Myocardial Infarction Secondary to Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor Obstruction of the Left Main: Treated With Primary PCI.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a rare tumor that can cause potentially fatal outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case where the tumor originated on the mitral valve and extended through the left ventricular outflow tract and aortic valve and into the left main artery obstructing it. Due to the hemodynamic instability of the patient, we proceeded for cardiac catheterization with the intention to aspirate the mass but were forced to do percutaneous intervention to stabilize the patient and bridge him to surgery. CONCLUSIONS: The patient underwent surgery sev

Cutaneous amelanotic signet-ring cell malignant melanoma with interspersed myofibroblastic differentiation in a young cat.

The diagnosis of malignant melanoma can be difficult because these tumors can be amelanotic and may contain diverse variants and divergent differentiations, of which the signet-ring cell subtype is very rare and has only been described in humans, dogs, cats, and a hamster. We describe herein histopathologic and immunohistochemical approaches taken to diagnose a case of signet-ring cell malignant melanoma with myofibroblastic differentiation in a cat. A tumor within the abdominal skin of a 2-year-old cat was composed of signet-ring cells and irregularly interwoven streams of spindle cells. Both

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase positive inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the urachus: A rare neoplasm in an unusual location.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are uncommon benign neoplasms in the abdomen, and urachal involvement is very rare. IMT of the urachus is usually mistaken clinically and radiologically for a malignant tumor. The tumor has spindle cell proliferation with a prominent inflammatory infiltrate and myxoid degeneration favoring other designations such as inflammatory pseudotumor and fibromyxoid pseudotumor. Complete excision is the treatment of choice. The case documented here was in a 50-year-old male, with an abdominal mass diagnosed on computed tomography scan as adenocarcinoma of urach

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the small intestine mimicking acute appendicitis: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a rare tumor of a borderline malignancy. Although it is commonly seen in children, the number of childhood cases in the current literature is limited. The lung is the most commonly affected location. However, cases that have been documented in the mesentery-omentum have mostly been located in the mesentery of the small bowel and not in the antimesenteric edge as in our patient. CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year-old Greek boy was referred to our hospital with acute abdominal pain mimicking appendicitis. Ultrasound and computed tomography revealed a s

Melena as presentation of primary small intestine inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in an adult woman. A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT), also known as inflammatory pseudotumor, plasma cell granuloma or inflammatory myofibroblastoma, is characterized histopathologically by myofibroblastic spindle cells with inflammatory cell infiltrates ( plasma cell, lymphocytes and eosinophils). Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is tipically seen in children or young adults and is most commonly localized in the lung, but it can occur anywhere in the body. CASE REPORT: We present a case in a young woman with severe acute G.I. bleeding, an uncommon presentation of IMT in adults. The patie

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of renal pelvis presenting with iterative hematuria and abdominal pain: A case report.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare type of mesenchymal tumor, which may affect various organs. The preferential site for IMT in the genitourinary system is the urinary bladder, while the presence of IMT in the kidney, and particularly in the renal pelvis, is rare. In the present report, the case of a 43-year-old man who was admitted to the Department of Urology of The Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University (Changsha, China) in July 2012, with complaints of iterative gross hematuria and abdominal pain unresponsive to antibiotics is described. Computed tomography and

Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor Presenting with Diabetes Insipidus in an Eight-Year-Old Boy: A Case Report.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMT) develop as a non-neoplastic proliferation of myofibroblasts in a myxoid to collagenous stroma admixed with inflammatory cells. The symptoms depend on the specific location of the tumor, which can be anywhere, but is particularly in the respiratory system. Thus, patients with IMT can present with a variety of findings. A pediatric patient with IMT who presented with cough, breathlessness, polyuria-polydipsia, and convulsions is described in this report.

FIZZ1-induced myofibroblast transdifferentiation from adipocytes and its potential role in dermal fibrosis and lipoatrophy.

Subcutaneous lipoatrophy characteristically accompanies dermal fibrosis with de novo emergence of myofibroblasts such as in systemic sclerosis or scleroderma. Recently dermal adipocytes were shown to have the capacity to differentiate to myofibroblasts in an animal model. Transforming growth factor β can induce this phenomenon in vitro; however its in vivo significance is unclear. Because found in inflammatory zone 1 (FIZZ1) is an inducer of myofibroblast differentiation but an inhibitor of adipocyte differentiation, we investigated its potential role in adipocyte transdifferentiation to myofi…

Cytopathologic features of epithelioid inflammatory myofibroblastic sarcoma with correlation of histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular cytogenetic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Epithelioid inflammatory myofibroblastic sarcoma (E-IMS) is a recently established rare variant of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. It is characterized by a distinctive constellation of clinical, pathological, and molecular features, including a nearly exclusive intraabdominal location, strong male predilection, aggressive clinical course, predominance of epithelioid tumor cells, and Ran-binding protein 2 (RANBP2)-anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) fusion in the majority of cases. To the authors' knowledge, the cytologic features of E-IMS have not been described to date. METHODS:

23-Year-Old Female with an Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumour of the Breast: A Case Report and a Review of the Literature.

Purpose: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours (IMT) are a subcategory of inflammatory pseudotumours (IPT). They arise most commonly in the abdominopelvic region, lung and retroperitoneum, but virtually any anatomical site may be involved. Predominantly children and adolescents are affected and there is a tendency for local recurrence. In the literature up to the present, 20 patients have been reported with an IPT/IMT of the breast. We would like to present another patient with this unusual tumour entity of the breast and discuss the literature. Patient and Examinations: A 23-year-old woman pre

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor with RANBP2 and ALK gene rearrangement: a report of two cases and literature review.

UNLABELLED: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are categorized as intermediate biologic neoplasms, whereas IMTs with genetic features of ran-binding protein 2 (RANBP2) and anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangement (IMT-RAs) are possibly related to a more aggressive clinical course. However, fewer than 10 cases of IMT-RA have been reported to date. Herein, we present 2 new cases of IMT-RA in which both tumors recurred quickly after primary surgery; one patient died 3 months later from the disease, and the other patient has been living with the disease for 12 months. IMT-RAs are cha

Cellular expression profile for interstitial cells of cajal in bladder - a cell often misidentified as myocyte or myofibroblast.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) have been identified in urinary bladder of several species, but their presence in mice remains uncertain. Meanwhile, dozens of reports indicate that dysregulation of connexin 43 plays an important role in bladder overactivity, but its localization has not been clearly defined, with reports of expression in either the smooth muscle or in myofibroblasts. We recently identified a population of ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 2 (NTPDase2) positive cells that resemble ICC and are distinct from smooth muscle, fibroblasts, myofibroblasts an…

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the maxillary sinus related with pulp necrosis of maxillary teeth: case report.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a benign lesion composed of myofibroblasts accompanied by varying numbers of inflammatory cells. Various pathogenetic factors have been proposed, but the etiology of most IMTs remains unknown. This article presents a case of IMT occurring in the left maxillary sinus. A 24-year-old man complained of throbbing pain in the maxillary left molars and swelling of the left cheek. His maxillary left second molar was diagnosed as pulp necrosis and root canal treatment performed. After that, his symptoms continued and he was referred to the Department of Otola…

Downregulation of the Wnt antagonist Dkk2 links the loss of Sept4 and myofibroblastic transformation of hepatic stellate cells.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Sept4, a subunit of the septin cytoskeleton specifically expressed in quiescent hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), is downregulated through transdifferentiation to fibrogenic and contractile myofibroblastic cells. Since Sept4(-/-)mice are prone to liver fibrosis, we aimed to identify the unknown molecular network underlying liver fibrosis by probing the association between loss of Sept4 and accelerated transdifferentiation of HSCs. METHODS: We compared the transcriptomes of Sept4(+/+) and Sept4(-/-) HSCs undergoing transdifferentiation by DNA microarray and quantitative reverse t

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the liver in an elderly woman following a second liver biopsy: a case report.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare benign lesion of unknown etiology reported in numerous anatomic sites. Hepatic IMT is rare. It is composed of a dominant spindle cell proliferation with a variable inflammatory component that has unique histological appearance. The tumor is more common in women, who often present with fever of unknown origin or other vague, nonspecific symptoms. A 74-year-old female presented with fever of unknown origin. Abdominal CT-Scan showed focal mass effect with luminal narrowing at the distal sigmoid colon, highly suggestive of a sigmoid neoplasm as we

Changes in E-NTPDase 3 expression and extracellular nucleotide hydrolysis during the myofibroblast/lipocyte differentiation.

Hepatic stellate cells (HSC) play a critical role in the development and maintenance of liver fibrosis. HSC are lipocytes that displayed the capacity to develop into myofibroblast-like cells. Ecto-nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolases (E-NTPDases) regulate the concentration of extracellular nucleotides, signaling molecules that play a role in the pathogenesis of hepatic fibrosis. In the present study, we identified and compared the expressions of E-NTPDase family members in two different phenotypes of the mouse hepatic stellate cell line (GRX) and evaluated the nucleotide hydrolysis by t

Wegener's granulomatosis of the temporal bone and skull base that mimicked an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: To compare two potential diagnoses of a temporal bone pseudotumour: an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour and Wegener's granulomatosis. METHODOLOGY: A case of Wegener's granulomatosis that mimicked an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour is reported. The clinical presentation, staging of the disease, histology, and follow-up are analysed. RESULTS: Histopathology of the temporal bone failed to provide an accurate diagnosis, even after immunocytochemical analyses. The diagnosis of Wegener's granulomatosis was suspected after biopsy of a pulmonary mass and was confirmed by the presen

Inflammatory myofibroblastic pseudotumour of the liver in association with gall stones - a rare case report and brief review.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic pseudotumours of the liver are rare tumour-like lesions that can mimic malignant liver neoplasms. The symptoms and radiological findings of this rare tumour can pose diagnostic difficulties. We describe a 69-year-old gentleman who was admitted to our department with symptoms suggestive of acute cholecystitis. Ultrasonography and computed tomography of the liver raised the possibility of metastatic liver disease. A core biopsy of the liver was performed to confirm the diagnosis of liver metastasis. Unexpectedly it showed no evidence of malignancy but instead reveale
