The finding of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare, potentially fatal illness that physicians often associate with young, menstruating females. However, TSS is not exclusively a disease of females. We report the unusual case of an adult male patient who presented to the Emergency Department at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown with toxic shock syndrome secondary from a fish tooth suffered while trout fishing. The diagnostic features of TSS and treatment are also discussed in this article.

Acute toxic shock syndrome (TSS), initially described in association with the use of super absorbent tampons in menstruating women, has complicated a variety of surgical procedures. Recent attention in head and neck surgery has focused on absorbent packing materials, such as those used in postoperative nasal care. It is important to maintain a high index of suspicion in all postoperative patients to fever, hypotension, and erythroderma. We report TSS following submandibular gland excision.

Endometriosis affects 5-20% of menstruating women and occurs primarily within the pelvis. Although histologically benign, ectopic endometrial tissue possesses the ability to grow, infiltrate and disseminate with life threatening results/consequences. This is illustrated by a case of asymptomatic endometriosis involving the ureters and rectum. The importance of evaluating the integrity of the urinary tract in endometriosis, especially cases involving the uterosacral ligaments, is stressed. Appropriate therapy followed by periodic surveillance for progression of the disease is discussed.

Fluid aspirated from the vagina of pregnant or non-pregnant women, either normally menstruating or using hormonal contraceptives, proved to be an adequate culture medium for Candida albicans. The growth-promoting activity did not differ between groups. A medical history of vaginal candidosis did not influence this growth-promoting activity. It is concluded that an enhanced susceptibility to this manifestation with C. albicans is not related to this capacity of the fluid contained in the vaginal cavity to serve as a growth-promoting medium.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of endometrial tissue in airways, pleura and lung parenchyma is called thoracic endometriosis syndrome (TES). It is a rare pathology, and typically consists of catamenial pneumothorax, haemothorax, haemoptysis, and pulmonary nodules. We report a case of a 36-year-old woman with thoracic endometriosis causing catamenial haemothorax.
CONCLUSIONS: The diagnosis of thoracic endometriosis is complicated and often delayed. TES should be suspected in a reproductive age woman with exacerbating symptoms during the menstruation. Treatment may be medical and surgical.

Sheehan's syndrome (SS) is a pituitary failure after delivery. Symptoms depend on which hormonal axis are affected, failure to lactate and resume menstruation is most frequent but cortisol deficiency is most dangerous and may lead to death if undiagnosed. We present a 38 year old female that was diagnosed with SS after repeated visits to health care professionals with typical symptoms of SS. The purpose of this case report is to draw attention to SS and the symptoms of cortisol deficiency.

A young woman with amenorrhea-galactorrhea induced by a prolactin (PRL) secreting pituitary macroadenoma, was treated with bromocriptine 5 mg/day per os. Serum PRL levels were normal at 6 weeks and menstruation appeared at 8 weeks of treatment. When twenty months of treatment were completed, a tomographic study of the pituitary was unable to show any enlargement. Controversies related to macroprolactinomas treatment are discussed and it is suggested that treatment with dopamine agonists must be the elective treatment for patients with macroprolactinoma.

Two young female patients are presented who answered to the criteria for diagnosis of toxic shock syndrome, which was first described in 1978 and reached an epidemic peak in 1979 and 1980 in the USA. The disease almost exclusively affects women using tampons during menstruation and is characterized by fever, hypotony, multisystem involvement and exanthema following by skin desquamation. The disease is closely associated with the isolation of S. aureus in the vagina or elsewhere and is probably caused by a staphylococcal toxin.
