We reviewed blink reflexes recorded from 51 railroad workers with long-term occupational exposure to solvents who were diagnosed by others with solvent-induced toxic encephalopathy. No worker fulfilled conventional clinical criteria for dementia or trigeminal mononeuropathy. All workers had normal R1 and R2 blink reflex latencies. R1 latencies correlated significantly with several nerve conduction measures, including F wave latencies, suggesting that some intersubject variability reflected intrinsic conduction properties, not isolated brain-stem function. Although normal, the workers' R1 laten

Neurological and psychiatric syndromes, collectively referred to as NPSLE, occur frequently in SLE. The frequency of NPSLE varies from 21 to 95%; however, only 13-38% of neuropsychiatric (NP) events could be attributable to SLE in the NPSLE SLICC inception cohort. This variability in the frequency of NPSLE is attributable to the low specificity of the ACR case definitions for SLE-attributed NP syndromes, inclusion of minor NP events in the ACR nomenclature, difficulty in ascertainment of NP events and diverse experience of rheumatologists in the clinical assessment of NP events. Making the cor

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome (CuTS) is the compression of the ulnar nerve as it courses through the cubital tunnel near the elbow at the location colloquially referred to as the "funny bone". CuTS is the most commonly diagnosed mononeuropathy after carpal tunnel syndrome. Cubital tunnel syndrome can manifest as numbness, tingling, or pain in the ring/small fingers and dorsoulnar hand. Repetitive pressure, stretching, flexion, or trauma of the elbow joint are known causes of CuTS. Chronic ulnar nerve compression and CuTS, when left untreated, can lead to atrophy of the first dorsal interosseus muscl

The spinal accessory nerve (SAN) provides motor innervation to the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles. Injury to the distal segment of this nerve can result in trapezius denervation, leading to lateral scapular winging (LSW), shoulder pain, and impaired arm elevation. While iatrogenic SAN injury most commonly occurs during cervical lymph node biopsies and neck dissections, it may also arise following posterior fossa neurosurgical procedures due to prolonged traction, compression, or mechanical stress during surgical positioning or, less commonly, accidental direct ligation. Recognizing

Confirmation of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) diagnosis with sonographic measurement of the median nerve cross sectional area (MN-CSA) is increasing in popularity. We aimed to analyse the ultrasonography (USG) values of MN-CSA in pregnant women with and without CTS symptoms. MN-CSAs of third trimester pregnant women were measured with USG and they were asked about the presence of CTS symptoms. Symptomatic participants were assigned to the CTS group and remaining participants were assigned to the Control group. The groups were compared according to MN-CSA. Twenty-five participants were grouped i

Background: Neuralgic amyotrophy (NA) is an acute, monophasic, painful inflammatory dysimmune focal, or multifocal mononeuropathy. The lesion in NA is not always restricted to the brachial plexus but also involves individual nerves or branches. The prognosis of NA is less favorable than previously assumed, but the reasons for poor recovery remain unknown. Nerve constriction may be one of the causes of poor prognosis in NA. Case Presentation: Herein, we described a 54-year-old male with a history of type 2 diabetes in whom bilateral neuralgic amyotrophy developed with constriction of the poster

BACKGROUND: Suspected carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) remains the most common clinical scenario prompting referral for electrodiagnostic (EDx) studies to identify objective correlates of reported subjective symptoms and clinical examination findings. Despite much debate and a rapidly expanding literature, identification of an optimal algorithm for diagnosing focal median mononeuropathy at the wrist (FMMW) associated with CTS signs and symptoms remains elusive. The introduction and rapid dissemination of peripheral nerve ultrasound imaging (PN-USI) of the median nerve has raised new questions rega

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) continues to be neurophysiologically and clinically controversial. Earlier data concluding that the higher prevalence of persons with symptoms suggestive of CTS but without evidence of median mononeuropathy highlights the need for a better understanding of the underlying pathophysiology and natural history of CTS to provide a less empirical foundation for diagnosis and clinical management.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between the clinical manifestations of CTS with the outcome of the diagnostic tools (nerve conduction tests a

The aim of the study was to assess the utility of needle examination of the fourth dorsal interosseus pedis (FDIP) muscle in routine EMG. FDIP is an easily accessible muscle and may be less prone to blunt trauma as compared with the other foot muscles but despite its potential utility in electrophysiology, little if any data are available on the FDIP muscle. Detailed neurologic examination, nerve conduction, and needle EMG studies were performed in 118 individuals referred to the EMG laboratory of a tertiary referral center. The FDIP was studied by inserting a needle obliquely at an angle of a

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of non-tobacco nicotine dependence (NTND) related to vaping has raised concerns about its potential impact on rotator cuff disease especially given the pain after repair. This study aims to compare the risk of various surgical outcomes in patients with NTND, as compared to a control group without NTND.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX database examined patients with full-thickness rotator cuff tears treated arthroscopically from 2004 to 2021. A NTND patient cohort was compared to a non-NTND cohort. Patients were 1:1 propensity match

UNLABELLED: Background and Objective: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common mononeuropathy in humans. Despite the continuous improvement of diagnostic and treatment methods, difficulties remain in the evaluation and quantification of such symptoms as pain, paresthesias, hypesthesia, and hyperesthesia. Numerous tests and questionnaires have been developed for patients with upper limb disease, but the most specific for CTS and the most commonly used is the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ). BCTQ has been translated and validated for use in many languages, but there is no valid

Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) is an autosomal dominant inherited demyelinating neuropathy typically characterized by recurrent episodes of acute painless peripheral nerve palsies often preceded by minor trauma or compression at entrapment sites. However, less classical phenotypes have been reported. A 1.5 Mb deletion in chromosome 17 p11.2 has been shown to be the genetic basis of the disease in the majority of HNPP patients. The few families without this deletion harbored a mutation in the PMP22 gene. We performed a clinical, neurophysiological and molecular

Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is a multisystem disease that affects the skin and internal organs (i.e., gastrointestinal tract, lung, heart, kidney and peripheral nervous system). In the early phase, lung involvement is characterized by interstitial inflammatory alterations that are detected by bronchoalveolar lavage analysis and high resolution computed tomography (ground glass). As the disease progresses, fibrotic changes become evident and the diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) is impaired. Cardiac involvement in SSc can be manifested as myocardial disease, pericardial disease, conduc

The recombinant human IgG1 monoclonal antibody specific for human TNF-a adalimumab (Humira) has been recently introduced for the treatment of moderate/severe psoriasis. Neurological diseases have been rarely described as adverse events of anti-TNF agents. A case of acute respiratory failure due to diaphragmatic weakness following adalimumab therapy for psoriasis is described. A 65-year-old female patient presented with jaundice followed 2 days later by severe dyspnea and tachypnea which worsened when patient was lying flat, 1 week after the fourth dose of adalimumab.
