The anti-allergic effect of Lactobacillus plantarum GUANKE on allergic rhinitis induced by either ragweed pollen or house dust mites in mice.

BACKGROUND: Current treatment strategies for Allergic rhinitis (AR) are often limited by adverse effects and less efficacy. This study aims to evaluate the therapeutic effect of Lactobacillus plantarum GUANKE in either ragweed pollen (RAGW)- or house dust mite (HDM)-induced AR models. METHODS: Mice were sensitized intraperitoneally with RAGW or HDM on days 0, 7, and 14, followed by daily intranasal challenges with the respective allergen from day 21 to day 49. The treatment group mice were orally administered cetirizine (10 mg/kg) as positive control or three different doses of L. plantarum G

Hosts and vectors of scrub typhus in Chile: epidemiological study and molecular analyses of Orientia infection in rodents and rodent-associated mites.

Candidatus Orientia chiloensis causes scrub typhus over a wide geographical range in southern Chile. The life cycle, including vectors and r … x, age, and mite infestation. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Orientia sequences from trombiculid mites (Proschoengastia eloisae) were identical to those from scrub typhus patients from the same region. The results suggest that these rodent-associated mites serve as vectors and play an important role in the ecology of scrub typhus in southern Chile. F …

Bacterial pathogens' screening in Brazilian chigger mites (Trombidiformes: Trombiculidae), with the first report of 'Candidatus Rickettsia colombianensi'-like in avian-associated chiggers.

Chiggers are larval ectoparasites of the Trombiculidae that can transmit pathogens to their hosts. In this study, chiggers collected from birds in Brazil were morphologically identified as Blankaartia sinnamaryi, Eutrombicula batatas, Eutrombicula daemoni, Eutrombicula goeldii, Eutrombicula tinami, and Parasecia gilbertoi. For these specimens, a beginning attempt at molecular identification were also provided, as well as, were genetically screened to detect bacterial pathogens. The species B. sinnamaryi and E. tinami were positive for Rickettsia felis-like and 'Candidatus Rickettsia colombiane

Midface toddler excoriation syndrome (MiTES) can be caused by autosomal recessive biallelic mutations in a gene for congenital insensitivity to pain, PRDM12.

BACKGROUND: Midface toddler excoriation syndrome (MiTES) is a condition recently reported in three unrelated children. Habitual scratching from the first year of life inflicted deep, chronic, scarring wounds around the nose and eyes. One child had a mild neurological deficit but there was no other evidence of insensitivity to pain. Bilateral distribution and localization to the midface distinguish MiTES from other causes of self-inflicted skin damage such as trigeminal trophic syndrome. An earlier study of five siblings from a consanguineous Irish family, with lesions corresponding to MiTES pl…

Estimation of the genome sizes of the chigger mites Leptotrombidium pallidum and Leptotrombidium scutellare based on quantitative PCR and k-mer analysis.

BACKGROUND: Leptotrombidium pallidum and Leptotrombidium scutellare are the major vector mites for Orientia tsutsugamushi, the causative agent of scrub typhus. Before these organisms can be subjected to whole-genome sequencing, it is necessary to estimate their genome sizes to obtain basic information for establishing the strategies that should be used for genome sequencing and assembly. METHOD: The genome sizes of L. pallidum and L. scutellare were estimated by a method based on quantitative real-time PCR. In addition, a k-mer analysis of the whole-genome sequences obtained through Illumina …

Some laelapine mites (Acari: Laelapidae) ectoparasitic on small mammals in the Galapagos Islands, including a new species of Gigantolaelaps from Aegialomys galapagoensis.

A collection of laelapine mites from small mammals in the Galapagos Islands are identified and their host distributions reviewed. Two species of native rodents, Aegialomys galapagoensis and Nesoryzomys narboroughii, were infested only with laelapine species typical of Neotropical oryzomyine rodents; Rattus rattus was infested with Laelaps nuttalli, a host-specific ectoparasite endemic to Old World Rattus. A synopsis of Gigantolaelaps Fonseca is provided and we describe a new laelapine mite, Gigantolaelaps aegialomys n. sp., from the pelage of the rodent A. galapagoensis on Santa Fe Island. The…

Simple method of detecting sarcoptes scabiei var hominis mites among bedridden elderly patients suffering from severe scabies infestation using an adhesive-tape.

OBJECT: Scabies infestation is very common among bedridden elderly patients. The standard method of diagnosis for scabies by scraping the skin requires some skill. Therefore, dermatologists employ this method. However, dermatologists are usually not present in most long-term nursing units. Thus, we tried to catch mites using a strong transparent adhesive tape commercially available for packing use as an alternative method for the diagnosis of severe scabies infestation. METHODS: After firmly applying the adhesive side of the tape onto an appropriate skin lesion of patients, the tape was pulle…

Divergent diversity and composition of microbial communities between the whole body and dissected gut of oribatid mites revealed by high-throughput sequencing.

Soil microarthropods are known to harbor diverse microbial communities that play crucial roles in host physiology and ecological functions. Due to the minute size of oribatid mites, microbial studies have traditionally relied on whole body DNA extraction after surface sterilization, potentially confounding gut microbiota with microorganisms from other tissues. This study employed high-throughput Illumina sequencing to comprehensively compare bacterial and fungal communities between the whole body and dissected gut samples of the oribatid mite Eremobelba eharai. Our results revealed significant…

Comprehensive Surveillance of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus in Patients with Acute Febrile Illness, Wild Rodents, and Trombiculid Larval Mites, Thailand.

Infection with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (Bandavirus dabieense) virus poses a substantial public health threat because of its high mortality rates and severe complications. The virus is prevalent in Asia, although data from Thailand are scarce. Our study confirmed the virus in 1.6% of acute febrile illness patients and specific antibodies in 3% of archived samples since 2015 in Thailand. Nationwide zoonotic surveillance identified the virus in 8 rodent species and 4 chigger genera. Our findings underscore the importance of raising awareness among healthcare providers and the

Africanized honey bees in Colombia exhibit high prevalence but low level of infestation of Varroa mites and low prevalence of pathogenic viruses.

The global spread of the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor has promoted the spread and virulence of highly infectious honey bee viruses. This phenomenon is considered the leading cause for the increased number of colony losses experienced by the mite-susceptible European honey bee populations in the Northern hemisphere. Most of the honey bee populations in Central and South America are Africanized honey bees (AHBs), which are considered more resistant to Varroa compared to European honey bees. However, the relationship between Varroa levels and the spread of honey bee viruses in AHBs remain
