Sensory impairment, loneliness, and the emergence of physical-psychological-cognitive multimorbidity: a cross-national cohort study in China, the United States, and England.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence of physical diseases, psychological disorders, and cognitive impairment-here termed physical-psychological-cognitive multimorbidity (PPC-M)-poses growing challenges to healthy aging but its upstream, modifiable determinants remain underexplored. Sensory impairments are common in later life and may be associated with the emergence of PPC-M, partly through psychosocial factors such as loneliness. This study aimed to examine the associations of vision, hearing, and dual sensory impairments with incident PPC-M and to assess whether loneliness partly explains these ass

Benefits of Sexual Activity on Psychological, Relational, and Sexual Health During the COVID-19 Breakout.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19-related lockdown has profoundly changed human behaviors and habits, impairing general and psychological well-being. Along with psychosocial consequences, it is possible that sexual behavior was also affected. AIMS: With the present study, we evaluated the impact of the community-wide containment and consequent social distancing on the intrapsychic, relational, and sexual health through standardized psychometric tools. METHODS: A case-control study was performed through a web-based survey and comparing subjects of both genders with (group A, N = 2,608) and without (gr

Executive Functions and Conceptual Models: A First Look at a Complex Topic: Commentary.

BACKGROUND: Since the late 19th century and over the last decades, executive functions (EF) have received increasing attention in neuropsychology and clinical psychology for their influence on various domains of functioning, activities of daily living, and various psychological and mental disorders. METHODS: In this commentary, we aim to describe the major theoretical models of EF, their structures, clinical implications, with a focus on some neurodevelopmental disorders and major neurocognitive disorders. RESULTS: Two main approaches emerge: unitary models (e.g., Stuss and Benson, Norman an

Using machine learning to predict pretreatment drinking changes.

BACKGROUND: A body of research suggests that many participants in alcohol use treatment research begin making changes to their drinking behavior prior to beginning treatment. Although several studies have examined factors associated with such change, results have been mixed or yielded small effects. Both theoretical and methodological limitations have hindered efforts to understand such change, highlighting the need for novel analytic approaches. This study aimed to examine how traditional modeling methods (linear and logistic regression) and machine learning (recursive partitioning, random fo

The paradox of compassion: The mediating role of psychological well-being in the association between compassion for others and resilience among emerging adults.

The present study investigated psychological well-being as a mediator between compassion for others and resilience with gender moderating the compassion-psychological well-being path in a sample of 324 young adults in Türkiye (mean age = 22.98 years). The findings indicated that there was no significant bivariate association between compassion for others and resilience. However, the analyses demonstrated a suppression effect when psychological well-being was included in the model. Specifically, the direct association between compassion and resilience became negative, while compassion simultane

A review and novel theoretical model of how negative emotions influence inflammation: The critical role of emotion regulation.

Psychological distress is an inevitable part of life. Research drawing on theories from clinical psychology, health psychology, and psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) has identified relationships between negative emotions such as anxiety and sadness with inflammation. When not regulated properly, negative emotions can create biological wear and tear on the body that can increase risk for morbidity and mortality. This review discusses previously available research on relationships between negative emotions and emotion regulation with inflammation among both physically healthy adults and those with chr

Adolescent predictors of post-traumatic growth during the COVID-19 pandemic: a 28-year longitudinal study.

Background: Despite growing interest in the positive psychological consequences of trauma, such as post-traumatic growth (PTG), most existing studies rely on cross-sectional designs, limiting our understanding of how and when growth occurs. Longitudinal research is needed to identify early-life antecedents of PTG and clarify its developmental pathways. Objective: This study examined whether social, psychological, and sociodemographic factors in adolescence predict PTG in midlife in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.Method: We used data from a 28-year population-based longitudinal study (N = 2,2

Beyond Clinical Predictors: Determining the Impact of Psychosocial Factors in Chronic Pain After Spinal Cord Injury.

UNLABELLED: Although chronic pain is common after traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) and prognostic models have traditionally prioritized clinical injury characteristics, the relative contribution of sociodemographic and psychological factors remains undercharacterized. METHODS: Secondary analysis of a national longitudinal cohort from United States inpatient rehabilitation centers participating in the Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems. Adults with traumatic SCI (N=1303) completed Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems Form 1 and a 1-year follow-up Form 2 interview. Pain intensity at 1 year was asse

Caregivers serving as confidants: relationship correlates and well-being by care-recipients' dementia status.

OBJECTIVES: Family and unpaid caregivers are mainstays of help with daily activities when older adults experience health problems; caregivers can also be relied on as confidants for discussing important matters. It remains unclear what characteristics of caregiving relationships may underlie caregivers' confidant status, how serving this additional role affects their psychological well-being, and whether these associations vary by the presence of dementia in older adults. METHODS: We used data from the 2017 National Health and Aging Trends Study and the National Study of Caregiving. Participa

From childhood abuse and lack of social support to intimate partner violence: The mediating role of impulsivity and attentional functioning.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment and limited social support are established risk factors for intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW), yet the self-regulatory mechanisms linking them to perpetration remain unclear. We tested whether impulsivity and sustained attention mediate the associations between childhood abuse, perceived social support, and IPVAW perpetration and recidivism. METHODS: 211 convicted male perpetrators (M = 40.7 years) completed validated self-report and performance measures: Revised Conflict Tactics Scales-Parent-Child (childhood physical/psychological abuse), Fun

Contemplative/emotion training reduces negative emotional behavior and promotes prosocial responses.

Contemplative practices are believed to alleviate psychological problems, cultivate prosocial behavior and promote self-awareness. In addition, psychological science has developed tools and models for understanding the mind and promoting well-being. Additional effort is needed to combine frameworks and techniques from these traditions to improve emotional experience and socioemotional behavior. An 8-week intensive (42 hr) meditation/emotion regulation training intervention was designed by experts in contemplative traditions and emotion science to reduce "destructive enactment of emotions" and

The role of Experiential Avoidance in transdiagnostic compulsive behavior: A structural model analysis.

Compulsivity is recognized as a transdiagnostic phenotype, underlying a variety of addictive and obsessive-compulsive behaviors. However, current understanding of how it should be operationalized and the processes contributing to its development and maintenance is limited. The present study investigated if there was a relationship between the affective process Experiential Avoidance (EA), an unwillingness to tolerate negative internal experiences, and the frequency and severity of transdiagnostic compulsive behaviors. A large sample of adults (N = 469) completed online questionnaires measuring
