Atrial Natriuretic Peptide Alleviates Motion Sickness Potentially through Regulating Endolymph Volume in the Inner Ear Increased by Arginine Vasopressin.

INTRODUCTION: Dimenhydrinate and scopolamine are frequently used drugs, but they cause drowsiness and performance decrement. Therefore, it is crucial to find peripheral targets and develop new drugs without central side effects. This study aimed to investigate the anti-motion sickness action and inner ear-related mechanisms of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). METHODS: Endolymph volume in the inner ear was measured with magnetic resonance imaging and expression of AQP2 and p-AQP2 was detected with Western blot analysis and immunofluorescence method. RESULTS: Both rotational stimulus and intr…

Study on the relationship between muscle fatigue and motion sickness responses in different sitting postures under ship rocking conditions.

In a ship rocking environment, muscle activity in different sitting postures may impact passenger balance and stability, thereby aggravating or alleviating symptoms of motion sickness. This study aims to explore the relationship between motion sickness induced by ship rolling and muscle activity in various sitting postures, with the goal of informing the optimization of ship seat designs to enhance passenger comfort. The research focuses on the angle of backrest inclination and head-neck position as key variables. Participants were seated on a six-degree-of-freedom platform simulating ship mov…

Measuring the susceptibility to visually induced motion sickness and its relationship with vertigo, dizziness, migraine, syncope and personality traits.

The widespread use of visual technologies such as Virtual Reality increases the risk of visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). Previously, the 6-item short version of the Visually Induced Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (VIMSSQ short form) has been validated for predicting individual variation in VIMS. The aim of the current study was to investigate how the susceptibility to VIMS is correlated with other relevant factors in the general population. A total of 440 participants (201 M, 239F), mean age 33.6 (SD 14.8) years, completed an anonymous online survey of various questionnai…

Inner Ear Arginine Vasopressin-Vasopressin Receptor 2-Aquaporin 2 Signaling Pathway Is Involved in the Induction of Motion Sickness.

It has been identified that arginine vasopressin (AVP), vasopressin receptor 2(V2R), and the aquaporin 2 (AQP2) signaling pathway in the inner ear play important roles in hearing and balance functions through regulating the endolymph equilibrium; however, the contributions of this signaling pathway to the development of motion sickness are unclear. The present study was designed to investigate whether the activation of the AVP-V2R-AQP2 signaling pathway in the inner ear is involved in the induction of motion sickness and whether mozavaptan, a V2R antagonist, could reduce motion sickness. We fo…

Temporal change in NMDA receptor signaling and GABAA receptor expression in rat caudal vestibular nucleus during motion sickness habituation.

Repeated exposure to a provocative motion stimulus leads to motion sickness habituation indicative of the existence of central processes to counteract the disturbing properties of the imposed motion. In the present study, we attempt to investigate whether NMDA and GABA(A) receptors in rat caudal vestibular nucleus neurons are involved in motion sickness habituation induced by repeated Ferris-wheel like rotation in daily session (2h/d). We showed that defecation response increased and spontaneous locomotion decreased within 4 sessions (sickness phase). They recovered back to the control level a…

Pre-bout standing body sway differs between adult boxers who do and do not report post-bout motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is characterized by subjective symptoms that include dizziness and nausea. Studies have shown that subjective symptoms of motion sickness are preceded by differences in standing body sway between those who experience the symptoms and those who are not. Boxers often report dizziness and nausea immediately after bouts. We predicted that pre-bout standing body sway would differ between boxers who experienced post-bout motion sickness and those who did not. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We collected data on standing body sway before bouts. During measurement of body …

Vibrotactile stimulators and virtual 3-D audio countermeasures, training and motion sickness symptoms with a simulated graveyard spin illusion.

The vestibular system by itself is incapable of effectively compensating for the graveyard spin illusion. We examined two countermeasures, i.e., efficacy of vibrotactile stimulation around the waist and virtual 3-D audio presented independently and jointly for controlling a simulated graveyard spin. We also examined: a) additional training with these countermeasures to improve "intuitiveness;" b) included non-perturbation trials along with perturbation trials; and c) monitored changes in well-being as measured by a motion sickness scale from pre- to post-test and immediately following each tri…

Feeling queasy. EMS providers should be aware that many patients can experience motion sickness while riding in the ambulance.

Motion sickness can quickly become any patient's chief complaint. Rearward-facing transport, coupled with the stress and anxiety of injury or illness, can easily confuse the signals the body is sending to the CNS about equilibrium and balance. Any patient will appreciate your efforts to anticipate, prevent and minimize motion sickness.

Human otolith-ocular reflexes during off-vertical axis rotation: effect of frequency on tilt-translation ambiguity and motion sickness.

The purpose of this study was to examine how the modulation of tilt and translation otolith-ocular responses during constant velocity off-ve … SPV) otolith-ocular responses crossover. It is postulated that the previously demonstrated peak in motion sickness susceptibility during linear accelerations around 0.3 Hz is the result of frequency segregation of ambiguous otolith information being inadequate to distinguish between tilt and translation.

Is there a role for nonsedating antihistamines in motion sickness? Fallout from space research may soon benefit your patients.

The rotating chair test, a novel research technique for simulating motion sickness, is used to study the effect of nonsedating oral antihistamines in preventing or forestalling motion sickness. After receiving terfenadine, astemizole, doxepin, or placebo, four groups of male volunteers were rotated at accelerating speed, and they made head movements out of the axis of rotation until they perceived that vomiting would occur if additional head movements were made. Those pretreated with doxepin or terfenadine experienced a statistically significant prophylactic effect, as measured by increased to…

Increased urinary excretion of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) and decreased serum thyreotropic hormone (TSH) induced by motion sickness.

We exposed 35 male subjects to a rotary chair and motion sickness was provoked by Coriolis effect. This stress caused an increased excretion of urinary T3 and T4 and a decrease of TSH levels in serum. The increment in urinary excretion of thyroid hormones may serve as a very useful measure for the quantitation of physical stress. Although no statistically significant change of T3, T4, and TBG levels in serum could be observed by the employed techniques, the hypothesis is favoured that motion sickness probably causes an immeasurably small increase of the free thyroid hormone fraction in serum, …

Motion sickness and sense of presence in a virtual reality environment developed for manual wheelchair users, with three different approaches.

Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS) is a bothersome and sometimes unsafe experience, frequently experienced in Virtual Reality (VR) environments. In this study, the effect of up to four training sessions to decrease VIMS in the VR environment to a minimal level was tested and verified through explicit declarations of all 14 healthy participants that were recruited in this study. Additionally, the Motion Sickness Assessment Questionnaire (MSAQ) was used at the end of each training session to measure responses to different aspects of VIMS. Total, gastrointestinal, and central motion sickness…

Mismatch of Visual-Vestibular Information in Virtual Reality: Is Motion Sickness Part of the Brains Attempt to Reduce the Prediction Error?

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a relevant limiting factor in the use of virtual reality (VR) devices. Understanding the origin of this problem might help to develop strategies to circumvent this limitation. Previous studies have attributed VIMS to a mismatch between visual, and vestibular information, causing ambiguity of the position of the body in relation to its surrounding. Studies using EEG have shown a shift of the power spectrum to lower frequencies while VIMS is experienced. However, little is known about the relationship between the intensity of the VIMS and the changes in…

Vection is the main contributor to motion sickness induced by visual yaw rotation: Implications for conflict and eye movement theories.

This study investigated the role of vection (i.e., a visually induced sense of self-motion), optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), and inadvertent head movements in visually induced motion sickness (VIMS), evoked by yaw rotation of the visual surround. These three elements have all been proposed as contributing factors in VIMS, as they can be linked to different motion sickness theories. However, a full understanding of the role of each factor is still lacking because independent manipulation has proven difficult in the past. We adopted an integrative approach to the problem by obtaining measures of po…

Effects of hypergravity on histamine H1 receptor mRNA expression in hypothalamus and brainstem of rats: implications for development of motion sickness.

CONCLUSION: The study findings suggest that histamine was released from the axon terminals in the hypothalamus and brainstem and the released histamine activated post-synaptic H1 receptors there, resulting in the development of motion sickness. OBJECTIVES: We first examined which subtype of post-synaptic histaminergic receptor was responsible for the development of motion sickness. We then examined whether H1 receptors were up-regulated in various areas of the rat brain after 2 G hypergravity load, because the stimulation of H1 receptor was reported to up-regulate the level of H1 receptor pro…

Functional blockade of the parabrachial area by tetrodotoxin disrupts the acquisition of conditioned taste aversion induced by motion-sickness in rats.

The role of the parabrachial area in conditioned taste aversion (CTA) induced by motion-sickness was studied in male Wistar rats. In the first experiment, one-trial conditioned taste aversion, to a 0.5% decaffeinated coffee solution, was induced by 30 min of vertical rotatory motion (80 rev./min) in intact rats. In the second experiment, reversible blockade of the neural activity in various brainstem sites was induced by bilateral intracerebral injections of tetrodotoxin (TTX) (10 ng/microl) after conditioning. Blockade of the parabrachial area, but neither A8 nor lateral vestibular nucleus, d
