Modeling Culex tarsalis abundance on the northern Colorado front range using a landscape-level approach.

Remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) data can be used to identify larval mosquito habitats and predict species distribution and abundance across a landscape. An understanding of the landscape features that impact abundance and dispersal can then be applied operationally in mosquito control efforts to reduce the transmission of mosquito-borne pathogens. In an effort to better understand the effects of landscape heterogeneity on the abundance of the West Nile virus (WNV) vector Culex tarsalis, we determined associations between GIS-based environmental data at multiple spatial e…

Increasing Effectiveness of Genetically Modifying Mosquito Populations: Risk Assessment of Releasing Blood-Fed Females.

Releasing mosquito refractory to pathogens has been proposed as a means of controlling mosquito-borne diseases. A recent modeling study demonstrated that instead of the conventional male-only releases, adding blood-fed females to the release population could significantly increase the program's efficiency, hastening the decrease in disease transmission competence of the target mosquito population and reducing the duration and costs of the release program. However, releasing female mosquitoes presents a short-term risk of increased disease transmission. To quantify this risk, we constructed a R

Differential fitness effects of gut and reproductive tract bacteria in larval and adult stages of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

The development of axenic (microbiota-free) and gnotobiotic (fully defined and controlled microbiota) mosquito models has opened an opportunity to resolve current questions regarding mosquito-microbiota interactions, including fitness effects, microbiota acquisition, and tissue tropism. In this work, we introduced each of two focal bacterial strains - Enterobacter sp. and Asaia sp. originally isolated from Aedes aegypti midguts and reproductive tracts, respectively - into axenic Ae. aegypti larvae or adults to evaluate the effects of bacterial source and inoculation route on mosquito fitness.

Incidental mosquitocidal effect of an ivermectin mass drug administration on Anopheles farauti conducted for scabies control in the Solomon Islands.

BACKGROUND: The Solomon Islands is targeting elimination of malaria by 2030. The dominant vector is the predominantly exophagic, exophilic Anopheles farauti sensu strictu. This biting behaviour limits the efficacy of conventional vector control tools and highlights the need for new strategies. When administered to humans ivermectin has been shown to have a mosquitocidal effect. Mass drug administration (MDA) with ivermectin is an emerging strategy in the control of scabies. In this study we explored any incidental effect of ivermectin MDA conducted for scabies control on mosquitoes. METHODS:

Integrating routinely collected mosquito vector and human behavioral data for malaria prevention: A case example in central region Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Integrating human behavioral data with data on malaria vector biting rates can help to quantify human exposure to malaria vectors and identify gaps in protection; however, to date, the availability of necessary human location and behavior data have been more limited as compared to that of corresponding entomological data. To expand the data available for use in vector-human data integrations, this case example explored the process and interpretations of integrating human behavior estimates from the Malaria Behavior Survey (MBS), a large-scale cross-sectional survey measuring behavi

Sublethal effects of insecticides on the reproduction traits of insecticide-resistant Anopheles gambiae sensu lato mosquitoes from Tiassalé, Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Although exposure of Anopheles mosquitoes to insecticide-treated vector control tools is not always lethal, the sublethal effects of these insecticides on their life-history traits remain poorly explored. Therefore, this study examined the impact of sublethal exposure to broflanilide, chlorfenapyr and deltamethrin on longevity; blood meal acceptance; viable egg production; and the proportion of females with viable eggs in insecticide-resistant An. gambiae s.l. populations from Tiassalé, Côte d'Ivoire. METHODS: The sublethal effects of broflanilide, chlorfenapyr and deltamethrin we

Beyond Anopheles gambiae sensu lato: exploring the impact of non-dominant Anopheles species on malaria persistence in high-transmission endemic areas of Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread implementation of malaria control measures, including insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), indoor residual spraying (IRS), and seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC), malaria remains a major public health concern in Burkina Faso. The persistence of transmission is often attributed to increasing insecticide resistance in Anopheles gambiae sensu lato and drug resistance in Plasmodium spp. However, additional factors, such as climatic variability, ecological change, and shifts in vector species composition, may also play a role. This study investigated the geographic di

Effects of a bloodless diet on fitness and malaria susceptibility in Anopheles mosquitoes from Burkina Faso.

Emerging resistance in malaria vectors and parasites has accelerated the development of novel control strategies such as the Sterile Insect Technique and Wolbachia-based approaches, which require large-scale mosquito rearing. These methods traditionally rely on vertebrate Blood, raising ethical and logistical concerns. This study evaluated the effects of a BLOODless™ on wing size, longevity, and Plasmodium falciparum susceptibility in Anopheles coluzzii and An. gambiae from Burkina Faso, and the Kisumu An. gambiae strain. Blood and Bloodless-reared mosquitoes were compared across seven generat

Selection of the optimal long-acting injectable formulation of ivermectin for use in humans to target malaria vectors in Western Africa: evaluation of pharmacokinetics and mosquitocidal efficacy in cattle under laboratory conditions.

BACKGROUND: Ivermectin, a semisynthetic endectocide, is widely used against parasitic nematodes in humans and animals. Its lethality to Anopheles mosquitoes that have fed on treated hosts represents a promising malaria control strategy, particularly against outdoor transmission. However, standard oral formulations for use in humans produce short-lived mosquitocidal blood concentrations, limiting epidemiological impact. To meet WHO Preferred Product Characteristics (PPC) for endectocides against malaria vectors (hazard ratio [HR] > 4 for at least 1 month), we developed three long-acting injecta

Effects of chilling, fluorescent dust marking, and X-ray irradiation on the quality of male Anopheles arabiensis for sterile insect technique applications.

Malaria remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, with Anopheles arabiensis an important vector in several regions. Increasing insecticide resistance and flexible vector behavior limit the effectiveness of conventional control measures. The sterile insect technique (SIT) offers a complementary approach through the release of sterile males, with program success dependent on male quality. This study assessed the effects of chilling, fluorescent dust marking, and X-ray irradiation on the quality of laboratory-reared male An. arabiensis. Adult males were assigned to six treatm

Culex restuans (Diptera: Culicidae) in the upper Midwest: a review of ecology, biology, control, and contributions to human WNV in the region.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus endemic to the United States. Several regions, including parts of the Midwest, experience sustained WNV transmission with annual local and regional outbreaks. In the upper Midwest, Culex pipiens Linnaeus and Culex restuans Theobold, play key roles in WNV circulation, with Cx. pipiens considered the primary epidemic vector responsible for human cases and Cx. restuans linked to early-season enzootic amplification. These species share ecological niches, have similar host preferences, and are morphologically difficult to distinguish. Both are im

Susceptibility of the invasive malaria vector Anopheles stephensi in Ethiopia to novel chemical insecticides and insect growth regulator.

The presence of invasive Anopheles stephensi has been confirmed from field studies in several urban, peri-urban and rural areas of Ethiopia. Recent studies have shown that these mosquitoes are resistant to common public health insecticides, namely pyrethroids (deltamethrin, permethrin, and alpha-cypermethrin), Carbamates (bendiocarb and propoxur), and organophosphates (pirimiphos-methyl). This study aimed to assess the susceptibility of populations of An. stephensi from Ethiopia to novel chemical insecticides recently recommended for vector control, namely, broflanilide (a meta-diamide targeti

A Y chromosome-linked genome editor for efficient population suppression in the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae.

Genetic control - the deliberate introduction of genetic traits to control a pest or vector population - offers a powerful tool to augment conventional mosquito control tools that have been successful in reducing malaria burden but that are compromised by a range of operational challenges. Self-sustaining genetic control strategies have shown great potential in laboratory settings, but hesitancy due to their invasive and persistent nature may delay their implementation. Here, instead, we describe a self-limiting strategy, designed to have geographically and temporally restricted effect, based …

Managing insecticide resistance in malaria vectors in Africa: case studies from Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire and Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a significant public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where vector control strategies, particularly insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS), have played a critical role in reducing transmission. However, the emergence and spread of insecticide resistance among malaria vectors threatens to undermine these gains. In response, many countries in the region have developed national insecticide resistance management (IRM) plans. This study evaluates the adequacy and implementation of these plans in Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, and mainla

Cascades of effectiveness of next-generation insecticide-treated nets against malaria, from entomological trials to real-life conditions.

As insecticide resistance spreads in Africa, next-generation insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are increasingly being deployed to protect vulnerable populations against malaria. While these nets provide greater entomological efficacy against resistant mosquitoes, their effectiveness against malaria transmission also depends on other factors, such as durability, access, usage, and activity patterns of hosts and vectors. Here, we quantify the impact of two next-generation ITNs, namely Interceptor®G2 (chlorfenapyr-pyrethroid) and Olyset® Plus (piperonyl butoxide-pyrethroid), in a cascade from entom

An improved ovitrap-based surveillance framework: facilitating cost-efficient monitoring and efficacy assessment of integrated vector management strategies for dengue outbreak control.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever, transmitted primarily by Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus, remains one of the most pervasive mosquito-borne diseases worldwide. In China, the mosquito oviposition trap (MOT) - based Aedes monitoring system has become a cornerstone for dengue prevention and control. However, during outbreaks, this system faces operational challenges because of its labour-intensive nature and time requirements, limiting its efficiency for rapid vector control assessment. METHODS: Based on the oviposition behavior of Ae. albopictus, a novel Improved Ovitrap (IMT) was designed, featuring

Anopheles gambiae Re-Emergence and Resurgent Malaria Transmission in Eastern Rwanda, 2010-2020.

Rwanda achieved unprecedented malaria control gains from 2000 to 2010, but cases increased 20-fold between 2011 and 2017. Vector control challenges and environmental changes were noted as potential explanations, but no studies have investigated causes of the resurgence or identified which vector species drove transmission. We conducted a retrospective study in four sites in eastern Rwanda that conducted monthly entomological surveillance and outpatient malaria care. We compared sporozoite rates, human blood index (HBI), and relative abundance of the primary vectors, Anopheles gambiae and Anoph
