Polymeric Scaffolds for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Regenerative Medicine.

Dental, oral, and craniofacial (DOC) regenerative medicine aims to repair or regenerate DOC tissues including teeth, dental pulp, periodontal tissues, salivary gland, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), hard (bone, cartilage), and soft (muscle, nerve, skin) tissues of the craniofacial complex. Polymeric materials have a broad range of applications in biomedical engineering and regenerative medicine functioning as tissue engineering scaffolds, carriers for cell-based therapies, and biomedical devices for delivery of drugs and biologics. The focus of this review is to discuss the properties and clini

Dopaminergic Modulation of Orofacial Mechanical Hypersensitivity Induced by Infraorbital Nerve Injury.

While the descending dopaminergic control system is not fully understood, it is reported that the hypothalamic A11 nucleus is its principle source. To better understand the impact of this system, particularly the A11 nucleus, on neuropathic pain, we created a chronic constriction injury model of the infraorbital nerve (ION-CCI) in rats. ION-CCI rats received intraperitoneal administrations of quinpirole (a dopamine D2 receptor agonist). ION-CCI rats received microinjections of quinpirole, muscimol [a gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptor agonist], or neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-O

Successful management of recurrent adenoid cystic carcinoma in the deep infratemporal fossa by maxillo-orbito-zygomatic approach.

OBJECTIVE: In the case of deep invasion of an infratemporal fossa (ITF) tumor, surgeons find it difficult to gain sufficient visualization and working space by conventional surgical approaches. To overcome these limitations, we have developed a novel surgical technique, maxillo-orbito-zygomatic (MOZ) approach, by combining partial lateral maxillectomy with the conventional orbito-zygomatic approach. METHODS: A 63-year-old male presented with the fifth recurrent adenoid-cystic carcinoma in the right deep ITF. Using a Weber-Ferguson-type incision and partial dismasking, we elevated the skin and

Assessment of obstructive sleep apnoea treatment success or failure after maxillomandibular advancement.

Maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) is an alternative therapeutic option that is highly effective for treating obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). MMA provides a solution for OSA patients that have difficulty accepting lifelong treatments with continuous positive airway pressure or mandibular advancement devices. The goal of this study was to investigate the different characteristics that determine OSA treatment success/failure after MMA. The apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) was used to determine the success or failure of OSA treatment after MMA. Sixty-two patients underwent MMA for moderate and sever

Taste-mediated behavioral and electrophysiological responses by the predatory fish Ariopsis felis to deterrent pigments from Aplysia californica ink.

Chemical defenses are used by many organisms to avoid predation, and these defenses may function by stimulating predators' chemosensory systems. Our study examined detection mechanisms for components of defensive ink of sea hares, Aplysia californica, by predatory sea catfish, Ariopsis felis. Behavioral analyses show aplysioviolin and phycoerythrobilin are detected intra-orally and by barbels and are deterrent at concentrations as low as 0.1% full strength. We performed electrophysiological recordings from the facial-trigeminal nerve complex innervating the maxillary barbel and tested aplysiov

Cranial nerve injuries are associated with specific craniofacial fractures after blunt trauma.

Identification of cranial nerve (CN) injuries after blunt trauma is often delayed due to concomitant life-threatening trauma, altered mental status, and associated bony or soft tissue injuries. We hypothesized that specific craniofacial fracture (FX) patterns are associated with CN injuries, permitting earlier diagnosis. The trauma registry at a single institution was queried for all CN injuries and craniofacial FXs. Associations were determined by Fisher's exact test. Ninety CN injuries were identified in 59 patients. CN injuries were diagnosed on the day of admission in 24 (41%) patients. Th

Oral Burkitt's lymphoma in children: the Moroccan experience.

Thirty-seven children with Burkitt's lymphoma of the oral region diagnosed between 1998 and 2005 were reviewed. There were 31 boys and 6 girls. The mean age at diagnosis was 6.64 years (range 2-15 years) with a mean delay to diagnosis of 41 days (range 10 days-2 months). There was a predominance of maxillary over mandibular involvement: 1.44:1. Complaints included exophytic mass with dental displacement (100%), abdominal pain (68%), nerve palsy (28%) and orbital swelling (21%). Toothache as initial complaint led to dental extraction in 12 cases. According to the Murphy classification, there we

[Jaffé-Lichtenstein fibrous dysplasia as a cause of progressive protrusio bulbi and temporary vision loss].

We report the rare clinical and morphological features found in a patient with fibrous dysplasia of the paranasal sinuses. In general, diagnosis of tumor sinuses can be made without difficulty and can be made on the basis of three criteria: clinical examination, radiographic findings and histologic examination of a biopsy. Nevertheless, if rare morphological findings occur, obtaining the correct diagnosis can be complicated. Therefore, we report our experiences in managing a 22 year old woman with fibrous dysplasia located in the paranasal sinuses that resulted in proptosis and temporary blind

Epidemiology and clinical features of short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: To synthesize the available epidemiologic data on short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks (SUNHA). This, in turn, might inform diagnostic work-up and clinical decision-making. METHODS: EMBASE and PubMed were searched for observational studies reporting on the prevalence or relative frequency of SUNHA or its individual clinical features. Two investigators independently conducted title and abstract screening, full-text review, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment, and random-effects meta-analyses were performed to estimate the prevalence or relative frequency

Case Report: A Rare Case of Silent Sinus Syndrome and Vertical Diplopia.

SIGNIFICANCE: Silent sinus syndrome is classically a maxillary sinus disease characterized by transient and variable vertical diplopia, hypoglobus, and enophthalmos. Uncommon presentations may exist, and although rare, it should be considered when diagnostic testing is inconsistent with more common etiologies of diplopia. PURPOSE: This study aimed to report an unusual presentation of silent sinus syndrome and review the thought process in diagnosing and managing this condition. CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old white man presented to the eye clinic with left upper eyelid ptosis and intermittent ver

Role of stereotactic radiosurgery for recurrent skull base acinic cell carcinoma: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Acinic cell carcinomas (AcCCs), rare malignancies of the salivary glands, often recur and metastasize, particularly in the skull base. Conventional radical resection can be invasive for skull base AcCCs adjacent to cranial nerves and major vasculature, and the effectiveness of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) as an alternative is not well established. OBSERVATIONS: This case report details the application of SRS for recurrent skull base AcCCs. A 71-year-old male with a history of resection for a right mandibular AcCC 23 years earlier experienced tumor recurrence involving the right
