An overview of methods for interval-censored data with an emphasis on applications in dentistry.

Interval-censored time-to-event data occur in many medical areas, with dentistry or AIDS research being typical representatives. This article reviews methods for the analysis of such data, with an emphasis on the use of the accelerated failure time (AFT) model. A flexible AFT model (avoiding parametric assumptions on the distribution of the error term) is described in greater detail and is used to solve a typical dental question in a longitudinal oral health study.

Latent pattern mixture models for informative intermittent missing data in longitudinal studies.

A frequently encountered problem in longitudinal studies is data that are missing due to missed visits or dropouts. In the statistical literature, interest has primarily focused on monotone missing data (dropout) with much less work on intermittent missing data in which a subject may return after one or more missed visits. Intermittent missing data have broader applicability that can include the frequent situation in which subjects do not have common sets of visit times or they visit at nonprescheduled times. In this article, we propose a latent pattern mixture model (LPMM), where the mixture

A Rasch analysis of the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C.

The psychometric structure of the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C (SHSS:C) was tested in a Rasch analysis using data from 279 subjects. The Rasch model is the model of choice because it justifies the use of the sum of the item scores as a measure for the underlying construct. Rasch analysis revealed that use of a single sum score (number of suggestions passed) to express hypnotic ability is not sufficiently justified. However, the omission of the mosquito-hallucination and anosmia items (Items 3 and 9) rendered this short 10-item form of the SHSS:C sufficiently compatible with r

Segregation analysis of idiopathic talipes equinovarus in a Texan population.

"Idiopathic" talipes equinovarus (ITEV) is a nonsyndromal congenital anomaly of one or both feet. Casting and surgery are often necessary to obtain correct foot alignment. In spite of treatment, residual deformities of the feet occur and calf muscles may be hypoplastic. The cause of ITEV is unknown but genetic factors have been postulated. Complex segregation analysis was performed on 173 ITEV families including 93 Caucasian and 48 Hispanic families. The recessive mixed model was the best fitting model and no differences were found based on ethnicity. These results confirm previous studies sug

Time series analysis of syphilis surveillance data.

To manage a public health programme effectively it is necessary to set objectives and priorities according to the resources available. To utilize available resources optimally in a disease control programme we should both estimate the present and predict the future magnitude of the health problem. The CDC has an effective programme to control syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease. To keep track of control activities, CDC receives the number of syphilis cases from all states every three months. Primary and secondary syphilis cases declined from an all time high of 106,539 cases in 1947 to 63

Modeling continuous response variables using ordinal regression.

We study the application of a widely used ordinal regression model, the cumulative probability model (CPM), for continuous outcomes. Such models are attractive for the analysis of continuous response variables because they are invariant to any monotonic transformation of the outcome and because they directly model the cumulative distribution function from which summaries such as expectations and quantiles can easily be derived. Such models can also readily handle mixed type distributions. We describe the motivation, estimation, inference, model assumptions, and diagnostics. We demonstrate that

Advanced statistical approaches in tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment outcomes in Africa: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge in Africa; however, conventional statistical approaches often fail to capture diagnostic uncertainty, spatial heterogeneity, and complex disease dynamics, limiting evidence-based decision-making. This review synthesizes the application and performance of advanced statistical and computational methods for TB diagnosis and treatment outcomes in Africa. METHODS: Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed and Scopus for peer-reviewed studies (2010-2025) conducted in Africa that applied advanced meth

Psychological Processes, Not Physiological Parameters, Are Most Important Contributors to Symptom Severity in Patients With Refractory Heartburn/Regurgitation Symptoms.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Physiological and psychological factors have been found to influence esophageal symptom reporting. We aimed to evaluate which of these factors are associated with 3 reflux symptom severity outcomes (ie, Total Reflux, Heartburn, and Sleep Disturbance) through a traditional statistical and a complementary machine-learning approach. METHODS: Consecutive adult patients with refractory heartburn/regurgitation symptoms underwent standard 24-hour pH-impedance monitoring and completed questionnaires assessing past and current gastrointestinal and psychological health. In the tradit

Agreement between two methods for retrospective assessment of occupational exposure intensity to six chlorinated solvents: Data from The National Birth Defects Prevention Study.

The wide variety of jobs encountered in population-based studies makes retrospective exposure assessment challenging in occupational epidemiology. In this analysis, two methods for estimating exposure intensity to chlorinated solvents are compared: rated (assigned by an expert rater) and modeled (assigned using statistical models). Estimates of rated and modeled intensities were compared for jobs held by mothers participating in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study with possible exposure to six chlorinated solvents: carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, methylene chloride, perchloroethylene

Aorta in vivo parameter identification using an axial force constraint.

It was shown in a previous study by Stålhand et al. (2004) that both material and residual strain parameters for an artery can be identified noninvasively from an in vivo clinical pressure-diameter measurement. The only constraints placed on the model parameters in this previous study was a set of simple box constraints. More advanced constraints can also be utilized, however. These constraints restrict the model parameters implicitly by demanding the state of the artery to behave in a specified way. It has been observed in vitro that the axial force is nearly invariant to the pressure at the

An analytical model for the investigation of axial wall forces generated by an arterial stenosis.

The causes of arteriosclerosis are intensively investigated since many decades. While circumferential wall stress has received a lot of attention, axial stress (also called "longitudinal" stress) has been largely neglected, and practically never incriminated. However, it has been suggested in 2003 that moderate and severe arterial stenoses may induce non negligible axial forces cyclically in the vessel segment just proximal to the constriction cone. In the present contribution, we describe a simple analytical model that allows to study the distribution of these forces along the vessel in depen

Reflective, formative, hybrid, and composite measurement models in social science research: a diagnostic construct-measurement alignment framework.

Measurement-model specification remains a persistent source of conceptual and statistical error in social science research. Existing guidance distinguishes reflective, causal-indicator/formative, hybrid, higher-order, and composite models, yet applied studies often select among them through disciplinary convention, software defaults, or post hoc empirical performance. This conceptual article reframes the problem as construct-measurement alignment and develops an explanatory and diagnostic framework rather than another binary decision rule. A structured conceptual synthesis was used to compare

Statistical means to enhance the comparability of data within a pooled analysis of individual data in neurobehavioral toxicology.

Meta-analyses of individual participant data (IPD) provide important contributions to toxicological risk assessments. However, comparability of individual data cannot be taken for granted when information from different studies has to be summarized. By means of statistical standardization approaches the comparability of data might be increased. An analysis of individual data on the neurobehavioral impact of manganese (Mn) exemplifies challenges and effects of a multilevel statistical procedure. Confounding from individual-level and study-level covariates was shown by analyses of variance, but

A Model Based on Mixture of Weibull Distributions for Depending Competing Risks Data in the Presence of Long-Term Survivors, and Its Application to Malignant Melanoma Cancer Data.

The flexibility of finite mixture models makes them suitable candidates for analyzing survival data with complex, multimodal distributions. Such data is often available if the event of interest occurs due to multiple failure modes. Here, we explore the modeling of competing risks time-to-event data with covariates in the presence of long-term survivors in the population using finite mixture models. The mixture cure rate model is used to describe the uncertainty in the population, where the susceptible part of the population is modeled using a finite mixture of Weibull distributions with differ

Estimation of Underlying Normal Distribution Parameters From Dichotomized Data.

Accurately estimating the parameters of a continuous distribution from dichotomized or aggregated data is a common problem in biomedical and environmental research. Many studies report only the proportion of subjects exceeding a threshold, without releasing individual-level measurements. To address this limitation, we develop a hierarchical binomial-probit modeling framework to reconstruct the parameters of an underlying normal distribution from threshold-based data. The framework considers two principal settings. In the fixed-mean model, all studies are assumed to share a common mean and vari

Adaptive Sparsening and Smoothing of the Treatment Model for Longitudinal Causal Inference Using Outcome-Adaptive LASSO and Marginal Fused LASSO.

Causal variable selection in time-varying treatment settings is challenging due to evolving confounding effects. Existing methods mainly focus on time-fixed exposures and are not directly applicable to time-varying scenarios. We propose a novel two-step procedure for variable selection when modeling the treatment probability at each time point. We first introduce a novel approach to longitudinal confounder selection using a Longitudinal Outcome Adaptive LASSO (LOAL) that will data-adaptively select covariates with theoretical justification of variance reduction of the estimator of the causal e

Statistical methods for clustered competing risk data when the event types are only available in a training dataset.

We develop methods to analyze clustered competing risks data when the event types are only available in a training dataset and are missing in the main study. We propose to estimate the exposure effects through the cause-specific proportional hazards frailty model where random effects are introduced into the model to account for the within-cluster correlation. We propose a weighted penalized partial likelihood method where the weights represent the probabilities of the occurrence of events, and the weights can be obtained by fitting a classification model for the event types on the training dat

Variable selection with broken adaptive ridge regression for interval-censored competing risks data.

Competing risks data refer to situations in which the occurrence of one event precludes the occurrence of other events, resulting in multiple mutually exclusive events. This data type is commonly encountered in medical research and clinical trials, where it is used to explore the interplay among events and to inform decision-making in fields such as healthcare and epidemiology. We develop a penalized variable selection procedure to handle such complex data in an interval-censored setting. We consider a broad class of semiparametric transformation regression models, including popular models suc

Significance of supervision sampling in control of communicable respiratory disease simulated by a new model during different stages of the disease.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) interventions in interrupting transmission have paid heavy losses politically and economically. The Chinese government has replaced scaling up testing with monitoring focus groups and randomly supervising sampling, encouraging scientific research on the COVID-19 transmission curve to be confirmed by constructing epidemiological models, which include statistical models, computer simulations, mathematical illustrations of the pathogen and its effects, and several other methodologies. Although predicting and forecasting the propagation of COVID-19 are valua

Estimating cumulative incidence functions in competing risks data with dependent left-truncation.

Both delayed study entry (left-truncation) and competing risks are common phenomena in observational time-to-event studies. For example, in studies conducted by Teratology Information Services (TIS) on adverse drug reactions during pregnancy, the natural time scale is gestational age, but women enter the study after time origin and upon contact with the service. Competing risks are present, because an elective termination may be precluded by a spontaneous abortion. If left-truncation is entirely random, the Aalen-Johansen estimator is the canonical estimator of the cumulative incidence functio
