Combining Self-Determination Theory and Photo-Elicitation to Understand the Experiences of Homeless Women.

Homelessness is a complex and gendered experience. To understand this complexity, novel theoretical frameworks and appropriate research methods are required. Most women living without homes have experienced some form of abuse or mental health issues before becoming, being or exiting homelessness and there is high prevalence of trauma in this vulnerable population. Researchers investigating women's homelessness need to ensure the research process is not retraumatising. This paper proposes a theoretical framework that combines self-determination theory (SDT) and photo-elicitation to support and

[Interactional therapy program for mothers with postpartum mental disorders. First results of a pilot project].

BACKGROUND: The period around delivery frequently causes psychiatric diseases that may disturb maternal competence and influence bonding behaviour with the child. Until now only a few possibilities have existed for inpatient treatment and therapy for these problems. The therapy program developed in Wiesloch, Germany, is especially well suited to such patients. METHODS: Fifty-three mothers with postpartum disorders (33 depressive, 20 psychotic) were examined before and after therapy. Psychopathologic severity, psychosocial level of functioning, and parameters of the mother-child interaction we

The Social Behavior Inventory for children in a child abuse treatment program: development of a tool to measure interpersonal behavior.

This article presents information about a tool that can be completed in a few minutes to measure the interpersonal behavior of childen particpating in a child abuse treatment program. One sample of children came from the community and had no reported history of abuse or mental health services. A second sample was children obtaining therapy services through a child abuse treatment program. Factor analysis of scores provided by parents for their children obtaining therapy services led to the development of three scales to assess aversive interpersonal behavior, two to measure prosocial interpers

Typical and optimal aging in women and men: is there a double standard?

Gender stereotypes of typical and optimal, mentally healthy aging were examined with sixty-year-old and seventy-five-year-old women, men and gender-unspecified older people as target persons. Respondents were young adult individuals (N = 232) and their older adult relatives/acquaintances (N = 233). Perceptions of typical aging varied depending on the age of the respondent, the target gender and the target age. Gender stereotypes were more pronounced than age stereotypes: respondents described same-gender targets more similarly than same-age targets. Older women were rated higher on dimensions

Stopping treatment for end-stage renal failure: the rights of children and adolescents.

Dialysis and transplantation have been of obvious benefit to children with renal failure. Yet this is not always so. End-stage treatment can also create physical and mental suffering, for both patients and their families. For this reason, the availability of life-saving treatment creates difficult ethical and legal dilemmas concerning when it can morally and lawfully be rejected. These dilemmas are explored through a general account of the doctrine of informed consent and its application to the refusal of such therapy. Clinical and parental duties of care are outlined for young and adolescent

Building response classes: a comparison of two procedures for teaching generalized pouring to learners with severe disabilities.

Five individuals with profound mental retardation received instruction on liquid pouring. The effects of two training strategies on performance with nontrained pitchers and receptacles were compared within a split multiple baseline design across subjects. One training approach followed general case instruction guidelines in which both difficult and easy teaching examples were selected that sampled the range of relevant stimulus and response variation. The second training approach approximated the early steps in an easy-to-hard sequencing strategy and involved using only a set of easy teaching

Tensions as productive forces in coproduced mental health research: an explorative qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: In coproduced research, competing priorities among researchers and partners often surface as the work progresses, making such processes rarely tension-free. Although coproduction approaches are increasingly used in mental health research, there is limited understanding of how tensions are managed and how this influences collaboration. Hence, the aim of the study is to explore how tensions emerge within coproduced research by analysing the conditions, interactions, and processes influencing their emergence and management. METHODS: This study was conducted within UserInvolve, a six‑

An exploratory structural equation modeling representation of the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0 in Iranian samples: Association with attachment, mentalizing, and personality pathology.

The Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0) is a brief measure for personality functioning based on the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders. Despite a strong emerging research base in support of the measure, most studies have been conducted in North America or Europe, and few studies have explored its association with theoretically relevant correlates such as mentalizing and attachment. The current study examined its factor structure, reliability, measurement invariance, and validity in Iranian samples using Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling. Two Iran

Enhancing adherence to antipsychotic treatment for bipolar disorders. Comparison of mobile app-based psychoeducation, group psychoeducation, and the combination of both: protocol of a three-arm single-blinded parallel-group multi-centre randomised trial.

Group Psychoeducation (PE) is an effective strategy to enhance adherence to antipsychotic treatment in Bipolar Disorders (BD). However, it requires attendance to weekly sessions during a period of about 6 months. This may impede its application for those patients living far from mental health centres, resulting inequality in access to evidence-based care. Therefore, there is an increasing need to find new efficient strategies to deliver and extend PE programs to a wider population of BD patients. Mobile apps are a cost-effective way to deliver PE. In the Italian healthcare context, no evidence

Depression and Anxiety Among Emergency Department Patients: Utilization and Barriers to Care.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression rates among emergency department (ED) patients are substantially higher than those in the general population. Additionally, those with mental health issues often have difficulty accessing care. Unfortunately, issues of anxiety and depression are frequently not addressed in the ED due to competing care priorities. This may lead to increased burden and overcrowding in EDs. OBJECTIVE: This study related anxiety and depression with ED utilization and perceived barriers to care. METHODS: To limit the impact of insurance coverage on ED utilization and access to c

Promoting child and adolescent mental health in the context of the HIV/AIDS pandemic with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: The pandemic of HIV/AIDS is actually a composite of many regional and national-level epidemics. The progress made in many parts of the developed and developing world is tempered by the continued devastating consequences of HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This review focuses on the ways in which children and adolescents are impacted by the epidemic, giving particular attention to their mental health. METHODS: A health promotion framework is adopted to guide analysis. Three issues are covered: prevention of HIV infection, care and treatment of children infected with HIV,

[Unmet health care needs of younger and older people with intellectual, mental and multiple disabilities: A pilot study in a facility in the Ruhr area].

INTRODUCTION: Unmet health care needs are seen as a key indicator of equity in access to health care. With younger people, they can lead to poorer health outcomes in adulthood, and in older people they can be associated with an increased risk of mortality. The presence of a disability is considered a risk factor for unmet needs. Against this background, unmet health care needs of younger and older people with intellectual, mental and multiple disabilities in Essen were examined as part of a qualitative pilot study in a facility in Essen. METHOD: The interview study includes the perspectives o

Diagnosis of Perinatal Mental Health Conditions Following Medicaid Expansion to Include Low-Income Immigrants.

IMPORTANCE: For some low-income people, access to care during pregnancy is not guaranteed through Medicaid, based on their immigration status. While states have the option to extend Emergency Medicaid coverage for prenatal and postpartum care, many states have not expanded coverage. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether receipt of first prenatal care services and subsequently receipt of postpartum care through extensions of Emergency Medicaid coverage were associated with increases in diagnosis and treatment of perinatal mental health conditions. Finances in the older patient with cognitive impairment: "He didn't want me to take over".

Financial capacity can be defined as the ability to independently manage one's financial affairs in a manner consistent with personal self-interest. Financial capacity is essential for an individual to function independently in society; however, Alzheimer disease and other progressive dementias eventually lead to a complete loss of financial capacity. Many patients with cognitive impairment and their families seek guidance from their primary care clinician for help with financial impairment, yet most clinicians do not understand their role or know how to help. We review the prevalence and impa

Sexual abuse allegations by children with neuropsychiatric disorders.

All Swedish court cases from 2004 and 2006 concerning alleged child sexual abuse (sexual harassment excluded) were identified through criminal registers. Fourteen cases (one boy) concerned a child with a neuropsychiatric disorder. The diagnostic groups were mental retardation (10 cases), autism (three cases), and ADHD (one case). Psychiatric experts were engaged in only two cases. When experts were involved, the courts focused on credibility issues. When the courts applied neuropsychiatric arguments in the absence of an expert, they used developmental arguments. When the authors found that sig
