Bacteriological findings and antimicrobial susceptibility in chronic sinusitis with nasal polyp.

CONCLUSIONS: We recommend amoxacillin/clavulanate, cephalosporins and macrolides rather than penicillin as the first-line drug in chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps. In cases where there is no improvement of symptoms, cultures should be taken from the middle meatus, followed by appropriate selection of second-line antibiotics according to the sensitivity test results. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the causative bacteria and the antimicrobial susceptibility in patients with chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps in Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The bacteriology and antimicrobial susceptibility of ma

Sudden Diplopia Two Months After a Blowout Fracture: A Case Report of Orbital Tissue Adhesion Associated With Acute Sinusitis.

Blowout fractures (BOFs) frequently result in early-onset diplopia, which often resolves spontaneously. Delayed diplopia is rare, and there … vealed an extensive orbital floor fracture with herniation into the maxillary sinus and odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. The late-onset diplopia was believed to be caused by adhesions of the tissues surrounding the inferior rectus muscle due to the spread of maxillary sinus inflammation into the orbit. Surgery was performed 154 days after the trauma, which included e …

Subdural empyema complicating sinusitis.

Acute sinusitis is a common childhood illness most often involving the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses. Diagnosis is usually based on a history of an upper respiratory tract infection lasting longer than 7 days with a prominent nasal component. Treatment involves 10-14 days of antibiotics. Intracranial complications of pediatric sinusitis are rare, but potentially life-threatening. These include cavernous sinus thrombosis, orbital and intracranial extension, and meningitis. Children with these complications may experience significant morbidity from their infection. In such cases, delay in diagno

The mucoceles or pyoceles of the paranasal sinuses.

Fifty-five mucopyoceles in 53 patients were diagnosed during the 10-year period from 1982 to 1992 in our department. These included 8 from the frontal sinus, 25 from the maxillary sinus, 10 from the ethmoidal sinus, 1 from the maxillary and ethmoidal sinuses, 7 from the frontoethmoidal sinuses and 4 from the sphenoethmoidal sinuses. The patients ranged in age from 8 to 78 years (mean 47.1 years). The ratio of males to females was 31 to 22. The rhinologic symptoms occurred most often in maxillary mucopyoceles and were rare in the other groups whereas ophthalmic symptoms were noticed in most of

Obliterative sinusitis: An underreported clinical entity.

Obliterative paranasal sinusitis is a rare sequela and end stage of chronic rhinosinusitis, which is often overlooked on imaging. It is an exuberant form of neo-osteogenesis characterized by complete or partial obliteration of the sinus cavity by new bone formation. This article presents a series of cases of obliterative sinusitis involving the sphenoid and maxillary sinuses. It is important to comment on the presence of obliterative sinusitis in the radiology report and not confuse it for native bone, fibro-osseous lesion, or arrested pneumatization, as this may have clinical implications for

Histologic Evaluation of Sinus Grafting Materials After Peri-implantitis-Induced Failure: A Case Series.

PURPOSE: This human case series presents the clinical and histologic results of five cases of peri-implantitis with subsequent sinus graft infections. Complications may follow maxillary sinus augmentation procedures. It is possible to have an inflammatory reaction, movement of the implant inside the sinus, formation of an insufficient quantity of osseous tissue, and the production of an oroantral fistula. Complications following maxillary subantral augmentation procedures are relatively rare; however, the risks and benefits of any surgery must be carefully evaluated at the onset. MATERIALS AN

Incidence of maxillary sinus septa in the saudi population.

BACKGROUND: The variability in the maxillary sinus anatomy makes dental implant planning challenging. One of the anatomical landmarks that could affect the decision for implant placement around the maxillary sinus is the sinus septa. This study aimed to retrospectively determine the prevalence, anatomical distribution, and morphology of the maxillary sinus septa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 309 CBCT images that were analyzed to determine the prevalence, height, location, and orientation of the maxillary sinus septa. Descriptive statistics, Mann‒Whitney U tests, and Kruskal‒Wall

Endoscopic Management of Maxillary Sinus Diseases of Dentoalveolar Origin.

Endoscopic surgery on the maxillary sinus has experienced significant advances in technique and approaches since the maxillary antrostomy was introduced in the 1980s. Disease processes that previously required open surgical approaches to the maxillary sinus can now be treated endoscopically while preserving form and function of the sinus and without injuring the maxillary sinus mucosa or disrupting normal mucociliary clearance. Understanding the techniques described in this article will allow surgeons to appropriately plan treatment strategies for patients with a variety of maxillary sinus dis

Wegener's granulomatosis with extensive bone abnormalities mimicking fungal sinusitis.

Abnormalities of the underlying bone of the paranasal sinuses have sometimes been shown in Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). We describe an interesting case of WG with extensive bone abnormalities in the sinuses mimicking fungal sinusitis. A 30-year-old woman presented with intermittent unilateral epistaxis. Biopsy was performed for the granulation tissue in the right nasal cavity, and she was diagnosed as having WG. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a ring-like calcification, mimicking a fungus ball, in the right maxillary sinus. Endoscopic sinus surgery was performed to confirm the diagnosis. A
