The early diagnoses and treatment of anti-Yo antibody-mediated paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration in a patient with breast cancer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) is a relatively rare complication among patients with cancers with nonmetastatic tumor manifestation, including breast cancer. A breast cancer diagnosis is usually made several months (or even years) after the onset of neurological symptoms. CASE DESCRIPTION: In this study, we describe the early diagnosis and treatment of PCD in one patient with breast cancer. The patient's first symptom was unsteady gait, followed by dizziness and dysarthria of explosive speech. Subacute progressive ataxia symptoms, weight loss, normal imaging findings

Inflammatory breast cancer: early recognition and diagnosis is critical.

Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare and aggressive malignancy that is often initially misdiagnosed because of its similar presentation to more benign breast pathologies such as mastitis, resulting in treatment delays. Presenting symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer include erythema, skin changes such as peau d' orange or nipple inversion, edema, and warmth of the affected breast. The average age at diagnosis is younger than in noninflammatory breast cancer cases. Known risk factors include African American race and obesity. Diagnostic criteria include erythema occupying at least one-third o

Histiocytoid breast carcinoma, neither lobular nor ductal? A case report and literature review.

Histiocytoid breast carcinoma (HBC) is a rare type of breast cancer with controversial histogenesis, which is characterized by abundant foamy cytoplasm, fuzzy cell boundary, linear or annular infiltration, eccentric large irregular nuclei or prominent nucleoli and low mitotic activity. HBC has been considered to be a variant of lobular carcinoma, a variant of apocrine ductal carcinoma, and an apocrine variant of lobular carcinoma and to resemble lipid-rich carcinoma. We presented a case of 75-year-old woman with a 5-cm mass in the left breast. The mass was yellow-beige on cut section. HBC was

Intraabdominal Surgery and Anesthesia Management.

UNLABELLED: Inspired Oxygenation in Surgical Patients During General Anesthesia With Controlled Ventilation: A Concept of Atelectasis. By Bendixen HH, Hedley-Whyte J, and Laver MB. New Engl J Med 1963; 269:991-996. Reprinted with permission. ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to determine if the pattern of ventilation, by itself, influences oxygenation during anesthesia and surgery and examine the hypothesis that progressive pulmonary atelectasis may occur during constant ventilation whenever periodic hyperventilation is lacking, but is reversible by passive hyperinflation of the lungs.

Electrochemotherapy of chest wall breast cancer recurrence.

Chest wall breast cancer recurrence after mastectomy is a disease difficult to treat. Its incidence varies between 5% and 30% in different subset of patients. When possible, radical surgical therapy represents the main treatment approach, however when the disease progresses and/or treatments are not successful, ulceration, bleeding, lymphedema and psychological distress of progressive disease significantly decrease the quality of the remaining life of a patient. When surgical excision of chest wall recurrence is not possible, other local treatments such as radiotherapy, radiotherapy with hyper

A case of osteonecrosis of the jaw in a breast cancer patient with bone metastases receiving long-term treatment with bisphosphonates.

Bisphosphonates (BPs) are often used for the treatment of several diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer-associated hypercalcemia, and osteolytic bone metastasis. Recently, there have been reports of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) in cancer patients whose treatment regimens include BPs. In this case report, we describe complications and treatment of ONJ in a breast cancer patient with bone metastases who received long-term treatment with BPs. A 70-year-old woman underwent modified radical mastectomy on her left breast cancer and received oral 5-fluorouracil derivatives for 2 years in another ho

Internal mammary chain sentinel lymph node identification in breast cancer.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is not usually performed with respect to the internal mammary lymph node chain. However, the SLN may be located in the internal mammary chain, particularly with medial lesions. We carried out this study to investigate whether lymphatic mapping and SLN biopsy can detect internal mammary involvement in patients with breast cancer. METHODS: A dye- and gamma probe-guided SLN biopsy was performed in a consecutive series of 41 patients with tumor in situ or clinical stage I or II breast cancer. After the biopsy, these patients underwent ei

Clinical experience with electron pseudoarc therapy.

Between November 1986 and June 1990, 24 patients were treated with electron pseudoarc therapy at McGill University. There were 21 females and three males aged 27 to 81 years (median 62 years). 17 patients, nine of whom had received previous conventional locoregional irradiation, were treated palliatively for locally extensive breast carcinoma. Eight of these 17 patients achieved a complete, and six a partial, response to treatment; nine subsequently developed evidence of progressive disease within the treatment field after intervals of one to 27 months (median 5 months) following therapy. Eigh

Metastatic breast cancer to bilateral mandibular ramus regions.

Metastatic carcinomas to the jaw bones are uncommon and comprise to about 1% of all malignant oral neoplasms. The purpose of this report is to present a rare case of metastatic breast carcinoma to bilateral mandibular ramus regions. The present case report is about a 40-year-old female patient with the complaints of a paresthesia in the right mandibular area of the last month duration. She was referred to our department by her oncologist with the differential diagnosis of osteonecrosis or metastasis. She had undergone modified radical mastectomy for invasive lobular carcinoma of the left breas

Rare imaging appearance of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast: A case report.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is a rare tumor comprising <0.1% of all breast malignancies. The present study reports the case of a 66-year-old woman who underwent multiple imaging techniques, including mammography, ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The patient reported gradual enlargement of a mass in the left breast. Mammography identified a high-density, irregular mass, with nipple retraction. Ultrasonography revealed an irregular, complex cystic and solid mass with an unclear margin in the subareolar region. The internal vascularity was seen on Doppler exa

Male breast cancer with mandibular metastasis. A case report.

Female breast cancer is one of the major causes of death among women while male breast cancer is relatively uncommon and accounts for about 1% of all breast cancers in both sexes. Influencing factors are: gynecomasty, familiarity for male breast cancer, Jewish and African-American male population. From the histological point of view, it is not different from the female breast cancer, except for the infiltrant ductal carcinoma, but with a much severe prognosis. Breast cancer metastases to the jaws are rare, only 1%; the most common sites of metastases are: lungs(59-69%), liver (58-65%), bone (4

F-18 FDG PET scan findings in a case of carcinoma of the breast with a rare site of metastases to the gingival region.

Malignant tumors of the breast have an inherent potential to metastasize more often to the regional lymph nodes. It is rare to find a metastasis to the oral region from a primary in the breast, but when this does occur, it usually involves the jawbones rather than the soft tissues. A 33-year-old premenopausal woman, a diagnosed case of locally advanced right breast carcinoma, underwent right modified radical mastectomy followed by chemotherapy as per the institutional protocol. She presented after 2 years with an exophytic growth in the upper alveolar region of the oral cavity. Biopsy indicate

Male breast cancer. A report of 71 cases.

Male breast cancer is rare; it constitutes 0.2-1.5% of all malignant tumours in men and 1% of all breast cancers. The goal of this retrospective study is to analyse the epidemiologic, clinic, therapeutic and evolutive profiles of this disease in 71 cases collected at the National Institute of Oncology in Rabat, Morocco, between the years 1985 and 1998. The median age was 60 years. No significant risk factor was found. The average consultation's delay was 35 months. The main clinical complaint was a mass beneath the areola in 86% of the cases, associated with ulceration in 18% of the cases. For

A case of matrix-producing carcinoma of the breast with micoglandular adenosis and review of literature.

Matrix-producing carcinoma (MPC) of the breast is an extremely rare variant of metaplastic breast carcinoma that contains a mixture of epithelial and mesenchymal elements. As overt carcinoma with direct transition to a cartilaginous and/or osseous stromal matrix cells, MPC is of no spindle cells between those two elements. This is the case of a 43 year-old female patient with MPC which coexisted with microglandular adenosis (MGA), atypical MGA (AMGA) and carcinoma in situ arising in MGA (MGACA in situ). MGA is a rare, infiltrative, benign lesion of the breast with an indolent clinical course.

Ultrasound-guided scraping of fibrous capsule plus bilayered negative pressure wound therapy for treatment of refractory postmastectomy seroma.

INTRODUCTION: Seroma is a frequent complication of breast cancer surgery. Treatment of prolonged or refractory seroma remains a clinical challenge. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a novel approach for refractory seroma treatment; the method combines minimally invasive scraping for fibrous capsule removal and self-designed bilayered negative pressure wound therapy (b-NPWT) to achieve favorable wound healing. METHODS: Twenty-four patients with refractory seroma received ultrasound-guided scraping of fibrous capsule around the refractory seroma, and then a bilayered NPWT system simu

A case of donor-site lymphoedema after lymph node-superficial circumflex iliac artery perforator flap transfer.

Vascularised lymph node transfer is a promising technique to treat limb lymphoedema, especially when caused by lymph node dissection. The most common approach is the transfer of superficial inguinal lymph nodes using groin flaps or superficial circumflex iliac artery perforator flaps. Lower-limb lymphatic sequelae are unexpected as these lymph nodes should drain lymph from the lower abdominal wall. Recently, Vignes et al. described two cases out of 26 cases of chronic lymphoedema after superficial inguinal lymph node harvest. From a series of 42 vascularised lymph node transfers performed at o

Metachronous Paget's disease of the breast: case report.

BACKGROUND: Congenital Choanal Artesia (CCA) is a rare cause of upper airway obstruction, yet it is the most common congenital anomaly of the nose. While the unilateral condition could be undiagnosed, bilateral CCA may be life-threatening, especially for newborns. Some CCA may be associated with other congenital abnormalities, which leads to a systematic screening during the diagnostic assessment. The diagnosis is easy. However, surgical management is still controversial. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study gathering data on management of CCA over 42 months. We reported epidemiologica
