Increases in adipose tissue and muscle function are longitudinally associated with better quality of life in colorectal cancer survivors.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors need evidence-based guidelines pertaining to post-treatment body composition, which could benefit health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We aimed to describe the course of several body composition measures, and to assess longitudinal associations of these measures with HRQoL, fatigue and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). In a prospective cohort among stage I-III CRC survivors (n = 459), five repeated home visits from diagnosis up to 24 months post-treatment were executed. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and fat percentage were asse

Analysis of Biometric Sensor Data for Predicting Fatigue: A Framework Towards Reducing Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders in Aviation Manufacturing Workers.

Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) transpire when injuries to the musculoskeletal system (e.g. muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves) occur due to high fatigue inducing work-related activities, where repetitive movements and muscle strain are prevalent. However, it is challenging to quantify the risk of injury due to the assortment of tasks that factory workers may perform. Nevertheless, wearable sensors are a viable outlet that can unobtrusively capture biometric data in order to calculate objective measures, such as fatigue, which increases the risk of developing WMSDs. This pa

Effect of Footwear Longitudinal Bending Stiffness on Energy Cost, Biomechanics, and Fatigue during a Treadmill Half-Marathon.

INTRODUCTION: Carbon plates have been used to increase running shoes' longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS), but their effect during a long duration run remains unknown. Our study aimed to identify the effect of LBS on energy cost of running (Cr), biomechanics, and fatigue during a half-marathon. METHODS: Thirteen well-trained male runners (half-marathon time <1 h 40) performed two half-marathons at 95% of the running speed associated with their second ventilatory threshold on two separate visits, with either high-LBS (HLBS) shoes, with carbon plates) or standard-LBS (SLBS) shoes. Before and a

To what extent do the muscles and tendons influence metabolic cost and exercise tolerance in the hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders?

BACKGROUND: Individuals with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) often experience chronic pain, muscle fatigue, and exercise intolerance, potentially due to altered muscle-tendon mechanics. This study investigated the influence of Achilles tendon (AT) compliance and plantar flexor muscle function on the metabolic cost of walking in individuals with and without HSD/hEDS. METHODS: Eleven individuals with HSD/hEDS and 11 age- and sex-matched controls completed walking trials at, below, and above their preferred walking speed. Achilles tendon stiff…

Power-Based Running Durability in Trained Runners: Preliminary Evidence of Speed-Adjusted Mechanical Drift as a Marker of Fatigue.

This study examined wearable-derived running power and biomechanical variables as indicators of durability during prolonged dual-intensity exercise in trained trail runners. Twelve trained trail runners completed a 216-min treadmill protocol of three repeated 72-min blocks (60 min steady-state running at 85% of lactate threshold speed plus a 12-min uphill time trial [+12% incline]), plus an unfatigued control trial. A foot-mounted running power metre (Stryd Next Gen, Stryd Inc., CO, USA; firmware version 2.1.32.1.1) continuously recorded power output, duty factor, ground contact time, form pow

Effect of acute performance fatigue on tibial bone strain during basketball maneuvers.

The tibia is one of the most common sites for bone stress injury (BSI) in active individuals. BSIs are thought to occur in response to damage accumulation from repetitive loading below the tissue's yield limit. The effect of fatigue on musculoskeletal biomechanics and tibial bone strain during athletic movements remains unclear. In this study, participant-specific finite element (FE) and musculoskeletal models in 10 collegiate-basketball players were used to analyze the effect of acute performance fatigue on joint kinematics and torques, ground reaction forces (GRFs), and the magnitude and dis

The effect of fatigue on spike jump biomechanics in view of patellar tendon loading in volleyball.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Patellar tendinopathy (PT) is a highly prevalent overuse injury in volleyball and is often linked with overloading of the patellar tendon. Little is known, however, about whether and how patellar tendon loading is affected by fatigue during the most challenging jump activity in volleyball. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of a high-intensity, intermittent fatigue protocol on movement alterations in terms of patellar tendon loading during a volleyball spike jump. METHODS: Forty-three male volleyball players participated in this study. Three-dimensional fu

Quality of life in hypokalemic periodic paralysis - a survey.

Primary hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HypoPP) is a skeletal muscle channelopathy most commonly caused by pathogenic variants in the calcium channel gene, CACNA1S. HypoPP can present with attacks of paralysis and/or permanent muscle weakness. Previous studies have shown that patients with HypoPP can have impaired quality of life (QoL). In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to describe the QoL in patients with HypoPP caused by pathogenic variants in CACNA1S using The Individualized Neuromuscular Quality of Life (INQoL) questionnaire, a validated tool to measure the QoL of patients with neuro

Neuromotor control in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Neuromotor control of skeletal muscles, including respiratory muscles, is ultimately dependent on the structure and function of the motor units (motoneurons and the muscle fibers they innervate) comprising the muscle. In most muscles, considerable diversity of contractile and fatigue properties exists across motor units, allowing a range of motor behaviors. In diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), there may be disproportional primary (disease related) or secondary effects (related to treatment or other concomitant factors) on the size and contractility of specific musc

[Pharyngeal muscles and sleep obstructive apnea syndrome].

An analysis of the way the pharyngeal musculature modulates the caliber of the pharynx is important to better understand and treat obstructive sleep apnea syndromes. The caliber of the pharynx at the soft palate depends on the action of the tensor veli, the palatoglossus, the palatopharyngeus and the uvula muscles. At the ligual level, the action of the genioglossus and the geniohyoideus predominate. These different muscle groups contract in co-ordination before the diaphragm contracts. Their activity is diminished and disorganized during sleep. These muscles appears to have a histological com

Fatigue in motor neuron diseases.

Motor neuron diseases as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and post-polio syndrome are characterized by prominent muscular weakness and severe motor disability. The prevalence of fatigue in motor neuron diseases is remarkably high, and may contribute significantly to patients' disability and a poor quality of life. Despite its high prevalence, fatigue is an understudied clinical problem in motor neuron diseases and is often overlooked. The present review will attempt to explain the pathogenic mechanisms of muscle fatigue in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and post-polio syndrome, to cover the variou…

Stress fracture of the first rib from serratus anterior tension: an unusual mechanism of injury.

Fracture of the first rib usually results from high-impact, direct trauma. Stress fractures are less common and are associated with minimal morbidity. The case of a patient with a stress fracture resulting from the use of an exercise machine is reported. Previous reports have attributed stress and fatigue fractures of the first rib to the forces exerted by the scalene muscles. A new pathophysiologic mechanism involving the serratus anterior muscle is introduced and is supported by T2 relaxation times from magnetic resonance imaging. Stress and fatigue fractures of the first rib have minimal co

Mitochondria-targeted therapy with metformin and MitoQ reduces oxidative stress, improves mitochondrial function, and restores metabolic homeostasis in a murine model of Gulf War Illness.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a cluster of medically unexplained chronic symptoms, including neurological and gastrointestinal impairments, and muscle fatigue, suffered by veterans of the Persian Gulf War. A GWI model in C57BL/6 mice exposed to the nerve gas prophylactic pyridostigmine-bromide (PB) and the insecticide permethrin (PER) was used to test the effect of mitochondria-potentiating agents, metformin and MitoQ on chronic fatigue, observed in GWI. The exposure of mice to PB/PER resulted in enhanced oxidative stress, impaired mitochondrial function, and reduced autophagy. Treatment with the …
