrated way to tackle and control the outbreak. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) deployed a team from the ICMR-National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, India, along with an indigenously developed and validated Mobile BSL-3 (MBSL-3) laboratory for providing onsite NiV diagnosis. The Kozhikode district of Kerala state was the epicenter of three NiV outbreaks on May 2018, August 2021, and most recently in September 2023. T
