Life satisfaction across treatment methods for patients with end-stage renal failure.

After a report which challenged the generally-held view that renal-transplant recipients have a psychological advantage compared with patients who undergo dialysis, we surveyed the quality of life and psychological distress in all patients who were managed by renal transplantation or dialysis at The Royal Newcastle Hospital Renal Unit. A questionnaire was mailed to patients which covered demographic daily illness severity; the quality of life (satisfaction with life in general, general health, and sexual, family and social relationships); a 28-item general-health questionnaire; a life-event sc

The validity of neurotic-reactive depression. New data and reappraisal.

A family history of alcoholism can be used as a validating factor in the diagnosis of reactive-neurotic depression. Not only is this true but there are clear data that indicate the presence of positive symptoms that can be used to make the diagnosis. A set of criteria based on previous research is presented for the diagnosis of neurotic-reactive depression. These criteria are based on a clustering of certain symptoms, events, and traits in patients with neurotic-reactive depression. The patients showed stormy life-styles, some specific symptoms, personality abnormalities, presence of life even

Stressful life events and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: The role of maternal and fetal inflammation.

INTRODUCTION: Psychosocial stress is associated with increased risk for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), and inflammation may be a key pathway mediating this association. However, few studies have examined maternal-fetal inflammation during mid-pregnancy. METHODS: We leveraged data from two unique study populations, a study of women undergoing elective pregnancy terminations in San Francisco (SF), California (N = 96) and a prospective birth cohort in Atlanta, Georgia (N = 441). In both populations, experiences of stressful life events (SLEs) were assessed via questionnaire and infla

Recent stressful life events, immunometabolic markers, and risk of schizophrenia: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Although recent stressful life events (SLEs) have been implicated as a risk factor for schizophrenia, prospective evidence and the underlying immunometabolic mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the association between recent SLEs and schizophrenia risk and explored the potential mediating role of immunometabolic markers. METHODS: Data were drawn from the UK Biobank prospective cohort. Cox proportional hazards models, linear mixed-effects models, and mediation analyses were applied. RESULTS: We included 493,294 participants (mean [SD] age, 56.55 [8.09] years; 45.56%

Association of stressful life events with depressive symptoms among adolescents: A network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Stressful life events (SLEs) have been identified as predictors of adolescent depressive symptoms. However, the item-level association is underexplored. Using network analysis, this study aimed to examine the complex associations between various types of SLEs and adolescent depressive symptoms, and to explore gender and age differences in these associations. METHOD: This cross-sectional study used data from 6514 middle school students aged 11-20 in Guangzhou, China. Adolescents self-reported SLEs and depressive symptoms with the Adolescent Self-rating Life Events Checklist and the

Thriving Through Stressful Life Events with Nature: A Mixed-Method Study on Tending Indoor Plants and Rumination Resilience.

Stressful life events are often undesirable, inevitable, and significant changes in one's life, often triggering rumination and posing risks to mental health. However, these risks can be managed through coping strategies. Contact with nature has been shown to reduce rumination and enhance mental well-being. The current study investigated the effectiveness of a one-month nature-based intervention in enhancing psychological well-being and building resilience to manage rumination following a stressful life event. In this mixed-method study, 26 participants were randomly allocated to either an exp

Using large language models for extracting stressful life events to assess their impact on preventive colon cancer screening adherence.

BACKGROUND: Increase in early onset colorectal cancer makes adherence to screening a significant public health concern, with various social determinants playing a crucial role in its incidence, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. Stressful life events, such as divorce, marriage, or sudden loss of job, have a unique position among the social determinants of health. METHODS: We applied a large language model (LLM) to social history sections of clinical notes in the health records database of the Medical University of South Carolina to extract recent stressful life events and assess their impact

Trauma exposure and transdiagnostic distress: Examining shared and posttraumatic stress disorder-specific associations.

We examined transdiagnostic and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-specific associations with multiple forms of trauma exposure within a nationwide U.S. sample (N = 1,649, 50.0% female) of military veterans overselected for PTSD. A higher-order Distress factor was estimated using PTSD, major depressive disorder (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms as indicators. A structural equation model spanning three assessment points over an average of 3.85 years was constructed to examine the unique roles of higher-order Distress and PTSD-specific variance in accounting for the associ

Biopsychosocial factors intersecting with weekly sleep difficulties in the menopause transition.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep difficulties are common in the menopause transition and increase risk for a variety of physical and psychological problems. The current study investigated potential interactions between psychosocial variables and within-person changes in ovarian hormones in predicting perimenopausal sleep problems as well as the potential interactions between poor sleep and psychosocial factors in predicting worsened mood, affect, and attention. STUDY DESIGN: The sample included 101 perimenopausal individuals. Participants completed 12 weekly assessments of self-reported sleep outcomes, depr

Pain and Trauma: The Role of Criterion A Trauma and Stressful Life Events in the Pain and PTSD Relationship.

Chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently co-occur, and research suggests that these 2 conditions exacerbate one another producing greater impact on normal functioning in combination than separately. The influence of traumatic experiences on both pain and PTSD has been shown, but the nature of this interplay remains unclear. Although Criterion A trauma is required for the diagnosis of PTSD, whether the association between PTSD and chronic pain is dependent on Criterion A is underexplored. In this observational cohort study, we examined the association between pain and P

Negative affective responses to positive events and stimuli in patients with complex dissociative disorders: a mixed-methods pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that individuals exposed to (childhood) trauma are not only unable to experience pleasure, known as hedonic deficit (HD), but also experience 'negative affective responses to positive events', known as negative affective interference (NAI). The clinical relevance and prognostic features of NAI have increasingly been recognized. To date, no studies have focused on NAI in patients with complex dissociative disorders (CDDs) who were abused early in life. OBJECTIVE: In this pilot study, we quantitatively and qualitatively investigated how NAI is related to trauma-rel

The Past Victim, the Future Abuser.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma exerts a significant effect on psychological life of people. It is a ubiquitous phenomenon. We face a social epidemic with serious consequences that shatter the life of survivors. Victimization in early years of life entraps the individuals in the victim-rescuer-abuser triangle. Many perpetrators and criminals have had history of childhood abuse. The main objective of this study was the assessment of patients with a history of child abuse who behaved in abusive manner in adulthood. METHODS: By reviewing the files of 3694 patients referred to my outpatient private

The lived experience of recurrence prevention in patients with venous leg ulcers: An interpretative phenomenological study.

AIM OF THE STUDY: To explore patient understanding of why they develop a venous leg ulcer and how they can prevent recurrence. METHOD: The methodological framework of the hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seventeen participants living with a venous leg ulcer from May 2017 to November 2018. Data were analysed using Smith's interpretative hermeneutic analysis. RESULTS: The results are categorised into three main themes: "Trauma due to accident" (initial venous leg ulcer) and "Prevention of ulcer recurrence" (compression); "Trauma due

Life events, coping styles, and psychological well-being in children living with parents who harmfully consume alcohol.

INTRODUCTION: Children living with parents who harmfully consume alcohol might experience more life events, in particular negative, than children living with parents who do not harmfully consume alcohol. They also primarily use less adaptive coping styles and often demonstrate lower resilience. No studies evaluated whether coping styles or psychological well-being might influence the risk of life events occurrence in children living with parents who harmfully consume alcohol. METHODS: Forty-five children living with parents who harmfully consume alcohol and 45 children living with parents who

The association between psychotic experiences and traumatic life events: the role of the intention to harm.

BACKGROUND: Previous work showed traumatic life events (TLE) with intention to harm, like bullying and abuse, to be more strongly associated with psychotic experiences (PE) than other types of trauma, like accidents. However, this association is subject to reporting bias and can be confounded by demographic characteristics and by differences in dose of exposure across different trauma categories. We studied the association between TLE with and without intention to harm and PE, taking into account potential confounders and biases. METHODS: A total of 2245 children and adolescents aged 6-14 yea

Role of stressful life events and kindling in bipolar disorder: Converging evidence from a mania-predominant illness course.

Stressful life events can precipitate relapses and recurrences in bipolar disorder. Kindling in bipolar disorder has been linked to maladaptive psychological reactivity to minor stressful life events. Systematic studies on life events and kindling are rare in bipolar disorder with a manic predominant polarity. One hundred and forty-nine remitted patients with bipolar I disorder were recruited. The National Institute of Mental Health-Life Chart Methodology was used to depict the illness course retrospectively, and the Presumptive Stressful Life Events Scale-Lifetime version was used to record t
