[Furuncular myiasis caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga: description of a case from Tanzania].

We report a case of a tourist, coming back from Tanzania, who presented with a foruncle on the left thigh diagnosed as a bacterial infection, which eventually turned out to be a myiasis foruncle. The patient said he had sat on the ground in short trousers. The lesion was covered with petroleum jelly and the larva was observed migrating from the lesion and subsequently extracted with forceps. The morphology of larval spiracles allowed to characterize the species as Cordylobia anthropophaga. Behaviour of the most common myiasis-producing flies, their life cycle and the way of infection are brief…

Facultative myiasis by Megaselia sp. (Diptera: Phoridae) in Texas: a case report.

Facultative myiasis caused by larval Megaselia sp. is reported in a human in Texas. On two occasions during 24 h, the youth experienced a "crawling sensation deep in [his] throat" which caused him to cough, expelling a living Megaselia sp. larva. The site of the infestation was presumed to be the sinuses or upper respiratory tract. The symptoms resolved upon expulsion of the larvae, and no additional complications were observed in the patient.

Cutaneous myiasis: a simple and effective technique for extraction of Dermatobia hominis larvae.

We describe two patients with cutaneous myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis. Three larvae were removed successfully by a simple technique that involved the injection of each larva with 2 mL of lidocaine, making surgical extraction by incision and exploration unnecessary.

Cutaneous myiasis. Recent advances in biology, immunology and improvements of the control measures.

The evolution of the main topics of study related to the biology, the life-cycle and the distribution of insects causing cutaneous myiasis during the last century is presented. These subjects are still of interest and a synopsis of new data concerning Hypoderma tarandi, H. diana and Prezhevalskiana silenus is reported as well as the changes of distribution of some species such as Cochliomyia hominivorax. In the second part, an over view of what has been archived on myiasis immunology is reviewed. This is based on the work conducted on Lucilia cuprina and Hypoderma. The areas of research are se…

[Cutaneous myiasis caused by the larvae of the fly Dermatobia hominis (author's transl)].

A case of cutaneous myiasis is reported, caused by larvae of the fly Dermatobia hominis, found in South and Central America where the disease was contracted during a journey. With the spread of air travel such parasites may be carried to Europe and elsewhere. There are also fly species in Central Europe whose larvae could potentially cause myiasis.
