This study was designed to investigate the effects of occlusal splints in the treatment of sagittal fractures of the mandibular condyle in children. From January 1995 to December 2011, 37 sagittal fractures of the mandibular condyle in 30 patients aged 4-8 years old were included in this study. All the patients were treated with 1-2mm occlusal splints in the molar region. The mouths of the patients were kept slightly open by the occlusal splints for 3-6 months, and we reviewed the clinical and radiological remodelling of the affected condyles after treatment. Excellent (n=20) and good (n=10) c

The incidence of diacapitular (intracapsular) fractures of the mandibular condyle has increased in recent years, but their treatment remains inadequate, particularly of type B fractures. To evaluate and compare outcomes of open and closed treatments we created a sheep model of a type B fracture through an osteotomy. Eight sheep were randomly divided into two groups of four each to be given closed treatment or open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and were evaluated by veterinary and radiological examinations. Compared with before the osteotomy, there were significant reductions in maximu

The aim of treatment for luxation fractures of the mandibular articular processes is not only complete anatomical restitution but also restoration of the mobility. In a retrospective study on 242 patients after operative and conservative treatment, it was possible to demonstrate that there are no correlations between fragment position and functional result. Functional restitution was observed after conservative treatment in 65% of cases and after operative treatment in 57%. In order to establish the causes for dysfunction of the lateral pterygoid muscle an electromyographical technique was dev

BACKGROUND: Mandibular angle fractures constitute a significant proportion (23%-42%) of all mandibular fractures. A persistent controversy surrounds the optimal approach for the fixation of mandibular angle fractures: whether to employ a single miniplate or two miniplates. This study aims to assess the comparative efficacy of employing a single miniplate versus two miniplates for the fixation of mandibular angle fractures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty male patients diagnosed with mandibular angle fractures were randomly assigned to either group I or group II. Group I received treatment with a…

The choices for managing a condylar head fracture (CHF) of the mandible are either open surgical or closed functional treatments (CFT) and the decision depends on various factors. The purpose of this systematic review was to ascertain from the available literature whether the open method or CFT yields better outcomes in managing CHF. We have systematically reviewed published articles according to the PRISMA statement. The search was conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and the Cochrane Library database for comparative studies about both open and closed treatments from incepti

Facial trauma in pediatric population predisposes the child to injury of both the developing skeleton and dentition. This article aims to highlight the experience of the authors through a case report, in using self-drilling screws for fixation of mandibular fractures in pediatric age group. The use of self-drilling screws minimizes the complications such as thermal and/or mechanical damage to the developing dentition and the bone. They also provide significant advantages including ease of availability and technique, superior anchorage with primary stability, and minimizing or avoiding permanen…

BACKGROUND: The optimal management of mandibular condylar fractures-surgical versus conservative-remains debated. While surgery aims for anatomical restoration, conservative treatment relies on natural remodelling, especially in children. High-level evidence guiding individualised decisions based on age, fracture type and displacement is still lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To compare surgical and conservative treatment outcomes and identify treatment-specific prognostic factors.
METHODS: This single-centre retrospective cohort included 235 patients with 297 fracture sides treated between 2011 and 2024
