Plasmodium falciparum malaria and Parvovirus B19; a case of acute co-infection.

BACKGROUND: Co-infection with Plasmodium falciparum malaria and Parvovirus B19 in adults is an extremely rare occurrence and, apparently, only one case has been previously reported. Herein we describe a case of acute co-infection with severe anemia and renal failure. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 34-year-old African man presenting myalgia, fatigue, headache, anemia and hepatosplenomegaly. A thin peripheral smear showed Plasmodium falciparum trophozoites and the patient was treated with oral mefloquine. After an initial amelioration, fever, fatigue and myalgia reappeared, the anemia wor…

Co-infection with human immunodeficiency virus-type 1 (HIV-1) and cytomegalovirus in two intravenous drug users.

A mononucleosis-like illness is frequently recognized retrospectively as the first manifestation of infection with human immunodeficiency virus-type 1 (HIV-1). This acute but transient retroviral syndrome may include symptoms such as malaise, fever, sweats, myalgia, arthralgia, maculopapular rash, diarrhea, and lymphocytic meningitis. We observed two intravenous drug users who developed a severe, febrile illness with subsequent oral thrush (one also had biopsy-proven esophageal candidiasis). Both patients had weight loss, arthralgia, myalgia, and fatigue. These symptoms occurred two weeks afte…

[Rheumatologic aspects of toxocariasis (visceral Larva migrans). Apropos of 2 cases].

Visceral Larva migrans is a human infection by the larvae of dog ascarids or, more rarely, ascarids of other animal species. It is endemic in France. Two cases which respectively manifested as acute oligoarthritis and inflammatory myalgia with increased muscle enzyme levels are reported. Manifestations of the minor forms of this infestation are reviewed.

Treatment of taxane acute pain syndrome (TAPS) in cancer patients receiving taxane-based chemotherapy-a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Taxane acute pain syndrome (TAPS) is characterized by myalgias and arthralgias starting 1-3 days and lasting 5-7 days after taxane-based chemotherapy. Despite negatively impacting patient's quality of life, little is known about the optimal TAPS management. A systematic review of treatment strategies for TAPS across all tumor sites was performed. METHODS: Embase, Ovid MEDLINE(R), and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from 1946 to October 2014 for trials reporting the effectiveness of different treatments of TAPS in cancer patients receiving taxane-ba…

Hypovitaminosis D, impaired bone turnover and low bone mass are common in patients with peripheral arterial disease.

Hypovitaminosis D is common in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Subsequent secondary hyperparathyroidism and osteomalacia contribute to bone pain and myalgias, and so aggravate clinical symptoms of claudication. We evaluated 95 out of 297 patients with angiographically confirmed PAD stages II (pain in the calves and/or thighs only during exercise) or IV (history of, or presence of local ulcers) and compared them with 44 matched healthy controls regarding their medical history, bone density measurements of the femoral neck and calcaneal bone ultrasound. Bone pain, myalgias and m…

Evaluation of neuromuscular symptoms in veterans of the Persian Gulf War.

OBJECTIVE: To comprehensively evaluate complaints of muscle fatigue, weakness, and myalgias in Persian Gulf veterans (PGV). BACKGROUND: Approximately 700,000 American troops were deployed to the Persian Gulf during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Upon return from the Gulf, some PGV developed unexplained illnesses, and special referral centers were established for the evaluation of these patients. Among the most common symptoms of these PGV are fatigue, weakness, and myalgias. An Institute of Medicine committee recommended further exploration into the possible etiologies of these complaints. …

[Atypical initial manifestation of primary hyperaldosteronism].

Approximately 10% of cases of arterial hypertension are due to a secondary cause, being among the most frequent primary hyperaldosteronism, characterized by hypertension, metabolic alkalosis and hypokalemia. However, on rare occasions it can present in an atypical way, in the form of muscle weakness and myalgia secondary to rhabdomyolysis due to severe hypokalemia, as in the case described.

Louse-borne relapsing fever in a refugee from Somalia arriving in Belgium.

We report a case of louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) in a refugee from Somalia who had arrived in Belgium a few days earlier. He complained of myalgia and secondarily presented fever. Blood smears revealed spirochetes later identified as Borrelia recurrentis. LBRF should be considered in countries hosting refugees, particularly those who transit through endemic regions.

Non-neuroinvasive West Nile virus infections during the outbreak in Greece.

A major outbreak of West Nile virus (WNV) infections took place in 2010 in Greece. Apart from the neuroinvasive cases, many additional cases without involvement of the nervous system were observed, characterized by high fever, myalgia, rash, leukopenia, and long-lasting recovery. West Nile non-neuroinvasive disease is a distinct clinical syndrome, and is not always mild.
