There are marked similarities in the psychiatric disorders associated with autoimmune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and syphilis (paresis). Although depression is most common, the psychiatric disorders in both conditions include the entire range of clinical syndromes that can simulate any type of mental disorder, functional or organic. The underlying neuropathology and methods of transmission are also similar. The author also notes that the social and moral attitudes toward patients with AIDS and syphilis are alike, including moral and religious prohibitions against the use of condoms.

The European patent system allows for the introduction of moral issues into decisions about the granting of patents. This feature has greatly impacted European debates about the patenting of biotechnology. This essay explores the European experience, in both the European Union and the European Patent Organization. It argues that there has been great confusion surrounding these issues primarily because the Europeans have not developed a general theory about when exclusion from patentability is the best social mechanism for dealing with morally offensive technologies.

Unavoidable and unique characteristics of the transplant surgeon's practice require difficult moral judgments. The two major areas of moral quandary are organ procurement and organ allocation. This paper outlines the key ethical issues in transplantation and draws attention to some of the recent literature that argues more specific issues in greater detail. The subjects discussed include brain death, living organ donation, procurement policies, organ sales, distributive justice, free riders (nondonators), duties and debts, and research.

Ethical decision-making research often focuses on singular events. However, in our daily lives we are regularly tempted to behave dishonestly, and little is known about whether and how repeated ethical deviations can worsen over time. Building upon research on dishonesty and moral disengagement, we test the effect of repeated transgressions on dishonesty. This study aims to characterise Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) members' perceptions on five main themes associated with ethics reviews, namely, the nature of research, ethical/moral issues, assent, participants' risk and HREC prerogatives issues.
