Glenohumeral rotational motion and strength and baseball pitching biomechanics.

CONTEXT: Addressing loss of shoulder range of motion and rotator cuff weakness in injury-prevention programs might be an effective strategy for preventing throwing arm injuries in baseball pitchers. However, the influence of these clinical measures on pitching biomechanics is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationships among clinical measures of shoulder rotational motion and strength and 3-dimensional pitching biomechanics and to evaluate the presence of coupling between the shoulder and the elbow during pitching to provide insight into the influence of clinical shoulder characteristic…

Are evolutionary hypotheses for motion sickness "just-so" stories?

Vertebrates have evolved rapidly conditionable nausea and vomiting reflexes mediated by gut and brainstem receptors, clearly as a defense against neurotoxin ingestion. In 1977 Treisman proposed that sensory orientation linkages to emetic centers evolved for the same reason, and that motion sickness was an accidental byproduct. It was an "adaptationist" explanation for motion sickness, since it assumed that evolution has shaped all phenotypic traits for survival advantage. Treisman's "poison" theory is plausible, and frequently cited as the accepted scientific explanation for motion sickness. H…

A novel soft biomimetic microrobot with two motion attitudes.

A variety of microrobots have commonly been used in the fields of biomedical engineering and underwater operations during the last few years … to complex underwater environments, we introduced a walking biomimetic microrobot with two kinds of motion attitudes: a lying state and a standing state. The microrobot uses eleven IPMC actuators to move and two shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators to change its motion attitude. In the lying state, the microrobot implements stick-insect-inspired walking/ro …

Migraine and motion sickness independently contribute to visual discomfort.

The objective of this study was to evaluate, in patients with migraine and healthy volunteers, with and without a history of motion sickness, the degree of discomfort elicited by drifting striped patterns. Eighteen healthy volunteers (HV) and 30 migraine patients participated in the study. Discomfort was greater in migraine patients than in HV, and in individuals with a history of motion sickness than in those without, but the effect of history of migraine was independent of history of motion sickness. Generalized Estimating Equations models for binary correlated data revealed that these diffe…

Glottal space segmentation from motion estimation and Gabor filtering.

Obtaining the glottal space segmentation is essential to characterize morphological disorders of vocal folds. In this study, the tested images are been acquired by direct optical inspection of the glottis using an endoscope and most of them are very poor quality. The application of motion estimation is very useful to segment the vocal folds endoscopic videos without user interaction. This approach involves three process steps: 1) Wiener motion estimator--to shift the measurement the next frame regarding to the current frame, and look for similarities between them. The best matching will accura…

Motion of the shoulder complex during multiplanar humeral elevation.

BACKGROUND: Many prior studies have evaluated shoulder motion, yet no three-dimensional analysis comparing the combined clavicular, scapular, and humeral motion during arm elevation has been done. We aimed to describe and compare dynamic three-dimensional motion of the shoulder complex during raising and lowering the arm across three distinct elevation planes (flexion, scapular plane abduction, and coronal plane abduction). METHODS: Twelve subjects without a shoulder abnormality were enrolled. Transcortical pin placement into the clavicle, scapula, and humerus allowed electromagnetic motion s…

3D cine displacement-encoded MRI of pulsatile brain motion.

Pulsatile brain motion is considered to be an important mechanical link between blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics. Like many severe brain diseases, different types of hydrocephalus are associated with impairment of these dynamics. In this work a cine displacement-encoded imaging method employing stimulated echoes (DENSE) and a three-dimensional (3D) segmented echo-planar imaging (EPI) readout for brain motion measurements in all three spatial directions is presented. Displacement-encoded data sets of 12 healthy volunteers were analyzed with respect to reproducibility, periodicity, a…

Interbody device endplate engagement effects on motion segment biomechanics.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Stand-alone nonbiologic interbody fusion devices for the lumbar spine have been used for interbody fusion since the early 1990s. However, most devices lack the stability found in clinically successful circumferential fusion constructs. Stability results from cage geometry and device/vertebral endplate interface integrity. To date, there has not been a published comparative biomechanical study specifically evaluating the effects of endplate engagement of interbody devices. PURPOSE: Lumbar motion segments implanted with three different interbody devices were tested biomechan…

Motion-induced positional biases in the flash-lag configuration.

When both stationary and moving objects are present in the visual field, localizing objects in space may become difficult, as shown by illusory phenomena such as the Fröhlich effect and the flash-lag effect. Despite the efforts to decipher how motion and position information are combined to form a coherent visual representation, a unitary picture is still lacking. In the flash-lag effect, a flash presented in alignment with a moving stimulus is perceived to lag behind it. We investigated whether this relative spatial localization (i.e., judging the position of the flash relative to that of the…

Coherent versus component motion perception in autism spectrum disorder.

Research on visual perception in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) tries to reveal the underlying mechanisms of aberrant local and global processing. Global motion perception is one way to study this aspect of ASD. We used plaid motion stimuli, which can be perceived as a coherently moving pattern, requiring feature integration, or as two transparent gratings sliding over each other. If global motion detection is impaired in ASD, this would lead to a decrease of the total time that a coherent pattern is perceived. However, in contrast to other studies in the literature, our results gave no eviden…

Perceived causality influences brain activity evoked by biological motion.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we investigated brain activity in an observer who watched the hand and arm motions of an individual when that individual was, or was not, the cause of the motion. Subjects viewed a realistic animated 3D character who sat at a table containing four pistons. On Intended Motion trials, the character raised his hand and arm upwards. On Unintended Motion trials, the piston under one of the character's hands pushed the hand and arm upward with the same motion. Finally, during Non-Biological Motion control trials, a piston pushed a coffee mug upward…

Vestibulo-ocular reflex and motion sickness in figure skaters.

In order to determine the effect of figure skating on the functional plasticity of the vestibular system, we quantified vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and motion sickness (MS) intensity in 11 female figure skaters and 11 matched control subjects. Vestibular stimulation consisted of three cycles of sinusoidal rotation (0.025 Hz, +/-60 degrees /s) and two velocity steps of 60 degrees /s (acceleration 60 degrees /s(2)). Nauseogenic stimulation consisted of a constant velocity (60 degrees /s) off vertical axis rotation (OVAR) using a 15 degrees tilt angle. Subjective sickness symptoms were rated im…

Three-dimensional scapulothoracic motion following treatment for breast cancer.

Varying levels of shoulder morbidity following treatment for breast cancer have been reported. Patients report pain, weakness, tightness and reduced functional capacity. Normal painfree motion of the arm and shoulder requires mobility in the scapulothoracic, glenohumeral, acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joints. Under healthy conditions elevation of the arm is accompanied by scapula retraction, lateral rotation and posterior tilt. However, when scapulothoracic motion is disproportionate to glenohumeral motion, the potential exists for microtrauma and long term pain. A number of studies o…

Motion sickness: advances in pathogenesis, prediction, prevention, and treatment.

Motion sickness has a major influence on modern traveling activities and the rapidly spreading engagement in virtual reality immersion. Recent evidence emphasizes the role of the otoliths in the pathogenesis of motion sickness, and several new theories may help explain its occurrence beyond the traditional sensory conflict theory. A promising new direction is the recently reported association of genetic polymorphism of the alpha2-adrenergic receptor with increased autonomic response to stress and motion sickness. Various physiological measures for the evaluation and prediction of motion sickne…

Movement of finger joints induced by synergistic wrist motion.

BACKGROUND: An experiment has recently been conducted to evaluate and compare the differences in tendon excursions between the flexor digitorum profundus and superficialis using three mobilization techniques. No previous studies deal with the total joint excursions with constant tendon length. The purpose of this study was to investigate the coordinated motion between the finger and wrist joints resulting from passive tension of the muscles while performing synergistic wrist motion. METHODS: The relative joint positions of the hand and wrist were measured using a three-dimensional motion anal…
